Haven't you _read_ into Tin Woodsman's backstory? He was always the most brutal one of Dorothy's friends! Original name Nick Chopper, the guy used to be a flesh-and-blood human. he's the way he is now because the Wicked Witch of the East cursed his axe to keep hacking away at him piece by piece. so he had to have himself refitted with metal for every bodypart lost in order to stay alive. _(in short, People in the land of Oz don't die as easily as you or I- they can survive a full-body prosthesis and still be themselves. Hell, Tin Man's severed human head still exists as its own character, who doesn't self-identify as_ the _original Nick Chopper!)_ *_Edit:_*_ omitted an unnecessary "the"_

The thing with Glinda is probably the worst change the original movie made. In the book, she wasn't involved in any of Dorothy's journey until the flying monkeys took her there. She didn't just neglect to tell her important info, she just was minding her own business in her own kingdom. She was helpful in the book, and the movie made her look like she was kind of screwing with Dorothy.
@TheNotverysocial
@TheNotverysocial 3 года назад
Sent on this whole mission to learn a lesson she learned in the first fifteen minutes. Few people mention this for such a landmark movie. Which is strange when you realise the credits refer to the book in a rosy nostalgic manner, yet the movie's fame overshadows it anyway. I always thought the book was better. It was kind of written more like a series than a three act story, and the 1980s anime (which can be seen here on YT) handles the tale much better, recognition or not. Oz exists, unlike something like *Through Looking Glass* and the other major characters show far more evidence of having what they think they lack than that film, the Scarecrow being the only one done right, Lion being done the worst. When watching it often, it gets harder not to see those shortcomings, doubly when you have working knowledge of the novel.

@TheNotverysocial
@TheNotverysocial 2 года назад
@@TheRealJames76 The single most annoying thing about book Dorothy is her unexplained desire to go back to Kansas and calling it home without the least bit of critical thought to it. It really gets repetitive and obnoxious, and what is worse is when directly asked about it, she doesn't say because that is where Aunt Em is, but because that is where (Dorothy) supposedly lives. Whenever she mentions her Aunt and Uncle, I feel she deserves praise, but those moments are few and far between. Besides, when you know where the story is going to ultimately end up, Kansas did not matter, and all this fuss over it was for nothing. Had her guardians been in the house at the time, she would not be so discontent, but this does not dawn on her in the 1900 book. The movie fixes this particular mishap and makes quite clear she is worried about her Aunt Em, and that is established early on. Nothing is great about Kansas itself.

OH! The lion not actually being a coward was actually a huge thing in the original book, he was a badass that fought off all kinds of threats, but thought he was a coward because he felt fear (which is totally sensible, never feeling any kind of fear isn't a sign of bravery, it's a sign of stupidity.) The scarecrow was also pretty clever, thinking of ways to get them out of trouble, and the tin man was really compassionate, the moral of the story was they already had the things they wanted they just didn't know it, including Dorothy, though in her case it felt like she was being dicked around...

I feel like a lot of the elements of the '39 film are so iconic that people have kinda forgotten why they worked in that film in the first place. Like, the Wizard's whole speech in which he gives Dorothy's friends tokens like a diploma and whatnot worked because of the comedic implications of someone who's brainless suddenly being declared smart because he has a diploma, someone cowardly being declared brave just because he has medals, etc. I love the '39 film, but I'm pretty sick of Wizard of Oz adaptations that just try to borrow as much from it as they can without incurring legal trouble.

I also remember the Scarecrow getting some kind of thing with pins sticking out of his head because he was sharp-minded or something and, in later books, when he would cushion Dorthy or someone else's fall they had to be careful of the pins.
