I had a similar upbringing. I was baptized in the Orthodox Church over two years ago now. Praise be to God.

@@LadyMaria Well Mormonism isn't a restoration of the canaanites but has been trying to be a restoration of early Christian teachings. Mormonism tries to create a better story that attempts to give answers where answers didn't exist. Joseph Smith was only in his early 20's when he was putting this new religion together and so his understanding of the Bible wasn't always accurate and most of the time he was borrowing from other works of religion that he really liked, such as Emanuel Swedenborg. Now there is evidence that Joseph Smith may have been taking psychedelics and I have a theory that I haven't been able to prove yet, but I am thinking that when Joseph Smith had his leg surgery at 10 years old, that his father may have been giving young Joseph psychedelics regularly for his pain. With a young developing brain this could cause permanent damage and delusional experiences and Hallucinations. Joseph's first child was born completely deformed and died shortly after birth and Joseph's youngest son suffered mental illness and had to be put in an insane asylum at the age of 30. These are signs that mental illness could run in the family and may have been induced through the use of psychedelics. The religion of Mormonism is dramatically changing as the people and church leaders continue to learn more about the real history. This new knowledge and understanding will lead to the elimination of the truth claims as the only true an living church, but before they can do that they need to influence members of the church to look at scripture as non-literal teachings and how we can take the stories and apply them into our own lives for spiritual and personal growth. I believe that is why they have implemented a new teaching manual called "Come follow me". The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does some great things in communities and have been helpful to a lot of people. However I also think it has caused a lot of damage through manipulation, deception, and lack of remorse for the damage caused.

@@LadyMaria I personally think it is wrong to classify a religious group like Mormons as being Christian or not. Christianity I believe is an individual thing for example even though I am a mormon doesn't mean I buy into or accept the Mormon doctrine.

But yet many say that isn't true, or they don't believe that, or that the LDS Org. never taught that, etc. It's so confusing to me, an outsider.

@@LadyMaria the LDS church has watered down their beliefs over the years. I'm 69 and I read gospel doctrine and all the other books put out by the church when I was a young married woman because when I went through the temple for the first time I found what they did in there very strange. They never really talked about polygamy much but it was in their books that taught what Joseph Smith the founder believed and taught. The only comfort the church gave married women at the time was that if you were the first wife you would have to approve of any future wives even though Joseph Smith's wife never got to do that. He even tried to keep it a secret from her. When I really got to know that in the next life I would be living polygamy, being a goddess and having lots of babies to populate other planets It sounded like hell not heaven to me.

@@LadyMaria It is great but my 3 adult kids their spouses and my 12 grandkids are all still very active. I was a very dedicated member raising them. I didn't leave until I was in my late 50s. My oldest granddaughter served a mission and my oldest grandson is now on a mission. Needless to say we keep our talk about religion very generic. They all love the church I think mainly because it is a friendly church and your neighbors are the members of your Ward. And like I said the church is very watered down now and they do talk about Jesus more. So our common ground is Jesus. They don't mind if I talk about Him or share Christian music with them because the church has finally opened up to the contemporary Christian music and also because the church has gotten involved with the Chosen (the series). They loved watching the Chosen. Also it's really not my place to judge. Only Christ has earned that right. I'm just called to Love.

Heavenly Mother, we are appalled to hear people talking about Heavenly Mother. Instead, I will pray to my Heavenly Mother. Just don't pray to Heavenly Mother! That would be wrong.

When Mormons say heavenly mother, they are not referring to Mary. They are referring to a god who was once mortal and achieved godhood. I think you understood, but just in case you didn't I thought I would add it in. I wish you all the best on your travels towards the Catholic faith!

No Dave is sharing how this is a false doctrine. There is only One God who is Father Son and Spirit. There are no other gods. Our Heavenly Mother is Mary the mother of Jesus because she is the holiest woman who ever lived and is in Heaven praying for us... this is very very diffrent from this mormon doctrine.

LDS believe in three gods (3 essences/beings) which is Tri-theism (an ancient heresy), and "heavenly mother" which is like a goddess but they hardly ever speak of her. She was their lead God's (whom they call Father) earthly and eternal wife and they were good proto-Mormons in their earthly life. They were exalted. They had their own god or gods before and those gods had their own gods, so on. HM is popping out spirit babies left and right but no one pays her any mind. Technically according to their beliefs there should be millions of "heavenly mothers" as polygamy is required in their idea of the highest part of heaven (the Celestial Kingdom) but no one ever addresses it or it's flat out denied. Yes the true and only God (our God) is likened to a male though being Spirit He cannot be either male nor female in a biological sense. The only member of the triune Godhead that incarnated (took on flesh) is Christ and of course He is biologically male.

It was never a Christian belief, nor even thought of therefore it isn't a restoration. It is still not a Christian belief even in the most heterodox Protestant groups. Therefore it is not a restored truth as it is not a truth. That is another reason why Mormonism is another religion altogether. God has no need for a goddess (that would make four gods instead of three whether LDS want to admit it or not) as He is Spirit, neither male nor female in a carnal sense. Christ God (the Logos) was incarnated to be both man and God fully but He never got married nor had children. He is the only member of the triune Godhead (one God) who has a Body. Also, our souls are created at conception.

Catholics pray to Mary though

Okay? We believe Mother Mary to be the Queen [Mother] of Heaven since her Son is the King of Heaven, and the mother of the king is always the queen mother. She isn't an exalted goddess though unlike "Heavenly Mother".

Yes, Christians do ever read their Bible..lol. Do you? Ever discover what God did and spoke against such worship of false deities?? In every instance of worship to a female deity, God commanded the destruction of that practice and complete annihilation of those false prophets and priests propagating that form of worship. Now we have Mormons elevating a female deity equal to and partner to a false man to godhood deity. Same false practice and deity worship as all the other nations practiced that God called an abomination.

It is not what subjectively makes sense it is a false belief in Christianity. This is a very humanistic belief.

And this is part of why we believe Mormons aren't Christian. The rest is moot. I don't care about other "gods".

Mary is not the wife of a exalted god/heavenly father with flesh and bones. We know all about our Theotokos, but nothing of this Mormon mother who is married to heavenly father. Big difference here.
