I put my PSE EVO NXT 33 to the test with a chronograph. I tested the bow's speed with two varying arrow weights. I have a 52 lb draw weight, 28.5 inch draw length. The arrows used in the test weighed 447 grains and 369 grains.

Greatly enjoy your video channel. Lots of good information. I have been bow hunting for more than 20 years and have been a "go light" supporter. Last year I switched to heavy, weight forward (22%) arrows. Grizzly Stick tapered arrows, 30 inches, 540 grains with tip. Was 1 for 2 last season, the second, a clean miss. Given the arrow speeds you measured (236, 250 and 255) results in a time to target at 20 yards of .254, .24 and .235 seconds and at 30 yards .381, .36, and .352 respectively. The difference between the lightest and heaviest is only .02-.03 seconds. Two to three hundreds of a second. I wouldn't get to hung up on the speed. The energy carried to the target of the heavier arrow far outweighs the loss of a few fps. Obviously, will see more drop over distance, sight pins will just be further apart.

Always fun seeing the differences in arrow speeds. Everyone just please keep in mind, speed is cool but arrow weight is the top factor in penetration. Heavy arrows will always penetrate better when all else is equal. Find that balance. And use a fixed blade broadhead.

A better question than speed at the bow, is what is the terminal energy at a given realistic hunting distance?
@ThatJamesGuy88
@ThatJamesGuy88 2 года назад
I get the idea of where you’re coming from, but arrows don’t carry enough kinetic energy to kill medium and larger game species in the United States. They kill by cutting vital tissues and blood letting. Arrows need kinetic energy to move and to deploy expandable broadheads if used. But momentum is what drives penetration.
@tucker2074
@tucker2074 Год назад
The standard of measuring speed should be done at 10yards, 20, 30 and 40yards from the target using a lighter and heavier arrow with the chronograph right up to the target, the arrow is fastest right from release and would lose a bit over say 30yards, measuring like this would give a hunter a much better knowledge of the potential speed on target

Thank you for sharing your data. I appreciate it. And I would love to see more more weights. What is the speed with a 1000 grain arrow? A 2000 grain arrow? For the weights shown 255fps*(369grain/weight of arrow)^(0.4) seemed to predict the speeds. And suggests that a 1000 grain arrow would move at around 170 fps. I wonder if that would hold in reality. Also, if you have a traditional (non compound bow), I'd like to see how it works relative to arrow weight.

I've got a couple of tips, for gaining speed. 1) You can have your string builder, make you an, 18 strand string, instead of 20 strand string. 2) Shorten you center serving, most are around 5 inches, make 3 inches. If you do this, you can gain up to 8 fps.. I would suggest going to a cut on contact broadhead, if you hunt Elk, you don't have-to spend a ton of cash, Magnus make good heads, I personally, love the stinging, it'sgot a lifetime warranty and it shoots awesome. But call around, you may be able to get companies to send you some for testing... Best of luck, love you guys, much respect.

That Magnus Stinger you like is pretty much an updated version(but not significantly altered) of the venerable old Bear Razorhead designed by Fred Bear back in the 1950's. The fact that it stands up well against all the fancy, new technology heads out there today says a lot for the design!!!
@timberg7377
@timberg7377 3 года назад
@@scotscheideman9800 You are right, I would use Bear , but you can't find them anymore, best head ever made in my opinion, not saying other companies are making bad stuff, but you just can't beat The old bear heads.

@timbow50
@timbow50 3 года назад
Great review on all your points. Total arrow weight with a decent FOC ( maybe 15 to 18%?) is to me way more relevant than speed. Mass & momentum. Have you tried the Magnus Black Hornet 2 blade? Have you tried increasing your draw weight by adding a halfturn on the limb bolts and shooting that like 5-10 times a day for a week or so? Do it enough as to where it feels comfortable and you are in control. Then add another turn and repeat. Literally, in 4-6 weeks you could possibly add some serious draw weight and maybe get into the 270fps.

Very cool video. I have a cheap chronograph at home and tested my speed. My Xpedite, which is PSEs speed bow, has an ATA rating of 352 fps, with loop and peep tied in I get 345fps with my 345 grain arrows. With my 666 grain arrows I still get 273fps. Bow is set to 80# with 30" draw. Your speed is actually pretty good considering your "low" poundage. Just think about what you wanna be hit with: a 30fps Pinpong ball or a 3fps bowling ball. Kinetic energy is not everything, but as usual, the goal is the middle between speed and weight.

