Good points! As a producer I notice that using good headphones let’s me know exactly what the stereo image is like as while as how bright or dark a sound is. It’s interesting that you say speakers give a more accurate sound. In my situation I find that headphones do. I’m not sure how different my set of cabinet speakers are from studio monitors because I haven’t got studio monitors yet, but whenever I make something on the big speakers and listen later on headphones, the sounds reveal themselves as sounding much thinner, quieter, and darker than when I was listening back on speakers. imo speakers are great when generating concepts and I can get really excited about the music because I can feel it more, but headphones are great for sculpting the sounds. But who knows, my perspective may change when I get some good monitors!
I think expensive headphones are the way to go for a lot if not most producers. It’s not very often someone will have all the criteria for having studio monitors whether it be living conditions, space restraints, reliable/long-term housing, money, etc. I can get away with listening to my music through car speakers or my relatively cheap Rookit speakers when I need to but I mostly rely on my headphones for all of these reasons :)
Very accurate information, I also find I use both, mix in headphones then listen back on speakers to make any adjustments. Good stuff bro. I use Sony mdr -7506
Great advice and opinion as always, thanks. Yeah, I do a mixture of studio monitors and headphone (mostly because I'm concerned my wife is tired of hearing the same thing over and over 100 times, while I could still hear it again, just one more time :-). I've got Mackie HR824's for monitors, which I really like, and ATH-MX70x's for headphones which I also really like--advertized frequency range of 5Hz to 40KHz. Not hawking them but super clarity--- and to your points: it could sound different from the headphones to the monitors, and who knows what other people are listening on, and the room their in. So I generally mix late at night on headphones to let my wife sleep, monitors in the morning, increasing the volume and walking around the room. I agree with you--separation and effects vary depending on how you're listening and where you are in the room. Then, I throw it on my phone and go listen to it through the car stereo. Send it to some friends, see how much they like it. Thanks again for many great, informative videos!
Really insightful, I have long been using headphones because I wasn't able to afford a pair of studio monitors. But then, the moment I got them, I noticed a huge difference in my mix. They translate well. I was able to get my vocals and bk vox to sit in the mix proper. Thank you so much...By the way, I like your energy and playful act. Keep it coming, brother.
Nice job, Wavy. I've mentioned this before, but I'll do it again ... Although I typically work in different genres, I always learn something from your video drops. Thanks for what you're doing, man. It's appreciated.
monitors is what represents more reality , the sound reflecting in the room change the whole sensation , i also noticed difference in the PAN sensation.. cool content you are right
If you have to choose one, it is deffinatley headphones. Especially if you can only afford one. To get the bass right monitors are irreplaceable. You need both for the the best results.
I really love this i have been using headphones for 6 months and i have not been very sure with my mix but the moment i got monitors my mixs have been changed immediately and the y give me more realistic mix and i love monitors
Agreed on all points. I have Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 Ohm headphones BUT I know the Sony MDR7506 headphones better and my mixes always come out better when I use those. Important to monitor on as many sources as possible. You are right about the panning and effects. You gotta listen through those monitors to really know how good that panning and those effects are.👍🏿
Here's a thought for monitor usage: In the spring of 1980, AC⚡DC recorded their landmark Back In Black album at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas. Engineer Tony Platt took the tracks to another studio in London, England and played the album back though the studio monitors, and then re-recorded it. That's how he got the reverb. And that album went on to be the single highest selling Rock album in history. In fact, the only album in any genre that has sold more copies, is Thriller. But, it's Back In Black that has become a reference recording for a hell of a lot of artists and producers, and not Thriller. -How do you do that? How do you re-record your music to get the reverb that way? And then how do you use an existing album as a reference?
Oh man that was hella cool.. hella tutorial.. hella knowledge.. I keep making beats that's dope and the headphones but when I try to play them out the display to my listeners that's with me I noticed there's different sound coming out the speakers versus the headphones.. you're the truth wavy Wayne.. peace and love brother.. form attack
Great topic....The most useful times headphones have helped have been when I had a really neutral pair (not bright Sonys) and I was balancing and EQing while monitoring in mono, especially a stem or group. However, you need the nearfield acoustics to judge stereo and the acoustics from the big woofer mains to judge the clarity of how that long bass wave unfolds at the back of the room. Your reverb point is spot on, too. I just subscribed to your channel. You have excellent content. Where the f*ck have I been?
The Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 250 ohm Closed-back Studio Mixing Headphones 🎧 one of the flattest headphones out their for the price . They go for about $200 but go on sale often for about $150 and lots of industry people use them .
