My mother almost married a McCoy I asked if he was from the hattfield McCoy group that were dire enemies and he said yes he was. I can believe it he had the most horrible temper until he found out he was dying of cancer then he found Gods grace and made amends to my mom .

I have heard so many story's of the Hatfield and McCoy's and I have never heard that Anderson got the nick name drvils back bone I have heard by other hatefild family that he got it as a teen out hunting and he got it from killing a bear and after fighting and killing the bear that his dad and other close family agreeing that the nick name he ended up with was because his dad said by God he fought like the devil and kilt that bear and that is how devil got attached to anise which is what the family had called him by since a youngen and that is how he got the nick name devil Anse which is short for Anderson back in those days now this is the first and only time that he got the name devil from during the war so I don't believe it as at least 40 times I've heard it as how I described it from there Hatfield family so he must have heard it wrong

He would make squirrel stew the first time I ate his squirrel stew I didn't know he put the head in I went to get me a bowl at the stove fishing around in thier for a back leg head pops up to the top I look around said you put the heads in he said that's the best part. Kinda got get used to seeing that squirrel skull with them teeth shining at ya when you get a bowl. Good stew

Well I'm kin to the McCoy family also. I've always been told that when Harmen was killed that it was his daughter's footprints in the snow . The other guy is the one who found him died. I think all of us that live in the Appalachian area have different stories about the feud. My grandma had pictures, newspapers, bullets and much more about the feud. I've seen almost every movie about this feud and video I can find and everyone has a different story. I don't even think the papers got it right back then. One reporter made his was to talk to Devil Anse. Nobody ever ask Randall his side. And it didn't start over a pig. I can't stand that lie. Yes we are Hillbillies and proud of it but we are smart people. Heck how many of y'all out there can put food on your table without a store? Myself I think ole Randall got the worst of it. Children dead wife never the same house burned. He ask for justice and never got it. They hung cotton top. No other Hatfield for the murders. After all he went through in life the man burns to death. I still walk the trail from time to time just thinking about why that feud had to happen anyway. I hope they have finally found peace.

I am related to Frank Phillips of the feud fame. Every story of the Hatfield-McCoy feud that I have ever heard has interesting variations. Too much time and too much embellishment has passed to ever know the real details. The Hatfield-McCoy Feud was the first example of “yellow journalism” in the United States or into today’s terms : exaggerated facts written to sell newspapers or other media. Many other families in the area including Blankenships, Clines, Dotsons, Hurleys, Rowes, Vances etc. were also involved in the feud.

My grandmother on my dad side was Georgia Hatfield. She married my grandfather Matthew Williams. They got married in the late 1920 move to Colorado to get into cattle ranching. They got some of there cattle stolen and got out of the cattle business. The bought a old bar and motel . It had old poker tables old spending wheels. This is in the late 1920's. The had alcohol gambling and rooms. In 1935 the new York mob came in and broke all of the gambling table's and the new York mob told them to leave town it was Colorado Springs they left and went to texas.
