For me, Helen still has a big role to play in our country politics. Her level of understanding, her intelligence, she's really a freedom fighter. I would prefer her as president of the country amongst the women we have.

so good to come across this again after about 5 years. again, this is about the only place i find proper discussion about our condition. on content, i hear helen as being from the ‘english political’ tradition which, as i understand it, is bottom-up empirical method of policy generation compared with top-down ideological methods. and i don’t think colour is colour, it’s representation of culture.

Great interview Sizwe. You always remain impartial and professional with your guests, while still bringing your point of view across (a skill that I think a lot of journalists battle with). I feel that the topic around race still needs to be had for centuries to come. This idea that people who were previously oppressed (and in some cases still are being oppressed) need to just forget about it, stop playing 'victim' and move on is not the solution. Racial oppression and racial tension is still rife, not just in this nation but across the globe. The conversations around it are far from over and people need to accept that and not get disheartened or annoyed by it.

Totally agree.racism is going to be around for many years to come. Part of human qualities is to discriminate if its not race its going to be something else like religion. How you deal with this is to respect each other for being different.

When are we as a national going to start building a highway for progressive seeking ventures? Because some tools or instruments have a given life span to can provide effective and efficient results or outcomes i.e a screwdriver has now been replaced by a cordless handheld device and that doesn't mean we dont appriciate the work that a screwdriver has done of the years..."BBEE" Mama Ziller has won back my heart she is very comprehensive and insightful in her responses that's putting black patriotism aside but rather objectivism

Helen makes a compelling case for non racialism, especially when she also acknowledges the need for sympathy and empathy. It's quite a gamble however to believe that other whites and particularly in the DA believe as strongly as she does. I'm watching this video just as racial tensions break out post the looting and burning of malls in KZN. In a time where people coil back into their racial ethnicities to protect property and family ideals like non racialism seem not to stand.

So having treated all those with darker skins as ‘lesser’ regardless of who and what each & every single one of them was: is to be continued {by those who exploit that easily divisive yet entirely un-chosen colour of one’s skin} by enabling a politically selected group, from amongst all those with dark skins, as empowered & affirmed by the mere colour of their skin regardless of who and what each & every single one of them is… So the darker skinned subjective individual whose meaning was obliterated by the discriminatory race identity system of Apartheid now continues to be so obliterated by the race identity policies of the ANC/EFF: such that a privileged by Affirmative Action ‘black’ individual is treated as if as disadvantaged as Sihle who still earns R 3500/month mowing suburban lawns. BEE is not the end of Apartheid; rather it is the continuation of the race manipulating Apartheid system that reduces each & every single child born with a darker skin to nothing but its designated race & if that child’s specific individuality & life story is rendered meaningless by this process so is any hope of that child developing accountability for & hope towards the realization of its unique & rightful self. This is what Malcolm X came to understand {for it applies to each & every single one of us born to the history & future of the human species} and this is why he was murdered: because he was truly sincere in his endeavour to free the ‘black’ child from being either discriminated against or Affirmed as merely black so that they could finally be understood & treated as integrally a child of us all!

When dealing with what is wrong with SA, ZIlle is always ready to speak of the very poor black majority, the black middle class and the very wealthy politically connected black elites and goes to the extent of pulling out files of all corruption (real and alleged), even throws black political parties in the mix, she has Jacob Zuma's name on the tip of her tongue alongside VBS, EFF, BBBEE and other black abbreviations! But when she speaks of white people, it is about defending the good aspects of colonialism with no mention of corruption/collusion, no mention of racism, no white political parties, individuals or NGOs are ever mentioned in a negative manner. Now why is that?

