Hellsing is definitely one of the most bizarre properties that's within the anime/manga space and as someone whose only seen Hellsing Ultimate, I always wondered if the manga was just as strange or perhaps even more. So, to answer my own curiosity, I decided to read the manga and yeah, Hellsing is weird. In this video, I go over the basics of the story and detail just how a strange and surprisingly deep this manga is.
As always, my opinion is subjective so if you disagree or have a different take, your opinion is totally justified.

I've always thought of Alucard as an extremely dense mass of shapeshifting blood with intelligence. The Van Helsing family took Dracula and made him into an indestructible weapon. But one correction, sorry. The Hound of Baskerville. The Baskervilles were a family from a Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

One thing that actually really impresses me about Hellsing. I read it back in highschool. It is actually pretty accurate to the original Dracula book in how vampires work. If you take out the virgin bit, the ghouls and the lovecraft horror powers. Hell one thing Hirano actually took note of was that in Dracula when a vampire was slain they were always depicted as at peace with their death. That their souls were saved when they were slain and even Dracula. All the characters are insanely complex when at first glance they are one note. Hell even the nice little details like the clothes they wear says a lot. The fact that Abraham Van Helsing is always seen wearing an outfit very much like Alucard's exposes a lot about Alucard's mental state. He's obsessed with the group of humans who beat him so much he is wearing Van Helsing's clothes to envoke their memory. The last thing his prey will see is the same thing he saw on that Transylvanian morning.

I also love how the Major contrasts Alucard in almost every way. Despite him not being as "human" as previously thought everything about him is almost a mockery of what Alucard stands for. While Alucard wants to die he still maintains his existence for the support of others. Major literally sacrifices everyone for a single moment. And what I find daunting is that neither Alucard nor Major hate each other, they seem to be almost playful towards each other. Despite not being allies at all, there's a sense of respect the two have for each other. I don't see that type of interaction between a protagonist and an antagonist that often if at all.

@@nono9543ctually if you take out the shoggoth eyes and his multiple lives he's actually pretty accurate to how Dracula is described in the book. He can turn into dogs, bats and mist. He can control the weather, walk about in the day in direct sunlight, control the minds of weak men and animals. Drive men mad with his power. Telepathy, teleportation, immense strength and speed. Unable to be harmed outside of being stabed in the heart, decapitation or shot with a magic bullet. Also one of the least understood powers in the book. The ability to grow in power for every victim he bites. Hirano even got right the fact he requires his coffins to house the dirt of his homeland in order to rest which not a lot of vampire stories even mention. He even grows old if he doesn't feed as seen in integra's flashback. It should also be worth mentioning that Dracula was a big inspiration to Lovecraft when making the Cthulhu mythos.

@xmoonstarx Год назад
@@jackmesrel4933 in the first volume of the manga integra mentions he's literally the fruit of years of research to turn him into the ultimate undead after getting regenerated (this is why even anderson got surprised and had to run away in their first meeting, any of the things he did to alucard would have killed any common vampire), even the creator said on an interview in the official guide that alucard was modified to be more powerful. it's even more clear when in the flashbacks he recalls being defeated by humans with normal weapons as in the book, he wasn't as powerful as he is now and he says that in that day *he fought with all of his heart*. the fact that seras has similar abilites is because alucard's blood that flows now in her undead veins is obviously already modified and she has to learn and unlock them.
@fireblast133
@fireblast133 Год назад
I think the one thing you missed is that the Vatican has the Frankenstein allegory on their side. Alexander Anderson very much fits that role of Frankenstein’s monster. A monster not intended to be a monster. One intended to be human. He wasn’t a corpse brought back to life, yeah, but he is one pushing that limit of ‘what is a man’ and is in many ways the physical perfection of the technology of mankind. Alucard still recognized him as human, and honestly, Anderson could have likely won that fight in the end, his downfall ending up being his faith making him give up his humanity, a desire to only be a force of nature that god could direct.
@kinggundragon3728
@kinggundragon3728 Год назад
The major is far closer to Frankenstein's being a dead man brought back by a mad doctor and his general desire to prove that he is a man and not a moster while being the most twisted and cruel of the monsters. Anderson felt more like the product of the author taking Vash the stampede and focusing more on the religious elements of tri gun.
@fireblast133
@fireblast133 Год назад
@@kinggundragon3728 Nah, Major still more fits the concept of a robot. Even if he's still got his mind preserved in there, he's mostly robotic. Anderson is more Frankenstein's Monster than Major. You also did an excellent job of conveying Alucard's dual nature - on the one hand, he is a brutal and ruthless fighter, while on the other hand, he is also capable of moments of compassion and empathy. Alucard is the One Punch Man before that was a thing. He cannot lose. He cannot die. He is unstoppable, nothing can defeat him. Millennium had a plan, decades in the making, using actual quantum mechanics and the sacrifice of millions of people and a thousand vampire nazis as well as a whole new crusade, it still only had a 50/50 chance of actually putting him down. And it only did for 30 years before making him even more powerful. There's nothing that can challenge him and that makes him... insanely isolated and lonely. He's very layered and you explained that depth well.
@Usernamesdontmatter1
@Usernamesdontmatter1 Год назад
I disagree with that statement. Alucard can lose and die. He almost died against Anderson until Seras snapped him out of his dazed state. He almost died against Walter but Walter messed up by letting Luke Valentine live. As far as nothing can stop him that's not true either. In Hellsing the Dawn he actively avoided the werewolf captain and abandoned Walter saying "that's not my area of expertise". Alucard was also canonically defeated by Van Helsing and the other protagonists of Dracula. Yeah Alucard is the most powerful character in Hellsing and he's pretty powerful when you stack him up against other vampires of other works of fiction but he's not Saitama levels of BS nor is he as unstoppable in his own universe. What makes him lonely and isolated is his own mentality on HOW he gained his power. He wants to be defeated by a person who truly values what life is. That's why he was furious when Anderson threw away his humanity. That's why he grew angry when the Brazilian cop killed himself. The addition of Seras who became a vampire but still retained her humanity and Integra who basically embodies every virtue he sees as valuable makes him less lonely in the end. Something he brags to Walter about before they fight.

