Heartbroken Man’s New House Is Swept Out to Sea 

Who buys a house that close to the ocean? The house foundation is literally built in moving sand.

I NEVER could understand why folks would want to build and live in a home THAT close to the ocean.

There should be laws against building so close to the ocean for environmental reasons and for scenic reasons. I saw homes too close to the ocean here on Hawai'i Island get taken out to sea from a small tsunami. Plenty of us commented for years about those homes being likely to get wiped out from a small tsunami and when it happened nobody was shocked except for the home owners.

I can’t be heartbroken about this. The guy has money and so must be insured up. Also always perform “due diligence” when buying!

I do feel so bad for these people but at the same time I’m like why in the world would buy a house that close to the shoreline

Although my heart goes out to him, I still stand baffled as to why anyone would purchase a home that close to the ocean, AND on sand.

Is horrible losing a spare beach home... just horrible 😞 🤣

This is sad but inevitable, you can't build THAT close to the sea and expect everything to be fine.

What else do you expect when buying a house that is so close to the water? There is no heart broken, it's the risk that he's willing to take.

Don't feel bad folks, I did some "research" and he has a second beautiful vacation home at the base of an active volcano, so everything is going to be ok!

"Don't build your house on sand" 😢 this is horrific, I do not want to live too close to the beach, on a slope of a mountain or on a river bank, I've seen way too many tragedies happen with floods and fires.

Some people have too much money and not enough intelligence. Hard to feel sorry for someone who build a house on a beach. In North Carolina no less. Just because others do it.

Building that close to the ocean is like parking your car in the Bronx overnight. You just don't do it.

I don’t understand why this “shocked a nation” that’s what can happen when you have a home literally on the edge of the beach touching the water, it’s not good to have homes that close to the ocean and if you do you better make the whole house out of bricks and concrete

Never spent a night in a home on the beach he bought in august...seems like he has money to burn and certainly isn’t homeless 🤷‍♀️

That’s so sad I feel terrible for him What a shame he couldn’t use his retirement home .It looked beautiful. I’m blaming the people who approved the building sight in such an unsafe place .I hope his insurance paid him out .🇦🇺

You can’t convince me that he didn’t do this for the insurance. Look at how far it is from the water, he had to know that house was going to be doomed.

I've seen houses and shops be severely damaged during storms even when they're 20ft+ above sea level and 100+ yards from the high tide shoreline. I can't feel sorry for this type of idiocy.

I feel sorry for him, but I feel more sorry for the creatures of the sea, who have to deal with everything - everything - in that home - every knickknack, every now-broken glass bottle with a substance in it, every piece of plastic, down to the last nail - being swept out into their environment, and having to deal with that

If anything he's lucky he wasn't sleeping in the house or actually living there when that happened. Lesson learned about where to build or buy your house

He waited for this moment all his life.

Looks he had the house built close to the ocean as possible which is why this happened. It was literally in the shallow part of the water who approved this ? They didn't even have anything protecting it.

Well, count me in as one of those millions of people who is utterly shocked that a house which was built 40 inches from the ocean would ever, EVER, be swept away.

I place this with recent videos of people not knowing that digging a 6 foot hole in sand is dangerous, that you don't add water to a grease fire, and you don't buy a beach front house on Cape Hatteras. Have people lost all common sense?

People in CA wouldn't know this, but if you live in NC, you know that this is nearly inevitable for all houses near the beach, and if the house has no dunes between it and the beach, it has a couple years at best before it is claimed by the water.

I'm just going to say this now, even I am not that stupid to know what eventually happens to a "home" which the waves literally touch the house everyday of every hour. I mean at the very least give it ~1,000 feet from the shoreline.

I’m pretty sure I saw that house for sale at leas as far back as 2012 and I remember when it was still very far from the tide. Each year up until last time I was there in 2018, it was closer and closer.

I feel no sympathy for anyone knowingly buying a beachfront house they know the dangers!

I do feel real bad for these folks but bloody hell... Am I the only person who'd NEVER build even a bloody canoe dock THAT close to the ocean? Hell forget a storm, high tide would have rotted away the stilt wood in less than a year while he was in the damn thing!

I wish the guy well but I can't remember ever seeing houses were literally right on the beach and seemingly only a few feet away from the tide. I live in a beach town in Florida and i have never seen that and don't understand being THAT close to the ocean, but good luck to him.

It's more heartbreaking seeing humans abusing the environment and then asking fellow humans to feel sorry for them when nature takes its course.

This is heartbreaking to see your vacation house on vacation. Still hoping for the owner to recover from the tragedy.

What’s heartbreaking is I can’t afford to own one house let alone two.

I'd say he had a fortunate escape. Over my life, I have come to appreciate my mama's wisdom: "don't cry over anything that wouldn't cry over you." It's just a house--if he'd been in it, it would probably have been his life.

Never build a home next to the ocean unless it's in the shape of a boat ⛵.

That's kind of what you get honestly for living that close. You think they'd think of that happening and not put a home there

Reminds me of the parable of the wise man and the foolish man, the foolish man built his house on the sand, and when the storm rose it beat his house to the ground, and the man who built his house on the rock, the storm rose, the winds beat it but it stood still.

Almost feels like an insurance scam knowing this was going to happen before he bought it.

I think for homes like these you should use reinforced concrete columns with a reinforced concrete flooring designed to withstand hurricanes and not wooden columns.

A home can always be rebuilt but thank God his life was spared and he wasn't inside 🙏

I’ve never seen a house built so close to the ocean. It’s on the beach! Like in the water! I’d imagine building on sand is going to be risky no matter what cuz there’s always a chance of a storm being worse than we ever expected.

When you do something stupid don't be surprised when it doesn't work out the way you want it to.

This truly shocked the nation! No one could have thought buying a house 5 steps away from the shore of an ocean could have swept a house away. Climate change is real folks. Next investment idea is to build a vacation home in Ukraine - should be totally safe from water.

Literally went there a month ago, and the first thing I told my wife while driving through is what a beautiful coast, but having a house that close to the beach is absolutely stupid. Is only a matter of time for nature to claim the beach. And then I saw this couple of weeks after. Hopefully they had some good insurance. With background of carpentry I know it takes a lot more than wooden stilts and depths that average home owner can afford to have engineered and built to keep houses that close to the coast from crumbling eventually.
