Used a butcher most my life for my pigs. The way I fed them only cost my time and energy and I would sell one to the butcher for every one I had brought home. So I would send two pigs and get 1 back with a check for around $250

Cool! I like that idea of trading for the services, and leaves the butcher with food for themselves, or for sale to someone who can't afford to raise animals!

aww red it wrong at first was thinking Pricey $250 plus a hog. lol. we sell or avg Hogs 300-700 (sell $300-700 time a year changes of course we have to many so have to) big as 1500 - 2000 lbs (Dad sells them at auctions) Always demand all the belly skin on the meat lol. we don't eat trotters or head but we like the skin and ears for our dogs to smoke and dry also the organ and tongue to make dog food, We eat and use the blood for blood pudding and we take all the fat to. to render for drippings, liver and kidney we do eat... oh and we take the intestine for the sausage some for the dogs to. we pressure cook it then, air fry it krispy my dogs love them grandma too LOL.

I am patiently waiting to be in a position to grow my own everything. I just got my first job after 17 years of not working and my husband just got a fantastic job that he finally is happy at and now we can start saving to get our own house because we are renting an apartment. I want cows, chicken and a couple of pigs to raise for butcher and for eggs, milk, etc. I love 💕 growing a garden already even though it’s just a small one but, it’s so satisfying knowing what’s in my veggies and fruits. Love ❤️ you all so much and thank you for sharing everything you do with us. Super inspirational ❣️🤗❣️

When we got a side of beef, I thought we would never get through the mountain of ground beef. Then I bought a jerky gun (from Lehman's, I think) and we made 30# of ground beef jerky. I thought it would last for months but we ate through it in an embarrassingly short amount of time. We actually ran out of ground beef before we ate through the steaks!!

Ive been raising our own meat, chickens, pigs, cows for years and Its never cheaper, but you know what its been fed and how its been raised. So much better than store bought. That’s the idea of raising your own and always having it on hand no matter what happens in the world. Will be interested to see how long this really last you.

@@shelleysimmons2804 yes it’s easy. The only drawback is keeping it from separating while it’s cooling down. You gotta keep shaking the jars ever so often. So start canning early in the day so that you’ll have the whole day to keep up with it. My first batch I did later in the afternoon and thought it would be ok to go to bed but the next morning they all had about quarter of an inch of darker butter on the bottom. It all tasted good though.

Wisconsin here. We bought beef from a friend. It was $2 a lb to him, then cost .68 lb for processing, and .15 lb for grinding. Add in slaughter and disposal fee, and it was still less then $3 a pound. So much cheaper then from the store, and we know how it was raised.

We live in E TN. We buy beef from a local farmer who charges 1.76./lb live weight. We paid $608.50 to have the last, Jan 2022, steer butchered. The final cost is usually $6 - $7 / lb. Some may say that is too much for burger, however that includes the steaks, organs, roasts, fat (tallow) and bones. Totally worth it. We know where our meat comes from and where / how / what they were raised / fed. y'all are doing an amazing job! Keep up the good work / teaching / inspiring.

We are in southwest Missouri. We don’t raise our beef, but my family runs a beef farm. We typically buy a half every 1-2 years. We are a family of 4 but our kids are teenagers. Typically price for us is around $1.50lb live weight for the cow and around $200 for the butcher. We bought our last half in November. We ended up paying just at $4lb avg. While that’s not a huge savings on ground beef it is a huge savings on a filet or roast. And yes, nothing tastes like homegrown beef! I would encourage anyone to buy from a farmer! My family sells retail cuts for those who don’t have the space for a ton of meat. So worth it! And yes, while not always cheaper the biggest perk is knowing where your food comes from.

Cook the ground beef in a skillet, put it in pint jars, fill with distilled water and turn on the canner. That is what I do when all of our freezers are full and I need more room. Then I use it for pasta, casseroles and soups....y'all know how easy canning makes your busy lives. I promise it's totally worth it! We are nurses and have almost no time now. We get our beef from a local farm, 3-4 steer a year plus a hog or 2. I can the all of the stew meat and half of the burger meat almost immediately to make enough room and our busy lives easier. I do leave some meat back because my husband loves a good meatloaf;)

The one pound hamburger will make 4 patties for hamburger. There is just me and my husband now and we raise our beef. When we had a family of four, one whole beef lasted us one year eating beef twice a week. Raising our own beef saved me close to $1500 a year. That was for just beef. Raising our own chicken saved me close to $625 a year. We get pork from my husbands uncle who raises hogs. Congratulations to you!!!!!!🎉 l am so proud for you!!!

You should definitely cook and can up some taco meat for garden season. How nice to come in from a long day. Dump and heat with fresh garden veggies. Also can up some chili for lazy nights. And also some plan ground beef for spaghetti night! If you do 36 pounds, that’s 3 easy meals a month on the shelf! Great “rescue” meals for the I don’t want to cook tonight. Also you could cook some and freeze dry for long term storage to free up some freezer space. This would be great to toss on a pizza!

Over at living tradition homestead they run out of room in their freezer to so they sit up their roaster to make bone broth, their crockpot to melt their talon, on their stove melt their frozen butter to make ghee and to can it, same with the talon can it. Bones broth can it. More room in your freezer but don't forget your going to be doing chicken soon so I would just get another freezer. It's nice when God bless you for all your hard work.

