Hard Rock Versus High Explosives

Doing a large site cut on a hillside is no problem when you have a large excavator and a bulldozer... until you hit some massive very hard Granite boulders. Thankfully the earth moving contractor new who to call, the call came in Friday, I was out there and solved the problem Monday.
Another example of the successful and safe use of high explosives to quickly and effectively solve a difficult rock problem.
Parts of this video were shot in 2.7K resolution other parts are upscaled 1080P.

Watching the non-el tubes burn in their delayed pattern is a really neat effect, as is catching the delays from the caps down the holes... you can see the logic underlying the breakage, such that one mass is moved to give the next someplace to expand into. Also, it makes for better video when flyrock is allowable - and easier on the excavator operators when it comes time to muck out after the blast. A rather nice day's work.

@chemech
@chemech 4 года назад
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast I'll have to watch that part again... Frame rate vs. when an event occurs is always a bit of a challenge when you try to do dynamic analyses... everything from the classic old Hollywood Western movies where the spokes in the coach wheels appear to turn backwards to missing a discreet event. That said, our modern digital cameras can do quite a lot that used to require a super expensive high speed camera - which means that us average budget folks on budgets can get some really cool effects. OK, time to turn off my inner engineering professor and just enjoy the show!

More to come MLP, there were 4 cameras used during the blast sequence, The ever faithful Sony Handicam that does the real time video and excellent sound,. the DJI Osmo (Gopro similar) - 240fps slomo and time lapse and helmet cam, DJI Mavicpro drone @50fps for half speed explosions and my old phone at the firing point (sound is not too good on this as the mic is full of dirt I think). I use the sound from the Sony Handicam and stretch it for the slow Osmo and drone shots, It's a fair bit of mucking around when you are working with 3 different resolutions and 4 different frame rates.. but I'm getting the hang of it.

And I like the intro piece - it sets the scene for what we're about to see. BTW, you didn't get "lost" - you were "temporarily geographically indeterminate"!

@demolitiondavedrillandblast
@demolitiondavedrillandblast 4 года назад
I quite often have to drill holes to anchor myself when there is nothing else to tie onto or use an already drilled hole with a longer drill sticking out of it to steady myself etc. The longest drill steel of this type that I have is 5.2m, only had to use this a few times with a hand drill, holes that long are best drilled with a drill rig but some times you just cant get a machine in. The larger of my two drill rigs uses extension rods that are threaded both ends - you just keep adding rods.

Dave, I had a wonderfully brilliant idea that may be a bit stupid and you might want to try. Have you ever seen those baby reveal videos where they pop a balloon and colored powder goes everywhere? Okay, so you get some of that powder in different colors and stuff it in the holes with the packing material you use. Try to draw something with it and see if the drone view could/can pick it up when it blows. For instance, don't tell the other people there with you that you filled a hole with some blue powder, when it goes off and there is blue smoke hanging in the air- if someone asks about it, just tell them "Must have been a smurf hiding in that one; it happens" or something to that effect. I don't really know what the ramifications of adding said powder into the holes might do for the charge, hence why I asked/told you about it. Have fun with it if you can, thanks for the videos.

Excellent work!! The Blasting work was pretty good too... Lol You are getting good at this video production thing! I wish the pros were half as good for the TV shows... lol Thank you for the shot of the awesome hand crank blasting machine. That's nearly as cool to watch as the explosion itself lol And it's smart using the crank as a key, and to disconnect the wires. Nice safety feature. We would love a look at it, maybe with its history and specs. Just keep it away from Big Clive unless you want to see the innards lol Is your siren just mounted in the ammo can with a battery? Handy setup. I assume that for these open shots you need to get a lot further away, so you use a long cable, and then have an electric cap near the charges to initiate the Non-el system? Watching the shot progress like that is just awesome. Oh, and I have sympathy for you running the drill horizontal lol A few years ago I was using an 80 pound (36 kg, largest common size) jackhammer on a vertical rock face while preparing the footings for a 120 foot (37 m) monopole antenna tower (old gas station sign towers stacked and welded), which I have climbed a few times since to install, adjust and replace antennas and feedline. It was fun at the top, if you put the top of your head against the pole, (about 6 inches, 152 mm, in diameter at the top) and rocked a little (or that time when the wind was blowing... Lol... Sheesh), you could see the wave traveling down the tower, reflecting off the base, and coming back up to you, just like when you shake a tight rope. Visual SWR, with a very high impedance mismatch at the bottom, and me at the other end! It was on top of a ridge above the Napa Valley, and the view was worth it!

Few... .that is a long post! - The hand crank exploder is called a "Beethoven Blasting Machine" They are an old time and long time industry favourite, from the days when quarries and mines all used electric dets - this machine will conservatively fire 150 dets in series! That is quite a belt of electricity. I use old ammunition boxes for all kinds of things because they are strong, cheap and watertight. This shot had 200m of cable out - usually aim for 10x safety margin. Yes the nonel is started with a single electric cap. Nothing quite like using a jack hammer horizontal to put hairs on your chest! I own a 30m tower that is rock solid and I climb it with apprehension. Take care over there.

Several reasons, firstly so you can get a good look at your rock and choose the best spots to drill, secondly so that you don't slip off! Third, a rock drill is good at drilling rock but quickly clogs when trying to drill dirt.