I'm shooting 52# at 25" draw, a 500 grain arrow with about 19% FOC. I get about 200 fps. With a 360 grain arrow, I'm still only getting 230 fps. So I'll take the slower speed for a heavier arrow with more penetration any day. It just means closer shots are necessary, and isn't that what is cool about bowhunting anyway, getting in close?

Allie, thanks to you and Nick for the great videos you do. I wish they had to use a 28" draw length and provide the minimum and maximum FPS speed for the adjustable strength the bow using a 400 gr arrow. That would end a lot of the guessing and speculation. I was surprised that your bow lost so much energy from 70lbs down to 52lbs 315-ish down to 240-260ish. I would have expected you to be up around 280fps. I shoot an old Matthew FX at 62lbs and have a near 28" draw length and get in the near 280 out of a 388-400gr arrow. You all keep it going strong and are you going to ETAR here in PA this year?

Forgot two more things that affect arrow speed, percent let off and brace height. Bear LS6 was rated at 355 FPS at 70 pounds. It was able to achieve those speeds because of its low let off of only 70% and short brace height of 5 inches. High arrow speed always comes at a price, and it’s usually at the cost of shoot ability and smoothness.

I got the VXR and it’s ridiculous quiet with my light target arrow. My hunting arrow is a 300 spine 4fletch gold tip hunter pro with a 100 grain brass insert and 125 grain point, and it’s also more civilized in the sound department. Thank you Mathews for the engineering work of art

@@christophergolla775 I just built a dozen 6.5 matrix match grade 250 spine with Ethics stainless 100 gr inserts and 125 tip. I can probably step up higher in weight by 50 grains if I wanted, but I’m getting near perfect arrow flight where I’m at. I estimate somewhere in the neighborhood of 525 grains total. I may add a footer on the outside for durability insurance and with a IronWill I should be able to pound that arrow through anything including shoulder on a quartering in shot. I did some testing this weekend on my 3d target and that arrow blew through the target and through the hay bales behind it and lost the arrow. Meaning it penetrated into the earth and I’ll prob never find it. I need a tougher 3D target

ok, but which arrow penatrated deeper? I would guess the heavier slower arrow. Dont even think pulling 50 lbs is a disadvantage, many top bow hunters like Dwight Schuh and Ted Nugent use bow in the 50 lbs range. I just shake my head as the Macho meter keeps going up. First 60lbs was the norm, then 70lbs and now i see many buying bows in the 80lbs range.

heavier weight arrows with heavier fixed blades do alot more damage then a faster lighter arrow setup think of it as if u got hit with a golfball moving the same speed as getting hit with a ping pong ball the heavier one has alot more momentum. Great video though i enjoyed it for sure c: im bout to go hit some public land here in iowa wish me luck.

Hi allie, this is Wayne from Indiana, I'm gonna give you a little extra history, from and foremost, from the manufacturers original designations, the IBO did come out with the IBO speed, ,and yeah, then the ATA SHOW, came out with their own research, I don't know when the word term was dropped, but the original arrow speed was, "" classified as,,,,AMO,- this stands for, ARCHERY MANUFACTURERS ORGANIZATION, the AMO, there was a guy who, I believe he live in Wisconsin, his name is NORB MULANEY, I think he's passed away, I think he had a degree in engineering, the bow companies """ , would send him their bows for his research judgement, he documented everything about the compound bow, the older models bows ,that had low roll over let-off, were infact kinda hard to hold, then in the possible mid 90s, the let-off cams were getting redesigned, all the companies were doing it, it was referred to as, "" hysterisis , it starts off light, then the rollover hits and explodes, I know your younger than I am, but I am just letting you know a little extra history, but I am glad that you have begun to start using your own bow press, the more mechanics you learn you will get better, but we need to get the word out, there are way too many archery wannabes lazy idiot's out there that talk big and can't back it up, I'd like to hear from you, I do have a lot of archery to talk about, wayneeden95@gmail.com

Speed doesn't kill. Trad bow hunters are shooting a lot less than 250 fps with 550+ grain arrows and getting a clean pass through on elk sized game. You'll never Beat a deer sound travels faster than your arrow a quiet bow with an adult arrow kills

I would recommend using a cut on contact fixed blade broadhead with your setup.
@mattsoutdoors7757
@mattsoutdoors7757 3 года назад
Yes use cut on contact blades. But with that you need to add a inch to your short arrows so the blades don't hit your riser. I use slick tricks now and with a tuned bow and tuned bare shaft arrows they fly exactly like my feild points. But you also have to have the foc also so they fly right. I shoot a 480grn arrow 50grn insert and 100 grn tips 30" draw and 70#. My bow is rated at 350 fps. And with my set up I shoot 308fps.
