A walk along Hartington Road in Toxteth Liverpool. Why do some of our streets look scruffy these days. Was it better back in time or are they better now.
The bottom end was always the posh end with lovely flowered gardens and the Smithdown Rd end was being turned ino flats in the mid to late 60's when the south end came under the hammer then it became scruffy, even Arundal Ave turned into flats right down to the Cemertry turnstiles and it became a mess. I think you know why Holmes st is scruffy, it does have a bad reputation now. Hartington Rd also used to be the route of Billy Smarts Circus from Picton Rd Sidings to sefton Parks big field. Do you remember the stone masons on the corner before it became a tyre place. The wheelie Bins don't help in keeping the place tidy. I am glad in some way that I made the move when I did, My family has never had to experience any of these areas and I never mention it although i do have relatives living in that area that I talk to by phone, I grew up between there and Picton Rd, I knew every little detail of the area, all my school mates lived in all those little streets and thats where I lived my youth. I even had my favourite back entrys for short cuts. I must Admit I could never live their ever again, it's become a disgrace, It's not only citys its happening in. I recently visited Edinburgh and never saw one empty shop and it was spotless, Same in Dundee and Aberdeen, I wonder why not?
Hi Jeff, Hartington Road l used to hang around in my very early years and not been around here for years, but funny enough, it looks the same as l remember l can't understand why it's untidy especially by the park.👍
We lived in Thorneycroft Road off Smithdown Road then moved to Holly Bank Road off Greenbank Road in the '60's, my park was Greenbank. As you know I left Liverpool in '77. I still look back with rose tinted glasses remembering the place as pristine but it wasn't, a lot of the big houses a round where empty and some sadly demolished now, and I guess most are flats now but back then they where still mainly family houses. Back then it was graffiti that was spoiling virtually every wall, now it appears it's litter, such a shame.
At 8mins 05 secs you can see the flat complex just beyond St Bed's Church, its called Lynton Court, flats 1 to 6, 78 Hartington Road yet the entrance is on Fern Grove. I lived there from 2007 to 2020, the complex was run down, so I contacted Riverside Housing (over the years) and got the place in good condition ... I moved out as the poor man living next to me had mental health problems and constantly attacked me, So I left ... Before that I lived in Moss Grove at stones throw away ... I missed walking down leafy Arundel Avenue on my way to Smithdown Road.
Hi Jeff, Ever thought about doing a video on Liverpool areas that have been used as movie/t.v locations? There's one on your video, saint bedes(?)used in utopia. There's also a lot of Peaky Blinders/sherlock holmes locatations around Falkner square and by the old Institute.Liverpool is used quite a lot because it resembles London and they cannot get the permits so come here(the best place)instead.
On the subject of litter, Liverpool has always been bad. Bill Bryson remarked on it... Citizens had taken time off from their busy activities to add crisp packets, empty cigarette boxes, and carrier bags to the otherwise bland and neglected landscape. They fluttered gaily in the bushes and brought colour and texture to pavements and gutters. And to think that elsewhere we stick these objects in rubbish bags. I have seen over decades that in more deprived towns in the Welsh Valleys there is No noticeable litter. No visible vandalism. No graffiti. On road verges in between there is loads though. I guess it's don't sh1t in your own chips.
The stolen photo used for the Lpool Quiz 1 thumbnail had lots of litter in it. I cropped it so it isn't visible. That was back in the 60's. We'll never get to the reason why people litter, I think they just expect someone else to pick it up for them.