I remember seeing Ultimate back in middle school and thinking I hallucinated the swastika in the Toonami trailer as it was relatively late. For some reason, I thought that Nazis and anime were a forbidden combo back then but sure enough, it wasn't. That's not saying I hated it though, as I genuinely enjoyed the episodes with the Nazis because it REALLY increased the violence and action, as well as had really good animation even for more minor background things. Probably the biggest shock though was that Toonami aired it, considering that Attack on Titan had already established itself as a mainstay by that point. I watched a bit of AoT, but lost interest after the whole titan shifter reveal since it just felt like a dumb twist to me. Hellsing Ultimate revived what AoT killed for me, which was a love for anime. I'm not attacking AoT fans either, it's just not as interesting to me when compared to a powerful vampire killing Nazis that are probably pissed off that they lost the war
@jackmesrel4933
@jackmesrel4933 Год назад
They're not pissed of about losing the war, they're about never really playing a part in it. The Major's unit was still being constructed when they were assaulted and had to retreat and, shortly after, the war ended, so none of them touched the battlefield. That's why they orchestraded the attack on London, to fulfill the task they were trained for, and to die wether they win or lose.

One, to imply the series can only be enjoyable that way, that tells me you ignore the deeper meaning in the series actively and that's disingenuous. It's actually about a Inheritance case where a villain uses a vicious hound painted in phosphorous to make it look demonic where someone uses it to scare and or kill his own family members so he can be the remaining heir to the families fortune. And just looking at the manga, the artwork and paneling don’t really stand out compared to other manga. Maybe I’m completely wrong, and the manga is absolutely top tier, but I would prefer to try out different series that I might like more.

I thought he wasn’t immortal, I thought he just has a lot of lives because of all the people he’s consumed so even if you killed him or destroyed him completely he can just regenerate but he can be killed if destroyed enough times 🤔

I hate Alucard, he's the worst part of the series because he's such a mary sue. The actual setting has a lot of promise but I found that it was heavily underutilized because Millenium took over the story midway through.

Why would you assume to call Alucard a Mary Sue? Because he’s nearly unkillable and wins nearly all of his fights? Why does that make him a bad character, in what he is supposed to represent and serve within the story?
@codafett
@codafett Год назад
@@fionn_mac_ribs He doesn't represent shit. He's just a power fantasy character with a hastily thrown together sad backstory. Please tell me you're smarter than that, that you don't fall for that shoehorned garbage.

I mean the whole point of alucard is that he is one of the if not THE oldest living vampire. he lived for over 500+ years, it´d be a surprise if he werent an absolute monster that could fold any self proclaimed big shot vampire like a lawnchair.

While I agree that the setting is very under utilized and really that comes down to Hirano rushing the story towards the end because he hated drawing all the military uniforms. Alucard has his flaws. He's not universally liked among the cast. He's not a be all and end all of the setting. He's just the most powerful guy in the room. People throw around the word Mary sue without actually knowing what the word means. I do argue he takes up way too much screen time from the actual main character Seras. She's the one who grows and faces challenges. The story literally opens up with her turning into a vampire and she's the one who takes down the major alongside Integra.

@@Usernamesdontmatter1Wait really? He rushed it because he hated drawing the uniforms? That's an unexpected but also funny turn of events for me

I personally prefer the ultimate version because of the improved animation with the action and the more brutal deaths

@@aaronatkinson177 You're just praising the artstyle infact the animation of the original is much better in quality the ova stagnantes after the first two episodes.

@@thomasffrench3639I think it's mainly the appeal as the animation does have a bit of nostalgia behind it. I personally like the 2001 version for that, but I admit that Ultimate is great for being faithful to the manga's story