@ChildOfTheUniverse3
@ChildOfTheUniverse3 3 года назад
Hi Sizwe. I appreciate your content. You always have really good points and make a lot of valid points. But in this case I think you made a mistake. You let your emotions influence your arguments that you could have taken the discourse into. For example, though I think she knows what you are saying is true, and you did well to mention it, with respects to appealing more to her base (white people). Your follow ups could then have gone into, what the data suggests would be the best structures one can build to facilitate the narrowing of the inequality gap. Because inherent in her proposition, as she states it, would be "unnamed" racial improvements (as the poor get richer the racial divide should narrow in terms of wealth). Those ideas then stimulate new ideas not only in your discourse. As she states all these failed experiments exist, the question is why is her ideas above these ideas? However if she wants to take the apathetic route of solving the problem without looking at the emotional aspect of the live experience of racial brutality, discimination, etc. Then what would she then through the data propose be the best solution of the emotional reproach still found in racial South Africa today. Does she think that people should just get over it? Is that what the data suggests is the best way to deal with trauma and scaring? I mean I commend her bravery for being honest. To an extent I would agree this should no longer be classified a racial issue. Where I disagree is that, it is now both a racial and class distinctintion, the problem has evolved into. That is to say... there are now black South Africans, Indian South Africans, Coloured South Africans also rich (still a vast minority). Therefore do not benefit those already above water. Instead facilitate building of the raft that will take those to shore who are in the middle of oceans of deprivation, destitution and depression. I would have loved to hear about a robin hood strategy or a ownership strategies (employes own shares in the companies they work). Capitalism is also a failed experiment. It constantly fails and has to be fixed by the governments. Always because of greed. So how do you fix the market place if socialism is not the answer? Something I wish you would have done more is, push her on her very shallow take on the EFF. She really didnt produce much argument only strawmen. So please next time my man, dont be hesitant to bring the fire. Unlike on the race thing, here you didnt invest enough emotion. I appreciate your work. I find titles annoying so please take offense at me not acknowleging your achievment (im very happy for your achievement). I look up to you as, i see in you a much better articulated- and thinking being. I wont idolize you, hence i will critique you when I think you are not trying to take in their view. Instead of pandering to what you know or what you think you should be doing (challenge the white lady because she doesnt know our experience of racial discrimination). Perhaps try the Socratic method. Try to really understand what they are trying to say, so that you can see if what they say, actually makes sense.

Hellen, as long as you ignore the majority of this country who are in poverty, this country will not move on. Thinking that only corruption is a problem is just an illussion. In short, the DA failed to evolve and be truelly inclusive, so it will be a failed project, a party of white people with few Afrikans. DA in its form will never be able to attract Afrikans, as your vote depends on them. You want Afrikans on your terms, if you are brittle you cannot bend like a bambo, and as you attempts to bend, you will break. Hellen is not a suitable leader to take the DA forward. All the white DA is concerns about, is the loss of white voters not growing black voters. This implies thar your racist glasses are not yet removed. Ta Sizwe.👊🏿

She starts by talking about redress of the past and then she goes on to say that race cannot be used as a marker for redress. What past is she referring to then? This was very confusing to me. Secondly, just because the current method of redress has been hijacked by corruption doesn't mean that we can invalidate the need for redress within the context of our racial past. Okwesithathu, uthi people that are currently benefiting from BBBEE would obviously want to cling on to this benefit...well we can use the same argument that people that have benefited from the previous regime have clung to thier previlages and she doesn't want to go there because well, she doesn't believe that there's such a thing as "white privilege". I'd respect the DA a lot more if they were just honest that redress is not on thier list of priorities.

@@realdudevision2746 I think his vision and DA Policy is not the same. So they where on a collision course. Party politics is a collective agreed direction and if you don't agree you can't tag along. Mmusi wants bbee and the DA not. I really don't think its about race. Im an afrikaaner and a business owner and I really think bbee is killing business. I don't care what race a person is if its the best service and deal or best suited person that will grow the business I will take that. The extreme white thinking is really limited. Bbee is an ideal but proven not to work. I would much rather push disadvantaged to reach heights with achievements and this whole race debate will disappear. I understands Mmani frustration because it is real. There is no instant fixes but plenty of black people have shown they deserve their positions that they worked towards.
