Thinking we should totally make shirts that say, "It's a whole thing" because we find ourselves saying that A LOT out here.
In this video we show you how we're hauling water for now, until we get our rainwater harvesting setup built :)

If there’s anything that makes you appreciate the beauty of water it’s living off-grid! I’ll never again take it for granted. Hope y’all get all the kinks worked out soon. 😊Pam

Did that for years. I used a 390 gallon tote on an inexpensive Harbor Freight trailer. Towed it all with my 1974 Ford Courier. Extremely dangerous. Now I have the water delivered 2000 gallons at a time. However when your in the desert you have to get water any way you can.

Makes us all appreciate our water a little more. Is there not enough head pressure from the large storage tank to fill the Airstream? Maybe the Airstream is higher than the tank. 👍👍

Yes! We appreciate water so much out here. Not quite enough pressure, though we are at a gradual slope downhill from the tank. We are just using our Airstream as though we are boondocking, which I guess, technically, we really are:)

@@TinyShinyHome , you can use water bladders for the sinks and shower, if you are able to get enough pressure to fill them. I've seen this done in Australian videos. The bladders are stored on shelves above the place the faucet is used, so there is water pressure.

If you bought a structure about 15 or 20 feet off the ground, large enough to hold the full 2500 gallon water tank, you would have water pressure to your locations. But then pumping the water up would be harder. Nice video, thank you for sharing !!

Get an on demand well pump from harbor freight with the 1' inlet and outlet. Then hook up the lines and connect to the city water inlet on the Airstream. Then you dont have to transfer water when the internal tank is low. I do this on a trailer I have in Montana.

I'm wondering (haven't sifted through comments nor watched entire video yet, sorry) if you are using your gray water? If I had limited water, I would also consider reusing some laundry water: using wash water for lights first and darks last, in small loads and then use rinse water once for each but reuse the rinse water for gardening or for a toilet if one is hooked up to the septic.

Wow, you got a water tank in already that is fast, but if you are using that much water you must have gotten your septic in already also!

I just saw your video, I think that you are on the way to have a rainwater catchment system, but it would be interesting to have a raised space for your truck to be higher than the tank, and transfer the water with pure gravity. Great videos!
@TinyShinyHome
@TinyShinyHome 2 года назад
Thanks, but the physics just don't work. The 2600 gallon tank is 8' tall. No way it would gravity feed, and even if it did it would take 10x as long. We're doing 4-6 runs at a time.
@driverguy7

I think he was inferring that you build a ten foot high structure for your truck, with a ramp, then let gravity pull the water down into your 8 foot tall storage tank.

Hi... I know this is an old vid. But I heard a rumour that if you haul you water... A child 14yrs or older can apply for a hardship drivers licence and they can go for you! I had one at that age (I'm from WY tho) but I live in AZ and heard that type of thing is permitted here. Also if you lose ur driver's license or your vehicle loses its lights or tags are out of date... U can still haul water. Things to look into😎

Looks intriguing, My plan is a bit different, I hope to use gravity by mounting My main Storage on a 4' platform and closer to My RV, I'll be using two 275 gallon IBC tanks, one for the RV and one for the Trailer I have set up for hauling. Also I plan on a Submersible Pump in the one tank for transfer to My other Tank. I'm going small to start, tight budget, and all our kids are grown, so it's just the Wife and I now.. whoot! Good luck on Your Journey, I'll be watching! 👍 😉

I think you have enough water in you tanks to gravity feed your trailer. Not sure how much pressure your hot water needs. But as long as your water level is higher than your faucets it should work without a pump.
@TinyShinyHome

It’s not quite enough pressure. Just trickles out here. Perhaps if we had more water in the big tank? We’ll have to experiment:)

@@TinyShinyHome Have you looked into a pressure tank set up. They work really well and only run the pump when water is being used.
@zolotones1046
@zolotones1046 4 года назад
Gravity is definitely the way to go. Even if you bought another IBC and set it up on stilts next to the big water tank, you should be able to create enough head pressure to get to the trailer. Just look at all the elevated water tanks you see on the old homesteads. Wind turbine to pump up into the tanke and then gravity for the discharge. Good luck with your projects!
@TinyShinyHome
@TinyShinyHome 4 года назад
@@HighDesertHomestead Yeah that's our next project so that we are running pressurized water into the city water inlet and don't have to transfer anymore. But its' also a whole thing. Have to run power to it, create an insulated pump hose for when it gets cold, bury the lines, etc...

Does the Airstream have a 12v pump for water from the onboard tank? If yes, can you re-route the pump from a garden hose hookup from the large storage tank?
@TinyShinyHome
@TinyShinyHome 4 года назад
Yes, the Airstream has it's own 12v pump, that's what we're using after we transfer the water into the fresh tank. But it's only run to circulate water internally, it can't transfer the water from the other big tank. In our 5th wheel we had something like that where we could turn some switches and turn the pump into a suction pump. But it's not plumbed or connected that way in the AS.
@ensiv74
@ensiv74 4 года назад
@@TinyShinyHome I did not mean to use the onboard pump as a transfer. With the amount of water you still had coming through the hose with the transfer pump off you should have enough supply to just use the onboard to pull directly form the large tank. The only draw back is having to leave the garden hose across the ground unless you bury some pipe.
@TinyShinyHome
@TinyShinyHome 4 года назад
@@ensiv74 I don't *think* it works that way (plumbed to suck from the fresh tank, not the lines), but you've got me curious. Gonna try it at some point soon.
@ensiv74
@ensiv74 4 года назад
@@TinyShinyHome Just trying to help since your spoiler alert said it did not go well. Not sure how you plumbed the onboard pump to the onboard tank but it may be worth it to install a diverter valve (similar to a garden hose Y valve) and make an outside connection point where you can hook up the large storage tank via garden hose.

We checked with a few folks and it seemed cheaper. We pay about $45/mo for 2000 gallons - and if we needed more it's only $3/1000gal. So if we scaled it would definitely be cheaper. More than that, though we liked the option to haul it ourselves whenever we needed it and not have to worry about getting on someone's schedule. The only real downside is the time we spend hauling it. Tradeoffs 🤷🏼‍♂️

Did you try letting the water pressure of the tanks volume push water into your airstream's fresh water tank? Doesn't seem like you should have to run a pump. We are in a motorhome with two 3000 gallon tanks. I'm just setting up and don't have them filled yet. But thought I wouldn't need to run a pump. You can also use a compressor to create more water pressure in your tank. just wondering.
@TinyShinyHome
@TinyShinyHome 3 года назад
Unless you've got a good sized hill you can put the tanks on, you'd need to build platforms strong enough to hold 3000gal tanks up 10+ feet in the air to get any kind of gravity pressure. But even then it wouldn't be enough consistently to work like city water. We did the whole "transfer into our fresh tank each day" thing for a few months, and it was a slog. We ended up building a solar powered pump house with 12v RV pump and accumulator tank. Works great. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zJiOVsNgYxE.html
