This game is where it really shines. In the original Philosopher's Stone game he didn't have the budget for an actual orchestra so had to use synthesised instruments. But with this CoS onwards he did and the results are incredible.

One thing the PS1 version does better than all the others is telling the actual story. The PS2/GC/Xbox versions gloss over parts of the story too much for my liking but the PS1 version details nearly every key event of the movie and some that weren’t even in it (the ghoul in the Weasely’s attic was only in the PS1 game, none of the other games and not even the movie had it).

I think it allowed free roam to the extent the PS1 hardware would allow. And at any point in the game you could go to Colin Creevy's photo album which let you revisit any previous level to get cards and beans you forgot

From first hand experience, I found that the Xbox version runs the best of all 4 with a solid 60fps, in top of adding additional effects the GameCube version left out. The PS2 version looks the best in my opinion, but it runs at 30fps with choppiness. Not to mention the PS2 version is loud... The game is on a CD instead of a DVD, so I can't play it for long without worrying the PS2 or the disc itself will fry up after an hour of play. Gameplay-wise, the GameCube and Xbox versions are identical, with the only differences being a few effects, slight lighting differences, and load times. The PS2 version is a bit like an expansion of what the GC and Xbox versions did, letting you run around Hogwarts on foot, adding prefects on the grounds and in the halls for added stealth elements, and the game handles flying differently, among other things. Again, I think the PS2 version is the best with that. The PS1 version is a carbon copy of Sorcerer's Stone on PS1. I don't even think it needs to be compared to the PS2, GC, or Xbox versions, but I still enjoy it. It's everything I liked about the first game but made bigger, with a few more convenient changes. Overall, I grew up with the GC and PS1 versions, but I prefer the PS2 version.

I originally played gamecube version but i prefer the ps2 one by far, GC and Xbox have better graphics and effects in general but ps2 have better colors and a better camera system, ps2 version have lot more content (u can save from pause menu, hogwart exterior, more minigames/sidequest, ability to stun prefects...) the ps2 version is harder and basilik fight is more realist (music dont stop and sword have better effects), all this can look like details but it really make a diffrence in the gameplay and for me gameplay is by far more important than graphics, also one thing i hate in xbox/gc version is that when u get hit by an ennemy u will always loose beans and its really annoying with that crappy camera that dont follow u correctly (only the gnomes should be able to make you drop beans along with ghost since u cant kill them in hp2) The only thing i would change in ps2 version is framerate Im happy that EA decided to follow ps2 style for hp1 and hp3 games on 6th gen consoles

So I bought the XBOX conversion after watching this comparison, being a longtime fan of the PS2 original. Needless to say I am having a blast! I love the move to baked lighting from the colored lighting of the PS2 version. I love the new visual effects, many of which are only on XBOX. I love the buttery smooth locked 60 frames-per-second framerate which has only experienced a single dip in over 5 hours of play. I love the razor sharp graphics outing at 480p. I love the super fast load times. But there is one thing that bothers me: they removed free-roaming Hogwarts Grounds! In the PS2 original, you could explore nearly all of Hogwarts, both inside & outside. In the XBOX and GC versions however they stripped out the ability to free-roam the outside, replacing it with fast travel waypoints to hotspots. This is one of my personal favorites elements of the game and absolutely helps immerse me in the world. It is surely missed. This should be the defacto definitive version of the 6th gen versions of CoS, and in most ways it is, but I don't know man... I miss absolute freedom like the PS2 original granted.

I'd have to say the PS2 version is the best. It feels like they cut out some areas and secrets in the the Xbox and gamecube versions despite the better graphics and that nice 60fps on GameCube. Also the camera also feels very wonky on the Xbox and gamecube versions as well while the PS2 camera follows you with out problems.

