In an effort to learn new ways of reviving her own native language, one Hawaiian exchange student came to Aotearoa to learn te reo Māori at the University of Waikato. It was an experience that opened her eyes to the value of immersive learning.

This is awesome. We're all one people, all Polynesian languages and cultures have so many similarities because we all basically have the same ancestors. There's a saying 'We were all on the same boat, just got off at different places", we're all basically cousins in a way. #PolyPride ✊✊ #KanakaMaoli #Māori

juntao11 Maoli is another way of describing ‘the people’ maoli 1. vs. Native, indigenous, aborigine, genuine, true, real, actual; very, really, truly. Maikaʻi maoli, very good indeed. Kanaka maoli, ʻōlelo maoli, Hawaiian native, Hawaiian language [so used in reports of 1852 legislative session]. E puka ai ka makemake maoli o ka mea koho, expressing the free will of the voter. Beautiful to watch these. I was born in Australia to an italian father and a maori mother (sadly both have passed). I thought i knew something about my mum's culture until after she died back in 2013 and I realised I knew very little, even my older half brothers (born from my Dad's first marriage, pure italians) knew more than I did just from a google search. After mums funeral I called my sister (like me, half italian half maori but has lived in NZ since 1993 and is married to maori), she gave me earful (rightly deserved) and told me where I should go to learn. Since then I've befriended many maori ex pats here, one of the older gents even tried to teach me Whakairo (which I was crap at, but was nice of him). For me the whole experience has brought me closer to my mum, I'm pretty sure she'd be proud.

love my Maori! especially when you see other ethnicities coming here to see how we've kept our reo/culture alive and thriving, so they can take what they seen, lived and learnt back to their people. where it be Hawaiian's, American Indians etc...we're leading the way. I'm so THANKFUL for our forefathers and mother's that fort to kept our language and culture alive, cause without them we would be another English speaking Indigenous Peoples.

Hawaiian is very closely related linguistically to Samoan and Maori. It is important I edit this comment to include Tahitian root ancestry in Hawaiian language. Tahitian speech is very significant as a root ancestor in the evolution of the Hawaiian language.

Not to samoan, samoan is a western polynesian language, hawaiian is closer yo marquesian, tahitian, te reo ipukarea, maori, etc... samoan is closer to tokelauan, tuvaluan, i can understand around 75% of the tokelauan and tuvaluan language, when i compare it to hawaiian maybe around 30%... i grew up on maui but didnt go to hawaiian immersion like my mom wanted me to... im learning now, wish i had taken olelo hawaii in school

Hawaiian, Samoan, and Tahitian have strong similarities... also pre colonial... our languages were very similar. Due to intra-island travel between these islands, intermarriage of royal classes existed between the islands and early trade.

Yes, the OTahitii ancestry element is very apparent and strong in Niihau Hawaiian Niihau Hawaiian is Aboriginal, Original Spoken Hawaiian. OTahiti speech is very clearly heard in Niihau Hawaiian. This reveals Tahitian influence.

Fug Babylon tokelauan, niuean - we are all from the same Whanau many centuries ago but as we adapted to our own island and lands our cultures changed as did the language, language is still evolving, people say Maori is different to how it was back when, but as time goes things change, take English for example.

All Polynesian people are one people. We were called the Lapita people. The word Polynesia was a name Europeans gave us. We were a nomadic sea-farring people. We each settled in different islands and, over time, the language evolved separately but still we can still see the similarities in language and culture.
@stevejohnson5887

There were more than one migrations to polynesia. Polynesia is what happens when the South East Asian bloodline (Lapita) mixes with the Peruvian/Maya and meet together in the ocean. Even if I'm wrong there was always more than one bloodline from different places

Cook islands the elder brother??? Yet the Hawaiians are even older. Look, A key component on why they turn to NZ is because of the Pākeha System and how they try so hard to wipe NZ Māori and Kanaka Māoli out whether it be through drowning out language or outright War. These tragic confrontations dont apply to Cook Island Māori