Hey Wayne Wave you weren't quite right about the headphone stereo field it doesn't just seem bigger It is bigger 180 degree you hear more and there is more to hear some cats would never want to go back to monitors its just more fun all you need is a laptop and a pair of headphones you can even mix in your car infront of your studio Wayne Wave ... You are a cool dude keep doing what you doing !!
Also In headphones 🎧 you can hear if your 808 or kick & Bassline is way too low or hitting to hard to the point it starts to distort in Monitor’s you can’t tell in less you have A1 hearing 👍🏿👍🏿👌🏿👌🏿
ive been making beats for a while but i lost the passion beacause i was tired of not getting the quality sound. i keep trying through my monitors its very tough i just upload it on youtube and take notes on what i need to do smh. great video
I’ve been using headphones for everything in the two years I’ve been beat making. Just bought monitors yesterday and what a major difference. Salute to you for explaining the differences for us!
@@BIanka0200 monitors! by far. I start my ideas in headphones now, but the monitors are essential for a quality final sound... You can listen to my music and tell when I got my monitors... Trust!
Both r important headphones and monitors. Each has different sound story on the same platform.. Those who depend on headphone mix only.. its not 100% ok in my opinion. we need to listen the mix on big speaker small speakers mono speakers.. to fix the total dynamic range of frequencies... Sub , low , mid low ,mid , hi mid , hi.. all these matter most ..
Thank you for enjoying this because his helping us with a studio set-up we have the seed group podcast and we're using some of your suggestions from previous shows even
I am really new to recording and mixing. Until recently I was just smashing out rough stuff with a webcam mic or whatever else I could get my hands on. Anyway, now I am a guy with the gear but no idea apart from studio monitors, I don't have any yet. I just have a set of Edifier bookshelf speakers. I have a Rode NT1-A into a Focusrite Solo. My problem is, when I record my voice using my headphones and listen to it back on them it sounds excellent yet when I listen to it through the speakers I sound terrible.
Wayne I have a dope little set up, ambiance-wise with my LEDs and such, but whay are those two blue lights behind you? Id be interested im a set of those, I like. Thanks for the vids man, theyres always fun.
you be addressing all of my current issues with recording , you stated sounds good in headphones but it doesnt translate elsewhere URRRRGH! and you say listening to music only in headphones would fool you.... im fooled ahaha
Bruh, I use my DT 880 pros to mix and Master. I basically use my car to double check my mix. Honestly though. Anyone can use anything to mix. As long as you get used to your speakers or headphones frequency response, you're straight.
if you make music every day using headphones dont forget to check and clean your ears. Especially if the volume is always above 50% wax build up can dampen the bass.
Hi was wondering if you can help me with this very specific problem. No this is not spam ha. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm headphones that’s sounding just about ok on my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen (which only has one pair of line outs at the back) My question is, should I buy a headphone amp and run it out of the Scarlett headphone out and then connect the headphones to that amp. Or should I just buy a pair of lower impedance headphones... in this case a pair of DT 770 Pro 32 ohm headphones. Which will have better audio quality. Nice video too. Thanks in advance.
I didnt realize how bad my mixes were until I bought some monitors I'll admit some of my old beats on my channel are mixed horribly but now I'm better since I got the jbl 305 then I reference with jbl bt 500 headphones and cheap onn bluetooth headphones and 2 really small surround sound speakers then 2 Panasonic 2 way stereo speakers my mixes sound good Everywhere now.
Almost every engineer spend more money on monitors than headphones, which tells you what they value. Headphones are a tools, there to help the engineer isolate sound. Monitors are simulators, they are there to check playback experience. Headphones are the pan you cook your food in, monitors are the plate you put it on to eat it because you're civilized. You COULD eat hamburger helper out the pan, but your experience isn't going to be normal
I currently use Beats EP's for all of my productions and mixes. If you have any experience with these headphones I'd like to hear what you dislike about them. I also want to know what headphones I should look into getting for music production. Thanks.
I use them for years!!! I can manage to get nice mix with them, but bass just dont translate well. They can handle so much bass that you think its Ok, but in reality its waaay o bassy. So I learnt that my mixes should be low on bass so its “normal” in other references (car, speakers etc)
Aw the baby making you soft...er lol. Good! I got them sennheisers and them HS8's but unfortunately just one of the monitors gets me reported to the POLICE =) LOLL
Im having a hard time mixing with my headphones it doesn’t come like i wanted it to be! It sound good when i was mixing and stuff but once i exported it out it sound different, is it a skill issue or something, i cant afford studio monitor yet
Bro i really have a huge doubt please clear this how to just mix two singers vocal in one song what if one singer is high tenor and another is low baritone how to sit there vocals in one mix so that they both sound good together in one song.??????
