Mark Crossfield tests the new Cleveland golf XL launcher Halo irons and asks have golf irons been redefined. The golf iron has looked very similar for many years where the HALO XL Launcher irons challenge the ideas of a set of golf irons and what is the best golf iron. Cleveland golf have been making the Launcher hybrid/ iron golf sets for years and they definitely promote mixed emotions among golfers looking for the perfect golf club and the best irons in golf. What could the launcher XL Halo irons do for your golf game and how could they help golfers lower their scores and play better golf. Mark takes these new golf irons onto the golf course as well as showing you the data from such a different looking golf iron.

I have been playing the Launcher HB Turbo irons (4-P) for the past two years. They really are as close to legal cheating as I think it is possible to get! I'm playing off a 9 and just love the forgiveness. As Mark says, if you like hybrids, then these clubs are perfect. I've had no problem controlling distance or stopping these clubs on the green. I would absolutely recommend these irons.
@laxbro7ify
@laxbro7ify 2 года назад
I have the HB Turbos -- incredibly forgiving. It's actually hard to screw up shots with off-center strikes. They won't save a horrible swing, but they do offer the best result for a flawed, average, intermediate, etc...swing. I can draw and fade them a bit with them, and they pitch and chip well. I've been learning over the last 11 months and am breaking 90 regularly now. The way I look at it, if golf gets too easy (yeah, right....) in the future, I can play something less forgiving. For now, mine are great. I imagine these new ones are similar. If your ego will let you, and you are a mid handicapper or higher, give em a try. You can use the extra range time on short game and putting.

I played my first round with these yesterday and scored 2 birdies for the first time ever. I hit some incredible shots with these, some from deep rough, still came out like a rocket and straight as an arrow. Update: Played a few rounds now and already I'm playing super confidently with them, so well in fact that I've retired my chipper because the 7 iron does the same job better, and I'm looking into ordering the 4 iron to complete the set at which point I'll retire my 4 hybrid and 5 wood, the halos are so consistent and forgiving, the little extra distance gained from a wood is nerfed by its inconsistency and ability to put me in hazards. If all goes well, my bag will be: G425 max driver 4-pw xl halos 48,52 and 56 cleveland CBX2s Spider x putter

@RKCHUX I'm still absolutely loving them, there aren't any cons of these clubs from my perspective, they generally fly straight, they are super easy to play and they are the most forgiving clubs of all time. My bag is now: a 12 degree G425max driver (I have it set at 14 degrees and get around 230yards total (180 carry)) Xl halo 5 wood - my favourite club in the bag (goes around 180-190 yards) Xl halo 4 hybrid (170 yards) 5-pw xl halo irons A cleveand smart sole chipper (genuinely a godsend club, this saves strokes every game) Cleveland cbx2 wedges (48, 52 and 56) - these are very nice too, I feel confident with them Odyssey 2 ball eleven putter My whole bag is setup to be the most forgiving I could find. And it works. I've only been playing for 2 years and I shoot 85-90 pretty regularly.

I had a set as well. I dislocated my hip about 3 years ago and, when I came back, I needed to swing much easier (doctor's orders) and I couldn't get any distance out of my clubs. So, I got the older version of these clubs based on your review back then. It really helped get loft and a bit more distance with the slower swing speed. It helped me enjoy the game while recovering from the injury. I don't play them anymore now that I am healthy but, when I get much older where I need the help for distance and loft, I would have no problem going back to them.

Thanks for the test of the Cleveland new irons. I have had my eyes on these since the day they released them. I'm leaning towards this set, but I'm an old-school golfer, who loves the muscle, and blades irons. I have tested the first version on the old Cleveland irons and love the way they feel and how much easier it is to launch them in the air. You are spot on with the high launch and low launch of weekend golfers like myself. I am one who can launch my irons low to mid, but that high launch has eluded me for years, and I think these will solve that problem. Thanks for the review once again. Oh, by the way, I would love to see you play or do a test run with the old vs the new set.

