He saved a RARE engine from a scrap load, & I found the PERFECT vintage car to drop it in! 

Mr. Good pliers: low key and calmly talking about the 427 block he just lucked into. Any other Chevy guy: faints after discovering he just lucked into a 427 Chevy block.

Thats is a really cool find on that big block. just a few thinks to mention. nearly all passenger car big blocks has HI-PERF Pass cast in to them. since all big blocks were supposedly high-performance engines. you will also see TRUCK cast in to some engines blocks. these are usually the 366 and 427 tall deck blocks. that have a raised deck height of .400. The 3963512 casting was used for only 427-inch engines from 1969-1971. 1969 for production and 70-71 were warranty replacement or Crate Exchange engines. looks like yours came out of a production vehicle. while only 1 casting was used, there were 2 different machining processes for these engines depending on which horsepower level you ordered. for 335,360,365,390,400 HP engines they received 2-bolt main caps. for 425,430 and 435HP engine, the received 4-bolt main caps and some additional machining for oil cooler bypass above the oil filter boss. so they have bigger oil fittings in that area. the 335-400hp engines got oval port heads and the 425-435hp engines got square port heads. to be honest, the oval port head is better for daily driving. there is more torque down low in the off idle to 4000 RPM range. in fact, the oval port heads will make more power than a square port head by just upgrading the valve sizes to 2.19 and 1.84 and mildly blending the pockets to fit the bigger valves. those are the good large oval port heads with the "Closed" bathtub chambers. the chambers need a little work around the chamber wall in the valve pocket area to get the best flow out of them. but hey are very good right out of the box. it's easy to make 450HP out of one with very little effort and a mild cam. I would go with the 427 and install a TH700R4. the R4 has a deeper first gear to help set your rolling, and a .70 overdrive to keep the rpms down on the highway. the R4 is week from the factory, but a good HP rebuild, and a torque converter lock up kit and they are very solid. i would 3.42 gears in the rear end. it would a solid cruiser and the big block will have plenty of torque to move that big girl down the road. I would run a Holley Sniper or Fi-tech EFI kit on it for revery day drivability and a vintage Air AC kit for comfort. keep the bench seats would just to a basic paint and body job on it to and fix the interior up long with any rusted items and just make it a nice cruiser / daily driver. so much cooler than the mall crawler SUVs that are really just 4-wheel drive Mini Vans people drive these days.

That would make a great retro build, a two door post with a big block/4 speed and 1960'sspeed equipment and dress up goodies. Not everyone is a LS1 fanatic. The chassis features some interesting fixes to keep it running too 😁😁

In 1965, I was driving through a larger town close to my home and happened to notice a nice-looking, lime green Chevy Impala 4-door station wagon pull up next to me at a stop light. The driver was your stereotypic "little, old man" with the hat pulled down to his ears. Then I noticed the fender flag on the Chevy - yep, it was a "427". That would have been a real sneaky car to hit the stop-light drags on Saturday nights... That's a great find, and it will be an awesome addition to the 69 two-door post...

My father bought an old chevy farm truck to mount 1200 gallon water tank. Was listed on door frame as a 283 v8. When it started acting up we removed it for a rebuild. First thing I noted was bow tie..,then the tuquoise paint on valve covers. Cleaned them off and it said " Hi Torque 327.!" Someone had put a vette engine in the truck.

512 blocks were used up into 1970 and more. There were used as 454 and 427 engines and they all say hi perf pass on the front. They all can be drilled for four bolt main caps. Yours is just a two bolt but the blocks are the same. 427 and 454 engines both have the same bore size, 4.25 inches and thus can use either crankshaft. They 512's are a very good block and highly desirable. Take it to a shop that has a sonic checker and see how thick it is and if it's been bored. I have seen some that were nearly .350 thick on the thrust sides. These can be bored .125 and will make a 482 with a stock 4 inch 454 crank. That;s why these blocks are so heavy.

FYI. 427 block is same bore as 454. 427 and 396 cranks are the same stroke. So, you could put a 454 crank in and have a 454, or put a 396 or 427 crank in and have a 427.

I haven't seen to many 2 dr posts of that vintage. In 1967, a guy I knew, bought a big block powered 2 dr, with a 3 speed tranny. It was the only one like that I have ever seen.

Whenever you find a block, it is always a good sign when someone took the time to put the main caps and bolts back on it. It usually means that if they took the time to do that, the block was rebuildable. If they find something bad, then they usually people just throw them in a pile. Not always true, but a good sign. A good couple of saves

One other thing to remember is that all automotive Chevy big block castings had the PASS HIPERF lettering cast into to cam gear area. The tall deck medium duty truck engines ( 366 and 427 ) don’t have that lettering cast in. Those blocks also have .0400” taller decks than automotive blocks and require intakes made for them or a spacer set to use an automotive type intake on them.

Keep the clutch pedal! I swapped a Buick 3.8L V6 and TH200 automatic into a manual Chevette. I kept the clutch pedal and connected it to the transmission kickdown linkage. 12.8 seconds on the 1/4 mile! My little pocket rocket! Nice block, nice Bel Air. They will go well together.

This was the type of engine you would find in a passenger car like a station wagon or large four-door sedan. These lower horsepower engines used 2 bolt main caps and closed chamber oval Port heads. They used a hydraulic cam shaft and a low-profile cast-iron quadrajet intake manifold. This is a good solid block for a street performance engine and the interchangeability of GM's big block Mark four parts gives you a number of options on how to finish it. I built 2 bolt main 396's that made well over 400 horsepower because I could buy an entire 396 engine for $75. This was in the mid 1970s.

