Harvesting Peaches Before It's Too Late!
Nothing beats the taste, flavor and juiciness of home-grown peaches!
That being said, knowing when to harvest them can be tricky... if you wait too long, the birds and squirrels will get to them. If you pick them too early, they won't be as plump, sweet and juicy as you'd want!
The exact time to pick peaches is determined by the cultivar, but generally they are harvested from late June through August. Color is a great indicator of maturity. Peaches are ripe when the ground color of the fruit changes from green to completely yellow. If yours have the right coloring (no green at all) and it's sometime between June-August (check your varieties harvest time) you can feel the fruit at the stem on the tree and if there is some give, it is likely ready for picking! Be sure not to bruise them!
The peach tree I am harvesting from in this video is from a nursery and it's a 6 year old Harvester Peach Tree. It's in its 4th year of production from and it has about twice as many peaches as last year's harvest. I have noticed that all of my organic methods for curbing the plum curculio has helped but not satisfactorily reduced the damage it causes. I think I will begin to test some insecticides next year as the battle seems to be too much.
My Loring Peach Tree should be ready for Harvest come end of the month or first week in August.
I also grow peach trees from seed!

Your neighbor is probably cussing about the mess on his yard. I'd offer to harvest for him. I once had an unhappy neighbor who didn't like my butterfly garden, he never said anything just took it unto himself to spray roundup and kill the hill. I sued him and won. It took big bucks to reclaim that soil there was so much positioning in the ground.

One of my main branches broke from the weight. Had to amputate and spray with pruning seal. My peaches always get ripe before I can pick them and wasps ruing a lot of them.

Great video thank you. What part of Texas are you in? We are also in Texas but my peach tree and peaches are ready in May-June? I’m wondering if I should wait till July like you? But the critters and bugs get to them. Any recommendations?

At this point, I am sorry I ever put in fruit trees. Out of 3 apple trees, one peach, one nectarine, one plum and one persimmon, the only tree that has ever given me some delicious fruit is the persimmon. I should have bought all persimmon trees. I also have an apricot but it is just approaching fruiting age. so I don't know how it will do yet. The rest it's either late frost, fungus, insects or birds ruin my harvest. I guess you don't know until you try. I have much better luck with fruits like blueberries, blackberries, watermelons, canteloupe, other melons and strawberries. The persimmon is wonderful. No spraying, No insect problems, no diseases, not even birds bother them. It's loaded with fruit this year. the only problem I may have is the fruit may be too heavy for the branches and it will kill me to have to remove some.

Yeah - I’m thinking persimmons are the way to go in suburbia as well.