At the time I was rebuilding my swing and balance because of a stroke, I'm 68, I decided to get a set and found a used set of the older HB's before they came out with the turbo model. I love these clubs. I see they have a new version and I would like you to test them against the turbo version. I bet there isn't much difference in the specs. Thanks for all your reviews of these clubs which was one of the main reasons I tried them and ultimately now game a set.

Thanks Mark for helping to dispel the “if your not playing with something that looks like a butter knife you’re not a real golfer” myth. I suspect a big benefit will be the poorly struck long iron shots. I accept from what you demo’d in the vid that they aren’t a panacea for an off centre strike but when I miss-hit a 4 or 5 iron I’m taking 30 yards off the shot. I’m currently off scratch (it’s not going to last) and would definitely play these. The longest club I can hit with confidence is my 6 iron (Taylormade P790s) so I’m going to take a serious look at these as replacements for my 4 and 5 irons.
@Alan_Edwards
@Alan_Edwards 2 года назад
I started using more hybrids to replace my longer irons and it really helped me to enjoy the game more. Let's face it golf is hard enough and not everyone has the time to dedicate to the hours of practice and/or lessons it takes to be able to use a forged set of player's irons - I know I don't. If it makes the game a little easier for the casual; golfer and gets more folks interested in playing golf...well, personally I am all for it. Good video and subject. Decided to take these for a test drive at the pro shop near me. For someone who has struggled to hit the ball first and tend to hit a slightly fat shot about 30-40% of the time, I think these could be a real game changer for me. How they look matters not a single bit.

I game the older said based on your recommendation and I love them! I don’t care about the looks, that’s not why I play golf. I’m looking for performance and these deliver no matter the conditions! I would love to see you play with this newer set. Love the content!

as I"ve gotten older, I"ve progressively replaced irons with hybrids to get a little help with control. I have played 3, 4, 5 from an HB3 set now for 4 years. The single greatest benefit I have seen is with distance. I found about 5 years ago that my 3, 4, and 5 all went roughly the same distance. Moving to hybrids solved that for me.

I hear you CB… I’m up to a 26 degree hybrid due to age/injury and it sucked taking the 5-iron out at first, but it was the right move. I credit Mark with teaching about launch years ago and it changed my game coming to understand what needed to change in my equipment to fit what had changed in my body. I’ve been eyeballing these Cleveland’s for a few years, but I just couldn’t get past how weird they look. They are looking better now though; especially since I have fully gotten over the lust of my old blades and similar “player” irons. I just want to keep my hcp in single figures as long as possible

@@Mboogie69 I used my son in law's "players" irons. It is amazing how much better the Cleveands looked after that embarrassing round. A blended set 4-7 in the Cleveland and then 8-GW in a cavity back that you can shape a little easier makes sense to me. They are draw biased clubs, but I could fade them with a bit of effort. I would have kept them , but my wife wanted them back. (Old guy, handicap 12)

Enjoy your videos, very informative. After watching your videos numerous times, I would try the clubs every time I went to the pro shop. First time hitting them, I knew those where the clubs for me. I’ve rebuilt my whole set of clubs thru this year after watching your videos and your reviews on Cleveland clubs. Just got my halo launcher xl irons a month ago 5i-9i, love the feel of them. I’m a Cleveland club gamer know with launcher xl driver, launcher xl 3 wood, launcher xl launcher 3hy wood, launcher 4 hybrid, halo xl launcher irons, cbx 44deg wedge, all 3 smart sole 4 wedges gap, sand and chipper, Huntington Beach 10.5 putter. All chosen after watching your review videos.

