Fun fact: In some versions of the story, the witch and the stepmother were one and the same, or linked in some way, as the step mother dies as soon as the witch does.

Yeah, that's the version I like the best. It ties everything together nicely and explains why the stepmother will randomly disappear. It also would explain why the father was willing to go along with abandoning them because the witch placed him under a spell. Which would make his apparent sorrow at having to leave his kids, who he loves in the woods, and being overjoyed when they returned safely make more sense, the spell might be influencing his actions, but not his emotions.
@ArendAlphaEagle
@ArendAlphaEagle 3 года назад
I do NOT think that makes a lot of sense, actually. If the stepmother and the witch are the one and the same, why would she not enact Operation: Candy House Trap on the first go, when Hansel and Gretel drop pebbles? And how would she know _exactly_ where Hansel and Gretel would wander off to when the two got lost after their breadcrumbs get eaten, and place a candy house on their way?

It honestly kind of irritates me Britannica decided to have Hansel help Gretel help push the witch into the oven. One of the most interesting aspects of the original Grimm fairy tale was that Hansel was set up to be the main protagonist: He is Gretel's reassuring (probably older) brother who comes up with the initial plans which save them. But then he's suddenly taken out of the game by being caged. Gretel is the one who ultimately saves them both. She is the one who comes up with the plan to push the witch into the oven. Hansel had jack-shit to do with it.

The Woodcutter and Daddy "Gentleman" from Cinderella really needed some couples counseling. Also, one should read the Walt Kelly depiction of this in the Fairy Tale Parade comic. That last story didn't really utilize the nature of its characters very well. Pedro is established as agoraphobic and afraid of monsters to the extent that he can't open the front door...and then immediately opens the door. Despite being afraid of monsters, he's...Not afraid of the monster. He's also easily able to overpower the witch and push her out of her nest, and is able to outrun a bunch of flying monsters despite seemingly having spent his entire life either indoors or trapped in the monster's nest. I don't think Pedro ever had too much to worry about, considering how powerful he is.

What I love about fairy tales is how they reflect the realities of human lives over history, especially the difficult, scary, and taboo parts of it. Children being seen as another mouths to feed during famine, shown from that child's perspective, even the motif of an evil stepmother wanting to get rid of previous wife's offspring - I'm not saying it happened commonly, I'm saying it could be relatable to the listeners as a very dark scenario of a familiar situation. Definitely same with a stupid husband who refuses to listen to reason, and the wife living in growing suspense until she has to take care of herself and her children on her own... Like, you can see how that's a human emotion. Love that about storytelling in general.

2:10 "Because step parents are always evil." You know, I know it depends on the step parent, but sadly enough my wife grew up with a step mother who literally told her not to call her mother and treated her as if she wasn't even a part of the family. She even told her younger half-brother that they were not even siblings and to not call her sister. He's grown up now and knows better of course, but I felt that was pretty cruel, especially since she would often take advantage of her too. My wife never got to grow up with a proper mother, and her father hasn't treated them all that great either. (I mean, he thinks I'm a scrub, for one, even though my parents treat her way better.)

In a similar story I heard, the brother character has an animal with him (a horse in the version I know, but I guess a cow or a camel works too), that he tries to flee on, but before he has the chance, the monster sister eats one of its limbs off, asking him each time how many limbs it has on her return. "4? Oh that's weird, bc I'm just back from the stable and only saw 3" So he knows that he can't escape anymore and has to stay with the monster, while she slowly eats the animal, asking him how many limbs it has each time. So he has to wait, realizing she will eat him just as slowly and painfully once he is done. So my guess is that both the hero cow and the weird ending from Phelous' story originally went similar to this, but got the details mixed up somewhere along the way. Either that or Britannica decided to cut out the gruesome parts of the hero cow subplot. (And speaking of weird endings in the version I know the brother eventually turns into the moon w the sister eating him bit by bit each month and his wife then slowly bringing him back to life. So that's... some way to explain moon phases I guess)

DANG, that stepmother looks and sounds like a MAN cartoon character I can't remember at the moment! I actually PREFER the versions of the stories where the biological moms are evil, especially Snow White...Hansel and Gretel's being the witch is even better, though, because how many wandering kids has she trapped and eaten with nobody ever catching her anyway?! Every time I see any version of Hansel and Gretel makes me launch into the Whose Line Is It Anyway Daytime Talk Show game where Colin is the witch, Ryan is the guy who built the candy house, and Wayne is the several people in the audience:) "Look! LOOK! All I wanted was a nice edible house in case I had GUESTS over! I didn't expect chunky little German children to come up and start nibbling! Do I go to a house made of wood and start CHEWING on the side?! NO! Because I KNOW better!"

I kinda like how in _The Woodcutter's Wealthy Sister_ a _cow_ tries to save the family. In most stories, the heroic animal is a dog or a horse, but _never a cow._ Usually in media, cows are portrayed as being lazy, stupid gluttons who seem to _only exist_ because media dictates that _all_ rural life must have cattle around. Maybe it's a cultural difference that cows are held in high regard in Syria like how they are in Hindu culture.

I wouldn't say they're Dingo level, these guys seem to at least have a basic understanding of solid drawing and animation even if it does still look quite unpleasant, tho the weird lineart that gets randomly thicker in weird places making the shapes look more messy is a pretty dingo thing to do.
