@@ich3730 Brainstorm is a good cantrip in a vacuum (The thing that pushes it over the edge for me is that it's instant speed). However, no card is played in a vacuum. Very few, if any, cards have ever seen play because they are so strong that they don't need supporting synergies throughout the rest of the deck. Even a card as strong as Tarmogoyf during the height of its power was strong because of the synergy present in the deck (you needed to put very little effort into making your deck synergize with goyf, but it still needed support). So what I said stands. It's a card you need the context for to understand why it's so good, but it remains an excellent card.

I think the most interesting thing with valuing magic cards is the fact that MTG is so ludicrously versatile. It’s hard to guess how good a card is in a vacuum due to the multitude of mechanics that you can both add and have on a card. I.e, trample, x-landwalk, unblockable, flying. That’s why I love magic so much, some cards have little value on their own but combined with specific cards they’re broken.

@Richard Sejour I’ll blame standard for that one. Been playing since OG Innistrad and it wasn’t always like this, which is sad. They never used to have to ban 30 fucking cards per rotation, and honestly the power level was ludicrously stupid back in Innistrad-Ravnica lol Difference being everything was even in power level as opposed to this parity where some cards were just far and away too broken not to be run in decks. As for extended formats, MH2 absolutely FUCKED everything up. The parity is so absurdly wide across the board that this balancing philosophy of old for cards is completely out the window lol

Dumpster diving through old sets in search of stupid combos is one of my fondest memories. Actually Brainstorm is still pretty good even without lots of shuffles, and a lot of the reasons were even touched on by Rarran. There aren't a whole lot of more "intense" cards than Elite Spellbinder for an outsider looking in. There's a lot to misunderstand. For example, one might assume that the exiled card returns to target opponent's hand when Elite Spellbinder leaves play - not the case. Likewise, you might assume that your opponent can no longer cast the exiled card when Elite Spellbinder leaves play - also not the case. They remain exiled and playable regardless of what happens to Elite spellbinder. If Elite Spellbinder's effect is "enters the battlefield" rather than "when you play", meaning it triggers again whenever the card bounces in and out of play. However, you can't target the same cards again because despite the fact that your opponent can still play them, because those cards are exiled rather than in-hand. When evaluating its playability, most people overlook the "nonland" clause, which can often cause the ability to whiff entirely when your opponent has a hand full of lands or instant-speed spells they can get rid of before revealing their hand. The card has a LOT of interactions to unpack

Also the comparison to Secret Passage from HS is flawed when SP can be played with any amount of cards in hand, so it can effectively just draw you 4 cards for that turn. Additionally HS as a digital game has the capacity to generate cards which stays after SP shuffles the drawn cards into your deck. If SP read "at end of turn shuffle your hand into your deck" it would be quite a bit worse but still very playable.
