Tangled Up is really Britannica's Tales Around the World Rapunzel but in 2012 a company called Brightspark Productions slapped a Disney rip off cover on it. So we also have the Rapunzel like stories of Fenchelchen and when King Solomon put his daughter in a tower.

At least to me, the message of all these stories seem to be: “Don’t lock your daughter away from the men of the world or else she’ll fall for the first dude who breaks into her room.”

@AnInsideJoke
@AnInsideJoke 5 лет назад
I was being facetious about part of it, yeah, but there's still the fact that the ruse was born out of the assumption that the 2nd woman wouldn't also care about the baby. What if she had also volunteered to give the baby up rather than see them killed? It's still the life of a child at stake, after all. Not to mention there were a ton of other ways to solve it (such as asking 3rd parties who knew one of the two women, for instance) before moving right to threatened baby murder.

I actually really like the Rapunzel segment in this. The stylized character designs & the goofy tone make me think of the Fractured Fairy Tale cartoons if they had a better animation budget, especially the part about the Prince wandering around with his hat stuck on his head. Holy crap, what's up with the parents in the first Rapunzel story?? In that one, the mother didn't even want the vegetables because of pregnancy cravings-- the baby was already born and they were gonna have a feast to celebrate. Why on earth would they give up the baby in exchange for the vegetables then?? And the witch was too "old and decrepit" to fly, but apparently climbing hair like a rope isn't strenuous at all in comparison

Can't believe that the eagles would go out of their way to warn King Solomon about his daughter marrying some scrub, but STILL won't just give the Fellowship a ride to Mt. Doom.
@cthonisprincess4011
@cthonisprincess4011 4 года назад
Gwendolyn Stata I know this is a joke but... The eagles weren’t allowed to fly the fellowship to Mount Orodruin- they work for Manwë, King of the Valar, and the Valar were forbidden by Eru (Ëa’s creator god) to interfere with Arda’s fate. Whenever the eagles were involved, it was Manwë subtly breaking the rules to help out. Moreover it's literally stated and implied multiple times by Gandalf and others that discretion of the Ring's location is of utmost importance. Putting its holder on an eagle is basically lighting a beacon saying "Yo Sauron, here it is! Come get it!" Aside from that fact, there are PLENTY of reasons why it was safer to walk to Mordor rather than fly in with the eagles. People bringing up the "buh da eagles" argument to try and look smart, either didn't read the book or didn't pay attention to the crux of the entire story.

Really makes you appreciate the effort Disney puts into updating, simplifying, and improving their own versions. So many of these other studios hew too closely to the old tales which might be fine reading a book but really don't work as a movie.

The "Familiar tales around the world" tape cover looks like something issued to schools. I guess this was one of those "Teacher's hungover, let's put a video on to keep the little shits quiet" kind of teaching aid. Gotta say though, the animation in a lot of these does make me nostalgic. I've no idea if I ever watched any of these as a kid, but I guess it's a combination of the animation style and the VHS quality visuals.

The Fenchelchen story reminds me: When I was a kid we had a picture book version of Rapunzel (I think it was one of the Little Golden Books series) which mentioned the witch teaching her magic, but it was only mentioned in one page/illustration and never really affected the plot. As a kid I always thought the potential there was wasted.

I actually liked Fenchelchen the most; there's real potential about someone caught between love and independence and their genuine love for their parent, and how eventually there's a divide when the parents can't handle "losing" their child. You could tell a story about a family that genuinely love each other but must make the decision for themselves.

I'm sure this is gonna come across as an ACKCHYUALLY, but I may as well throw it out there: Maltese history time! that "iron cross" Fenchelchen was wearing is probably supposed to be the Cross of Saint John, it's a very similar design (here it is as a unicode character ✠) and is strongly associated with Malta. Saint John's cross is the insignia of the Knights Hospitalier, a knightly order dating to the days of the crusades which ruled Malta from 1530 to 1798, and is still in operation in Malta to this day. As a result the cross has become something of a symbol of Malta as a whole, to the point where it's often also known as the Maltese Cross. Design wise the iron and Maltese crosses are almost identical, with the primary difference being the Maltese design is supposed to have its posts split at the ends, giving the appearance of 8 points, while the iron cross stays solid, giving it 4 very broad points, additionally the Maltese cross is seen in a variety of colors, primarily white and red (interestingly enough the symbol of the Umbrella Corporation in both Resident Evil and real life is two Maltese crosses, one white and one red, overlaid on top of each other at 45 degree offset angles), while an iron cross is always black (with the exception of a couple not-legally-iron-crosses made by the German army starting in 2008 which are gold). Both the Maltese and iron crosses are part of a category of cross symbols known as the crosses pattée, which were used by various knightly orders and royal families of the middle ages, including the Knights Templar. NOTE: I'm not actually Maltese and don't know much of anything else about Maltese history, I just know odd details about specific permutations of crosses.

The video (especially the Fenchelchen segment) has made me go off on a mental tangent where the story is that a witch takes the baby in exchange for vegetables or whatever, but the witch is actually a good person who wants to take care of a child and knows that whoever would sell their baby would be a shit parent anyway.