Also different butchers will do different cuts. There are the basics but if you want specific steaks make sure you ask for them, and things like bone on rib eye. The one I go to is the one my family has used longer than I've been alive, someone else bought it last year and their basic cuts changed a bit so that threw me. But at the same time she was trying new stuff like beef bacon. 😋

So awesome to have all that meat you grew yourself. Growing up on a small farm (28 acres) we raised beef, chickens and rabbits for meat. Our neighbors raised hogs. We traded meat with them every year so we had pork and they had some of all our meats. Was a great plan. We were a family of 5 and we had 2 large freezers plus the one on the fridge. Worked out to be the right amount of space.

You can save on freezer space (since you also have other animals that will be harvested) by canning some of the meat. When I have gotten good deals on meats I will buy lots and some of it I will can for longer term storage since if in freezer too long you can lose it to freezer burn. I have kept canned hamburger for almost 5 years. Other than ground beef you can take one of the tougher roasts or stew meat and cut it up into large chunks and can and sometimes when you need a quick meal you can open a jar and be ready to go.

We raise Charlois and Charlois/angus cross. When we are not selling the cow we actually kill on the farm and there is a special truck that hangs it up and take its to the butcher and its $75.00. We have to get rid of all the guts, legs, etc ourselves but we have a local family from Asia that comes and gets all the parts we don't want so we literally just bury the poop and intestines. Then to chop and package its about 200.00 When we Butcher for sale, its usually around 500.00 but most of our cows usually end up 700-1200 hanging weight depending on the age and how we finish it out. Our expenses are different because we grow our own hay. We contract fallow fields from retired farmers so we do several hundred acres of hay and only buy grain...but not buying hay you have equipment, equipment maintenance etc. but we can offset some of those costs by selling hay as well. We kill on average 1 per year but this year we will be doing at least 3. We have a herd of 11. We split the meat between 3 families (that which we don't sell)...my parents raise the cows. I do all the chicken and turkey since we have only a small homestead and they have a farm and we share. I do about 200 chickens per year and last year we did 40 turkeys. Welcome to the 5 freezer family! LOL To free up a room I highly recommend canning some ground beef. Adding taco seasoning makes great fast burritoes etc. Canning beef stew is awesome as well and it will cut down on the freezer space issue. Avg. 1lb of ground beef = 1 pint. Good job guys!

If you like Salisbury steaks you can make them out of hamburger. Basically make a meatloaf mix. Make into patties the same size as your wide mouth qt mason jars. Brown the patties. Put a thin slice of onion on the bottom then stack 4 Pattie’s in the qt jar. Add a little beef broth to the jar. Seal like usual and can for 90 min or what is correct for you area. Then when you want to eat them, use a baking spatula under each patty to ease out of the jar. Place in baking dish. Put broth in a pan to heat up and add you choice if thickener, and add mushroom and onions or your choice and pour over Pattie’s and bake till heated thur. Serve with rice or taters. And enjoy. I did the same thing with pork loin with sauerkraut and apples. Browned the meat first it was delicious. That makes for a quick meal and saves space in your freezer.

Looks like y'all need to can some 🍖 beef lol! It's a wonderful feeling knowing you have meat in the freezer that you know exactly what it was fed and how it was raised. My best to y'all!

Good job! Make some bone broth to pressure can while the weather is cooler. And pressure canning some of the hamburger will open up some freezer space.

Thank you for showing us what T-Bone yielded, beef-wise. Many of us who don't own cattle for food have no clue how much meat it yields, let alone the cost. Thank you!

Did you as for the tallow? You could have rendered it for some natural soap or something. Good for you guys! I love learning from your journey.

Nice feeling having home-raised meat. Taste is sooo much better than store! Just a note, be sure to have a good generator in case power goes out/ can most of the meat. We lost over 200 pounds of beef thanks to a short power outage which blew our freezer, in the middle of summer and the alarm didn't go off.

We can't have large animals where we live. We have friends that raise cattle and go in with neighbors to purchase 🕜 . Last year's beef was about three dollars and twenty-five cents a pound packaged. Local grocery store prices from Kroger has ground beef at that time over $4 a pound. I would highly recommend this way if you can't raise your own. God bless your family you're going to need a bigger freezer.

Now that you are back canning and have your freeze dryer, you can cook double meals and put one away for busy days and can ground beef and beef tips for good convenience foods this summer.

Back when we still farmed, we had the luxury of having plenty of pasture to rotate (roughly 120 acres) Our beef was 100% grass fed until maybe 2 weeks before processing. , and then only part of the time, we didn't always finish them off with grain. So, winter hay and normal minerals that were always accessible were the only expense of raising them, and we grew the hay. Processing was nominal, probably around $100, and that included them coming to the farm and dispensing the animal on site. I miss those days for sure! When I was a kid, we raised a steer in a little pasture our neighbor had. I know we had to feed him, and Dad probably paid or bartered the pasture rent. We processed him on the kitchen table, as well as a hog we'd raised too. Last fall, we went in with our daughter on a half hog and it cost us $118 each.