I played the GameCube version first and I enjoyed it. I love how you could refill your beans by flying through hoops around the castle grounds. Although I thought it kinda sucked that you couldn’t land anywhere besides right outside the front entrance. Then I played the PS2 version and noticed that even though it’s basically the same game, they looked like they put the most effort into this version. It felt like it was harder than the other versions. You can roam the castle grounds instead of going as far as right outside the great hall entrance and choosing which path you wanna take eliminating free roam as seen in the GameCube/Xbox versions. I also thought the graphics were better in the PS2 version. Night time was more dark and scary and more threatening of losing house points with more prefects roaming the castle and the grounds. Also more ghosts roaming the castle and grounds. I noticed a few more sound effects not found in the GameCube/Xbox versions and also some scenes that weren’t in the GameCube/Xbox versions and some different camera angles in the PS2 version. Although, while playing the PS2 version, I noticed you can’t fly through rings outside collecting beans like you can in the GameCube/Xbox versions. That was kind of a bummer. Although you can land anywhere you want and not just in front of the main entrance in the PS2 version. As I took flight in the PS2 version, I was waiting for Harry to say “what’s that over there” referring to the rings. He never said that so I flew around looking for the rings and there was none. I played the Xbox version long after playing the PS2 version and realized it was about 99% the same as the GameCube version. A little later after that, I played the PS1 version and even though I was enjoying playing it, I was spoiled on the PS2 version and if I didn’t play the PS2 or even the GameCube/Xbox versions before I played the PS1 version, I probably would of had more fun with it. One thing I’ll give the GameCube version over the PS2 and Xbox versions, there was a secret entrence to the gringotts bank only accessible through a certain portrait if you connected the Gameboy Advance to the GameCube. That kinda sucked that I couldn’t get that exclusive to the GameCube room in the PS2 and Xbox versions. The portrait is still there in the PS2 and Xbox version but instead of a secret room hidden inside the portrait, there is a chest with a wizard card in that room...at least that chest is there in the PS2 version, I can’t remember for sure if it’s in the Xbox version. There is however the confiscated artifacts room only found on the PS2 version. Bottom line, for me, even though I played it a few years after playing the GameCube version, the PS2 version is my favorite.

If I'm being honest, I always preferred the PlayStation 2 version. Yeah the graphics in the GameCube and Xbox versions look better and load times are shortened, but these versions feel stripped down to me. The stealth is watered down and too easy (with some stealth segments being removed entirely), saving is limited to scrolls you find, some bosses are changed, and also it doesn't have that glitch where Percy can enter Fred and George's shop.

Some of the changes between the versions are bizarre and seem a lot of effort for a movie tie in (which I love and have played to bits on the PS2) Like changing the location of the Spellotape, which actually makes less sense plot wise as she dropped them in the fireplaces when using the floo powder. And adding in save points to the XBOX version when it was just done from the menu on PS2. They seemed to change navigating the grounds and Nerfed the prefects after the PS2 version as well.