Mark, kind of a technical question. What do you think about the D-Plane implications of an all hybrid set? Certainly, the need for a significant downward angle goes away, which may actually be beneficial for some golfers. I think a set like this challenges the reason you deliver the club a certain way, potentially opening up the avenue for more neutral delivery.

gday Mark i had an old wilson rescue years ago and to get the ball out past 200 was a weapon off any surface . nothing wrong with those clubs just like a bag of rescue clubs , its all about playing and enjoyment , when i get to old and not mobile enough to hit and enjoy i will be playing these or similar for sure , what ever gets you out and about on a course somewhere stirring up ya mates and getting exercise cant be wrong , people get too caught up in how they look , doesnt matter what you hit to get to a 200 yard par 3 as long as you get it on and it holds so you can have a putt , what an amazing ,fun,frustrating game we play , keep up the good work mate always great content pushing boundaries and ideas ,been watching since all your kids were babies and now they probably leaving home ,

I am returning to golf at age 62 after a 16-year layoff. I tested the Clevland Turbo Launchers (previous generation) and really liked them. I ultimately purchased a similar club from the Tour Edge dealer in my local community. These hybrid irons are fantastic, and I really don't care if I get any razzing regarding their appearance. Golf is hard enough, and I will gladly take any additional help provided by these innovative clubs. Nice job Cleveland!!!

I just got a full bag fitting today ... I ended up with the Mizuno JPX Fli-Hi iron replacement thingies ... all the way down to 7 iron. They look more like a traditional hybrid than what you have here and the Mizuno JPX 921 hot metal for 8 through GW. The thing is, is that I am not even what most people would consider a bad golfer who needed that much help (8.7 index currently) ... but the gapping, the launch, the spin, the dispersion was just so much better/more consistent than any traditional iron we tried that I didn't think twice. I expect that I will be in the 3 or 4 handicap range within a few months .. and to me, that is the most important thing.

@@Jack-xy4fyThis past Friday, I ordered new irons, a wedge and a cart bag from Pine Meadow Golf. Pine Meadow makes clone golf clubs. The irons are their model "PRE Progressive Hybrid" fashioned after the "Cleveland Launcher HB". The cost was half of what they wanted for a set of Clevelands. I also ordered a 56 degree wedge and a bag. All in, I'm at $590.00. I will follow-up with more info when I receive them.

I have the the hb turbo hybrid irons, and I love them. They did take some getting used to, looking over them during set up was tough at first. Especially the 5, my lowest iron. And personally I think they look great, but that's just my opinion. With the most important thing about them being they improve the game of a high handicapper that plays exponentially less than I did decades ago, they work for me. And I have no illusions of playing in front of TV cameras on Sundays, nor would I want the frustration of trying to hit blades like those guys do. I have fun, enjoy them, and recommend people give them a try if considering a new set and if you have a high handicap.

I have similar speed as Mark and I also played these (4 and 5 iron) and loved them. They spin higher than most game improvement irons so they're not the longest irons around, but that spin allows you to attack a pin more aggressively. If you're the type of player that has low launch and lots of runout on the green with other irons, these will launch higher and stop faster even if you have to pull outa longer iron than those other distance irons that drop spin to get more distance. As an example I have both a sim max 4 hybrid 22 degrees and last generation 4 launcher iron 20 degrees. The sim max goes 220 yards and rolls out on the green. The Cleveland goes 205 and stops on the green. It doesn't seem to make sense since the sim has 2 degrees more but they're just different amounts of spin. Both are useful but the Cleveland is the one I would choose to hit into a green since it stops within just 2 or 3 feet.

Performance! Performance! Performance! I’ve been playing the Launcher HB Turbos Regular flex for about a year which have helped my game but I need more distance as a Senior. I just picked up my Launcher XLs Senior Flex and plan to test/use them for the first time on Sat. I had them regripped with Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G Midsize as I don’t like the standard Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips that are standard.

Absolutely love these clubs. Which gives thanks to your review, which I watched maybe four or five times. Plus others. I was a little jealous seeing them reviewed all over the place, and a Brit living in the Philippines didn't expect to ever see them here. Yet, I found them for sale, and not much more than pricing in the UK or USA. Spent a weekend hitting them at our dodgy range before playing on a Monday. Luckily, like you, I'm a hybrid guy, so for me they looked perfect. Distance longer than my TM M3 irons, but targeting is way above what I was expecting. It goes where you aim. Unless one of those left toe or heel hits. Overall best irons I've ever had. Btw, 64 years old. So these help with a body which is dying quicker than paint drying! 😂
