Hello, Pianists! I look forward to teaching you how to play Hanon technical exercise #2 with the wrist circles & rotation you just saw in my demonstration.
- Most piano students have heard that you should play with arm weight, but sometimes there’s some confusion about how and where to exactly incorporate those techniques into your playing.
- Stay tuned as I show you in slower motion how to play with arm weight by using wrist circles & rotation.
- I’ll also explain when to know to add these techniques to your favorite pieces.
Previously I have taught you how to play with wrist circles on Hanon #1 • Hanon No.1, Wrist Circ...
and forearm rotation on Hanon #5-6 • Forearm Rotation; Hano...
- Hanon #2 will helpfully combine wrist circles & rotation, so you can learn to incorporate these motions in your playing within repertoire pieces, such as Fur Elise.

Now it all makes sense. I had a lot of pain when I played the piano but with these circular movements I feel absolutely nothing. Bravo.

These are smashing studio presentations. Clear audio and well lit and angled visuals. Thank you, this makes learning more engaging.

Just been practicing Hanon 3 almost dislocating my thumbs in my efforts 😊 This looks a thumb-saver for technique.

I have never been able to do the forearm rotation with my Hanon exercises! But I have also never had anyone explain it to me like you are doing here. Thank you!

This really demonstrates what Matthay was advocating!!! Rotation away from the finger last used toward. the next finger you play. When the pattern begins with your thumb the rotation is toward the thumb followed by rotation TOWARD your second finger..... kind of tricky ... If you play an octave in tremolo SLOWLY you can get the idea.

Perfect. I have been working Hanon 2 for wrist circles, including very small circles on the 2 finger rotation. Your video shows you doing the same. Great explanation and camera angles. Wrist circles over longer passages are still a bit difficult. I try to shape the circles within small grouping of fingers as in multi octave scales. The overshaping circle is the hardest to cycle on the left hand ascending for me.

Excellent demonstration. However, isn’t one of the main objectives of Hanon to strengthen the fingers and develop their independence? Not a rhetorical question; really want to know. So is this to show how you can use Hanon to develop rotation, not necessarily to show how Hanon meant it to be played?

Hanon is a very versatile tool, we can use for different purposes beyond what it was originally intended for. Stay tuned, we are working on a new Hanon tutorial on how to make best of it for different purposes. - PTP Team

One of the hardest things to do is to let the muscles work naturally and together. You can think of hanon as a blank slate to add proper technique to and you can focus on specific techniques.

There are some cases when it seems that either forearm rotation OR wrist circles could be used - in short snippets of scales that ascend/descend but where the notes are close enough to one one another where you can move up and down with rotation alone. How do we choose which one to use?
@PianoTeachingPros
@PianoTeachingPros 2 года назад
Good question. Yes, in real repertoire we move in and out of a variety of choreography depending on which hand is playing and the direction of the notes. Check out my Beethoven Ecossaise technique video to be released this Thursday for guidance.

Thank you for the tutorial! I have a question about voicing techniques. I'm having trouble with playing silent notes on one hand, and loud on the other. How would you reccommend practicing that? :)

Thank for this wonderful lesson. I have a question regarding the ascending pattern of the right hand; I it still correct if we don't rotate between the 4th and 3rd fingers ? It looks like a small circle within a big circle. Thank you

Thank you for the compliment! There is no one fixed way of practicing Hanon and everyone is different, you should definitely feel free to explore different motions. Play small circle works fine, however, rotation emphasis more on forearm rotation, they are slightly different. When playing up to speed, rotation could be more efficient - PTP team.

Thank you. At what point in one's study is Hannon introduced? I am a retiree learning the piano but have only been exposed to techniques books. I am dissatisfied with my progress and wonder what has gone wrong.

I've come across a problem while doing these Hanon exercises particularly the ones involving forearm rotation where my pinky finger on both hands will lift up while playing, is this a problem? If so what can I do to stop it?
@pjbpiano
@pjbpiano Год назад
If your pinky is getting lifted whilst playing, it means your thumb is getting tense. A tense thumb area is reflected in the pinky.
@PianoTeachingPros
@PianoTeachingPros Год назад
It may or may not impact your play, but definitely suggests there is some tension. Try to exercise at a much slower tempo and completely relax your pinkie. Be patient, it may take some time. - PTP Team