GC/xbox/ps2, just to much of a graphic war. Didnt aim for perfect gameplay. I feel a little lika AVGN now, But I mean, the bean collecting is bullshit, the lookaround is backstabbing in areas when you need to be able to sneak and it's just too fucking big of a game, if you don't pay attention 100% you will get lost in minutes. Yes, it runs at 30fps, yes the loading screens are horrible, yes it lacks lighting, but the shading and colors of the locations look sharper than the diluted and blander look of the GC/Xbox version. DIFFERENCES between GameCube and PS2 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: GC: Cutscene Magical Measurer PS2: No cutscene GC: When you're ready, we'll meet you in the barn. PS2: You know, Harry, you can cast Flipendo on a whole bunch of things lying around the Burrow-and if you do, you might be surprised at what you find. GC: They're heading for the garden. We'll meet you out in the barnyard. GC: And watch out when the washing machine opens its door. GC: We'll meet you in the garden when you're ready, Harry. GC: Be my guest. And remember, Flipendo the gnome, pick it up, spin them round, and chuck it over the low wall. I bet you can't throw a gnome as far as Fred did. Or, hit any of the targets in the field over there. PS2: Nice one, Fred. That went miles! (shortened) GC: I think you deserve a Chocolate Frog. GC: Gate closed PS2: Gate open PS2: Harry talks wizard card/beans/spell books/sickle PS2: This doesn't look like Diagon Alley. PS2: Uh oh. Imps. I'd better watch out. GC: How much is this book? PS2: Thanks very much. PS2: Harry wonders where Ginny's lost items are. PS2: Fred and George at Gambol and Japes. GC: Instruction on perfect Flipendo spell PS2: Guy tells you how to cast it GC: Chocolate Frog reward PS2: Wizard card reward GC: Potter's got a girlfriend! PS2: Potter, you got yourself a girlfriend! GC: You Know, Ron, I'm not really sure about this. We've gotta get to school, haven't we? And even underage wizards are allowed to use magic if it's a real emergency. Section 19 or something of the Restriction thingy... You're sure you can fly it okay? What's it look like-I'm doing all right, aren't I? Yeah, I suppose, so far. GC: Why don't you try that door, Harry? GC: Hogwarts Grounds paths cut short PS2: Grounds paths extend GC: Nearly Headless Nick meets on stairs PS2: Nick meets at the bottom GC: I'll meet you inside, Harry. PS2: I'll meet you in the common room later. GC: Lost & Found wizard card PS2: Student rewards you GC: Nick meets on the stairs PS2: Nick meets at the Entrance Hall GC: House points PS2: Dumbledore determines the points GC: (Neville grunts) What did he say? Hurry up! PS2: Prefects guarding 7th floor/Entrance Hall/Grounds GC: Cutscene of the voice (Harry wonders what it is) PS2: No cutscene GC: Nick meets at the stairs PS2: The chamber of secrets has been opened, enemies of the Heir beware. GC: Narrator speaks before Dumbledore PS2: Narrator speaks at right time PS2: Wizard card reward GC: I suppose the Expelliarmus spellbook is down those stairs. PS2: Cross the line, and you lose a point. GC: Draco faints after his spell PS2: Draco still stands GC: Snake slithers away PS2: Snake vanishes PS2: Students talk about Harry being a Parsel-mouth GC: Listen up, you lot. We're going to make sure we win the Quidditch Cup this year, and the way we're going to do that is practice, practice, practice. First, a quick recap of what we learned last year. I'll start with the seeker. Over here, Potter. Now, watch carefully. That's good, Harry. Flying through each ring makes you go faster and increases the magical charge in your broom. When you're going faster, you'll see that the magical charge in your broom is increased too. You can see this by the trail of your broom is leaving in the air behind you. The magical charge in your broom is at maximum! You can now get that extra boost of speed. That's a Bludger, Harry! Don't let it hit you, or it will reduce the magical charge in your broom. Thye hurt too! OK, you know the score-one opposing Seekers, two Bludgers, and two opposing Beaters to contend with. All you have to do is catch the Snitch. Excellent, Harry! You receive an A+. And because of that excellent performance, Harry, here's a brand-new Nimbus 2000 to take with you. You'll be able to fly it anywhere around the Grounds but try not to crash into too many of the towers. If you want to try to improve you Quidditch Practice grade, come back and see me anytime of the day. PS2: Ah, Potter. Ready to continue our winning streak from last year? I'm certain we're good enough, but we're definitely going to have to practice a lot harder. No time like the present, so let's have a run-through of the basics. When you fly through a ring, it adds to your broom's magical charge and increases its speed. Likewise, missing a ring decreases the charge. Great going, Potter. Your broom's halfway charged. Keep it up! Your broom's now fully charged and you can boost. You can tell when you're ready to boost by the trail of sparks coming from your broom. These are Bludgers-nasty pieces of work, as you'll remember from last year. You don't want to get hit by a Bludger if you can avoid it. Looks like you've improved on last year, Potter. With this line up, Gryffindor are a dead cert for the Quidditch Cup again. That'll really get up Snape's nose. As Hufflepuff are in training as well, they've agreed to take part in a practice game with us. You'll have to compete against their Seeker now, but I'm sure that'll no problem for you, Potter. Incredible flying, Potter! Even Madam Hooch would have to give you a good grade. Don't let Professor McGonagall find out, but here, take this broom and get in as much practice as you can. GC: ...and just past the entrance to the library. Past the library, portrait. PS2: ...and into the library reading room. Sneak through there, and you'll see a door with a golden arch. Go through this door and into the Reading Room Annex. At the end of the Annex... Reading room, through door with golden arch and into Annex, through portrait. (Different scene) GC: Hermione said that I have to go past the library to find the portrait to the Restricted Section. Right, somewhere around here is a portrait. Aha! The portrait! How on earth do I get out of here? PS2: Draco cutscene PS2: Draco talks to Crabbe and Goyle during duel GC: Only battle (Crabbe) PS2: Battle both Crabbe and Goyle GC: Student cutscene PS2: No cutscene GC: Oliver Wood meets you for Quidditch PS2: Ron lets you know GC: Stay with Harry PS2: Inside Tom Riddle's diary GC: No cutscene PS2: Cutscene- I must've slept in. Oh no! The Quidditch match!