The hi po big blocks came with 4 bolt mains I believe.

If you put that 396 BB in it you need to replace the front end springs with heavy springs for a BB.

Run the vehicle numbers on it to check what car it was in

the 427 stood up to semi and ford 429 the 427 is a beast

Nice find on the big block. I have been running big block engines since my 350 horse Chevelle 396. I still have that engine, as well as a 425 horse 427 warrenty engine, which means that, if I was interested in selling it, it would be ideal for a big block Corvette restoration.. I love those big blocks, and hope you can find a home for it.

Great find and an awesome project! I am restoring the 67’ Impala 4 door hard top my grandfather bought new with factory 396/TH400. It’s a lot of work for sure.

First, I hope everything you're dealing with/working thru gets better as quickly & positively as possible. All were great scores, as has been said by someone famous, "I'll take luck over planning any day." certainly applies to the engine find!! Not to rain on an idea, just food for thought tho, MAYBE that 427 engine would be a good transplant into that '69 wagon - yes I'm making that plug again. It's already a big block car with all the correct parts right there, & something tells me you can also see the resale potential in a high performance luxo barge. Hang in there best you can, we'll be here when you got more.

Definitely needs that 427, if you can piece it together for cheap. Also seems logical to take as many parts as possible off the 4 door. So BB and Auto trans is my favorite choice. Otherwise SBC and Auto on the cheap, all detailed out stock appearance

Obviously the '69 Belair needs to get the 427. It gets painted gloss black on black. Steelies and chrome lugs and stiff suspension. Radio antenna and 1969 Texas plates (black). Unmarked Pursuit Special from the Dealer.

I would swap out that frame and maybe just maybe do a 350 engine with a standard transmission as its really a sweet way for them. The big block is out of your league so its a sell to someone needing one if it were me. I am a mechanic of over fifty some odd years and done the floor pans as well. Its a little daunting the first time doing this floor pan thing but so easy when off of the frame. Takes a bit to drill out the spot welds but if the rig is nice and clean... about three hours work to have one out ... then when going in with the pan, its tricky at first but really they just pop in like they want to be in thing... hope I am not over simplifying it. I do enjoy those six cylinder engines as well and they do make a good driver.

Oh yeah 427/400 leave the body as is body color steel wheels little wider than stock with correct dog dish hubcaps

Dad had that same 2 door post, same color with a 327 engine. Traded it in 1973 for a Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser clam shell wagon. Same blue color with the wood grain and 455 rocket.

You have a lot of parts to buy to make a runner from that bare block.

The condition of that block it will cost a foy to make it good

Your BelAir is what I would put the 427 in. I had a 69 Belair that someone had swapped the 6 cyl out for a 327 that had a few mods and it ran great and surprised a lot of people. It must have had the original 6 cyl gears and was a 3 on the tree. A big fun sleeper car up to about 90 mph. It looked just like yours but not any body damage anywhere. I put rallies, a set of headers I had laying around and duals on it of course and drove it like I stole it. It had a mean second gear I remember. First gear was pretty low and got you off the line but you had to shift to second pretty quick because of the rpm's. the 327 cranked pretty fast.

Tim, the Impala is a great find, most of your 396-427 did have the Hi-Performance in the cam cover, the rectangle port BB Chevrolet heads from the High Performance 427-454 did have Hi-Performance cast into them, the low performance 396-427 cylinder heads had Pass cast into them, according to the block numbers you have a good find.

All low deck big block Chevrolets have that hiperf marker. Not a rare engine at all. In fact, this is the exact same block that the 1970 and later 2-bolt main 454's would have used, the only difference of course being the casting number and stamp code information. Identical otherwise. This is a very common engine block.

My first car was a 69 Chevelle with a 396 then I decided to put an L 88 in it so I went to a wrecking yard in Modesto and I paid $300 for the block and then use the heads pistons and everything else from my 396 the car was insanely fast

That tractor you passed on looked to be a Huber Model L, pretty scarce.

My uncle has a 1969 Impala with a factory 427 in it and it has the displacement badge over the front side markers to let everyone know what you about to be messing with. I'm not sure the HP rating but I know it's up there he even has a set of 427 corvette heads that were sought after back in the day before the aftermarket Aluminum heads were a thing.

That pickup would look great with a wood flat bed

A four bolt 512 standard bore block is worth maybe $1500 - $2000. A two bolt standard bore 512 block is worth over $1000. The person to buy it would likely convert it to four bolt, and re-stamp the block to make a phony "numbers matching" engine.

Go with a manual transmission. Be a lot more fun.

if a 69 is your pashion do it a 366 truck has the same crank if i where to build a good motor i would not use a stock rods and pistons when so much better stuff out now and new old stock is just setting on the shelf with the LS nut guys good luck on your ishues

Your 4-Door '69 Impala most likely would enjoy going back on the road.

I like the truck and I like the engine of it. I own a 63 Belair and a 63 Impala with this engine. An extremely reliable workhorse six banger. And while I love my GM V8 engines, the straight six is simple, cost efficient and vehicles with those engines are not gas guzzlers. Your 69 Chev 2 d is a cool car. But there is A LOT of work involved putting it back on the road in a halfway acceptable condition. I probably have quite less mechanical knowledge than you have. I used to work in a body shop so I think I might be able to fix that vehicle bodywise. But I am getting old and my energy starts fading away. And I can not even manage to keep up with the needs of all my Sixties vehicles. You must start a project like that while you are still young enough. I hope you will work ont those cars and keep us updated.

unless you got other bigger plans i think the 427 would go nice in that 69 belair, if the productions dates are close and you can find a turbo automatic that would be the ticket
