Great tips, James! I've been nurturing my happy plant as of late and this vid came in good timing. I have been trying to find out the cause of the leaves yellowing and browning all the time and watching your vid, it is possible that it's due to excessive temperature. This Winter the whole family have had to wfh and I'm guilty of turning the AC on often and I believe the heat circulates well around the location of my happy plant. I'll be sure to do something about that. Love your vids, James! Keep making them :)

Hi Linda - thanks so much for commenting and happy (pun-intended) to hear that it came at great timing! The situation you described is definitely the same in my household during this winter - I turn on the heater, then open the door - resulting in constant temperature fluctations. Spring is coming and we'll get some more comfortable temperatures for ourselves and our plants and your happy plant should bounce back pretty quickly in no time! Really appreciate the support :)

I was gifted a dying one by my sister three years ago. I put well draining soil in because it had root rot but later pretty much gave it up and stuffed it into my UNHEATED sun room for a year because it looked like shit... and it survived a winter and suddenly it thrived. It grew new leaves and started to bloom and the perfume overtook the whole sunroom. I have never seen such a resilient plant. I took her back inside to my other indoor plants and she will always have a special spot in my heart. Came back from the death and blessed me with the most amazing bloom. Right now it's starting to bloom again, two years later!!! I can't wait for the lovely smell.

@Simple Plantation It seems to flower after being distressed a bit, when repotted or their environment changed. At least this is what I've heard and experienced. I changed her spot and put up a new grow light over her a month ago and immediately after it started a flower stalk! I know they are very irregular bloomers so I was very surprised too. I put 3 dracaena in a 12 inch terracata pot and they are thriving. I went to re-pot them, after nearly a year, into a larger pot, but upon importing them I saw they were perfectly happy just where they were. They're growing large in a smaller pot, and aren't even close to being rootbound. I think in a smaller pot they put most of their energy above the soil, into the plant growth rather than root growth. Also, they have always been in a fairly dark corner.of my house and they are totally content. I also found that browning tips are usually due to underwatering, or like you said, too much sunlight. Even window light is too much. Anyway, love your vids handsome. Very good. Xo -D

I've just rescued one of these from the garbage room of my apartment block, looks like it hasn't been watered since Covid started and it's a very UN happy plant. I stripped off all the sick and dead leaves so the trunk is now very bare, but I'm thinking about cutting it back and using that bare stem with the growth at the top to start a new plant. Fingers crossed!

It's a strange plant for sure. I bought this at least three years ago. Never fertilized, never repotted, water it maybe once a month. I've legitimately double checked if it was a fake plant. I've never seen it change, never droops, never drops a leaf, also never grows, looks identical to the day I got it. Every few months I might notice a brown leaf at the base on the inside of the plant.

@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 9 месяцев назад
Hey there! 5 years is a long while! Have you been periodically changing the soil over the years to give it a refresh? Hi, I have a small one but the leaves are droopy and has turned yellow. The others are yellow with brown tips. The base of the leaves (where it connects to the trunk) are all brown. The trunk's skin is like detaching from itself too and feels hollow. It's currently sitting beside a window but doesn't get direct sunlight. I live in an apartment and keep the temp at around 25°. I don't know what to do. I don't want it to die. T.T

@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty Год назад
Hi Flik - my dracaena is mostly in low light as it is the one plant out of my collection that can tolerate it. Since you mentioned some sort of growth, it ideally sounds ok and what you’re doing sounds to be the right thing / you can rotate the other side towards the light source in attempt to distribute the love around and see how it goes. How did it get worse? Maybe you can give it some time ☺️
@Flikkey
@Flikkey Год назад
It’s quite tall n skinny, 170cm, 2 heads with long leaves. Now that winter has turned the leaves are hanging low, still green so they are not happy looking like yours anymore. I’ve tried cutting some leaves to balance it out but it just likes leaning on one side. Giving it time will be 2 years or more. It’s a slow grower compared to my last apartment, about 4-6 leaves a year.

@simpleplanty

Hey Connie! Thanks for reaching out - I think we could diagnose what's causing the brown tips in the first place - is it getting too much light or not enough light? Too much water or not enough? @simpleplanty
@simpleplanty Год назад
☺ thanks for watching! You've come to the right place - it does sound like your soil could retain a little bit too much moisture (if you're mentioning that it is always damp). I usually add a bit of other things into my mix such as perlite/charcoal so that it creates spaces for the roots to breathe, which also prevents it from overwatering. Regarding tap water, to be honest, I think it's completely fine - I think I made the mistake of spoiling my plants with filtered water, then switched to tap and I did notice that they caused a bit of drama; after time, they just got used to it. Do it for the convenience! Hope that helps.

@simpleplanty Год назад
Just thinking that in general, plants start looking a bit 'leggier' due to lack of light; since you've just adopted one, perhaps check your environment and lighting conditions, and if it's getting enough light, new growth won't have to stretch out and find the sun, hence giving you a bushier look ☀️ Hope that helps! (I sometimes just purchase another plant and pot two in the same pot to make it appear bushier too 🙊)

What? Easy? Help? I have a huge collection of house plants including indoor and outdoor bonsai some are easy and others not. So why? Why? Does this plant evade my care. I have been doing this for ages, have killed many at the beginning then decided to get serious about hobby and actually learn. A lot of my collection are grown from propergated cuttings and a lot grew from babies. I'm totally confident to separate plants, root prune etc. BUT - I bought my beautiful happy plant at proper nursery and realised that I haven't put in the research effort because it was just so healthy. I made a mistake, taking it out one warm night in the rain. It's good for them. Mostly. Windy, he had an accident and fell and I've been so busy. Just taken out of pot separated one trunk and left two. The temperature is fine as suggested, there's absolutely no root rot, but I've got brown tips and sadly brown new leaves. Is he in shock? I usually use water boiled overnight. But haven't misted. One is healthy, one ? The other I need expert advice! I want to grow more off the trunk and save 🙏 them.