The other games look nicer and run at a higher fps, but they cut out a lot of exploring outside of Hogwarts, which was something I loved. gone is the ability to fly around Hogwarts on your broomstick. I'll stick with the ps2 in this instance, though I wish it was at least higher fps.

Played this soooooooo much back in the day, along with 1 and 2 on the PS1 and the three RPGs on GBC/GBA, which are underappreciated. I had the Gamecube version of this first, but at some point I got the PS2 version as well and was very surprised to see that you could fly anywhere basically. It's still strange that they didn't have that for the Xbox and GC versions. Or maybe I'm misremembering.

Super interesting! I've always been curious about the history/development of these games. Recently bought a bunch of them for Xbox to play at some point but I had no idea it was so different than PS2. Turns out the ports were handled by slightly different development teams that were sharing tools. It almost seems like a remake (Xbox/NGC) in terms of object and camera positions. + different texture/lighting engines (actually what version did come first? I've seen speculation both ways). I played PS2 back when, but was fortunate enough to be playing games through HDD Loader. Honestly I don't even remember loading times being an issue. The add on was pretty good for eliminating load time for many PS2 games. That 40 second load was a shock to the system. XD Also, PS1 harry potter games seem to be running the Croc 2 engine? At least that's what I would identify it as. There's a few giveaways in the style and design. Okay, being Argonaut basically confirms it. Cool! haha Would love to know if PS2/Xbox/NGC versions of Philosophers Stone have a similar situation. I would slightly doubt it as this one actually came after Chamber of Secrets on these consoles but there would surely be some of the usual differences that are fairly typical for each system.

PS2 had significantly longer loading because the quality of the game was much higher. With more content comes longer load times and the XBox and Gamecube had less to load and thus were faster. It depends on preference at the end of the day whether you want quicker loading or better quality. On PS2 Cut-scene's see more care as well. At 2:02 we see a nice shot from inside the washing machine on the PS2 but the x-box tries to mimic the shot with a distortion effect and the gamecube can't even manage that much. Also I should mention how the free flight mode on PS2 allowed for the player to land anywhere , as opposed to designated spots on the latter consoles. PS1 was never going to stand next to the new consoles in any form but its interesting to see the improvements made.

I agree, the PS2 Version was full of Contents, that annoying teleport in the gamecube version ruined the game for me, I don't know why they cut so many stuff. i like more the classic puzzle plattform and feel of the PS1 version. Also, this looks very impressive for 1994 hardware (shit, this game was released in 2002 believe it or not!). But if i had to choose any 6th gen version, i will take the XBOX version because is the best of them followed by Gamecube and lastly PS2. XBOX and Gamecube are obviously two or three steps ahead of anything on PS2 graphics. PS2 is much or less a Dreamcast 1.5 or 2.0 (i know that has 2 times more power than DC, but both are pretty equal, also both had its advantages and disadvantages).

Xbox and Gamecube are the same version. They're identical, except that Xbox delivered it a little bit better (check the glass effect at 2:03) PS2 was ported from it, and many changes were made, as the addition of cloacks to the Weasleys, different cinematics and addition of secrets and stuff. PS2 version has better textures, lightning and graphics overall, but runs at half fps (30 vs 60) and has those fucking horrible loading times. To sum up, I'd love to play the PS2 version again, with the loading times of XBOX HDD and its cinematicc, its 60 fps and why not, the Weasleys without the cloack!
