MY vote at the end was the NT1-A as well - I am a bit partial to condenser mics on harsh vocals! But they all sound excellent, only subtle differences really ! 🎤 Be the first to join my new vocal coaching program: voicehacks.co 🎤 💻 Learn to Scream with me - Book Lessons on Zoom here: voicehacksllc.simplybook.me 🎧 Listen to The Voicehacks Podcast: voicehackspodcast.com

Nice idea to test this way and nice from Rode to do this! :D Place one overall for me for me is the Procaster, short followed by the NT-2A. The others have for me to many weaknesses with this "kind of use" in several points to be my choice. Best regards from Germany

Any of the condensers. The response is just so much more vivid they make dynamics sound like you’re singing through a pillow. I’ve just started to use a Shure Beta 87a live after years of using my trusty Beta 58 and everything’s so much easier suddenly. The NT-1 for me was the best of these. As you say though, subtle differences, especially for harsh sounds.

Definitely the NT1-A. It picked up a lot more sound and even though it seems like the type to be sensitive (can't think of a better word to use lol), it allows it to sound more clear since it picks things up so well. But that also means that everyone can hear it when you mess up lol.

NT1-A for sure. Captures more of the highs and air which is easier to remove if needed rather than being too dark and trying to boost those areas. Set at fixed distance, pop shield, profit
@KindOldRaven

Tbh I'm surprised the condensers held up with more naturally distorted voices. I find they're rarely used for more extreme vocals, even in recording settings. But in this case I'd vote the NT1-A; as I see many others did as well.
@vincentweber1359

Really close between the NT1-A and the NT2-A, with a slight edge for the NT1-A. (But I have to admit that I might be biased towards this mic because that's the one I use.)
@wookie606

Just remember what pre-amp and processing you use can really make a mic shine. SM7 (The standard for harsh vocals) needs lot of love to get it to the stage where it sounds godly.

@wookie606

@@Xbuster6 what mic are you using and what do you want sound wise?
@Xbuster6
@Xbuster6 4 года назад
@@wookie606 I am getting new mics, probably a few seen in this video. Mainly condensers and some dynamics too. In short, I am looking for good-studio-sounding-quality and would like to know what preamps and audio interface brands/models are best. As far as audio interfaces, and preamps, I am looking to record both vocals and percussion(drums) at home. I plan to get an audio interface that can thus handle atleast 10 microphones, so that I can mic my drumkit with multiple microphones. To my understanding, this produces a better sound for the drum recording. But I am wondering what Audio Interfaces, and preamps work best for this, and for vocals as well.
@wookie606
@wookie606 4 года назад
The Audient interfaces are really nice for just capturing mics cleanly. Some of the Art stuff is good too. Just make sure you get something clean which has phantom power if you want a condenser.

Possibly I was having a little trouble adjusting the gain between the two because M1 is dynamic and M2 is a condenser so it is way hotter for sure

Now that was an original and interesting test 😁👍 my pick: for studio NT2-a, has an insane amount of detail (even more so than the the NT1-a) while still maintaining the low frequency body. Wow, truely impressive! But for live, the M2 has an redicuolus amount of detail and clarity, almost on par with studio mics, while having superior handling and easy access to proximity effects (since being handheld), as well as having surprisingly good build in pop/plosive rejection. If there is a need for a mic that could possibly handle both use cases, Procaster might be a really good in between🤷‍♂️. For me, recording with the NT2-a, would be a dream. But I really like the M2 as a very close 2nd. I do find the test (part 2, high fry open) does favour mics without pop filter, as the closer distance makes for some nice proximity fullness. On the other hand the low folds open test favours mics with popfilters, as the exessive airflow completly over powers any internal air blocks. Anyway, thanks for a really cool test! 😎👍

It's hard to say. First time I heard the NT2-A I thought that was the winner for sure, but it sounds like it handles fry screams better than false chord screams. Maybe that's just my imagination. When it comes to false chord, I think the M2 handled it the best.

all the nt ones are good but the 2 seems to have a bit more lows which makes the screams sound a bit beefier to me. dont know if that means it adds something extra that isnt in the actual scream or if it is just a bit more accurate. so if those added lows are accurate than my vote is for the nt2-a. if they are added by the microphone id say the nt1-a is the best

This wasn't a fair test. The Procaster, M1 and Podmic don't handle plosives well, and you didn't use a pop filter or wind sock with them, but the others had them. I think the Procaster may stand up well against the NT2A with one. Especially given its a competitor for the SM7B. NT1A has a hyped high freq that I dispise. M1 has poor handling noise. The Podmic may also need a gentle low end boost for it to compete, but it might even do that if it had some gentle processing.

NT-1 and NT-2A are my faves. NT-2A being more full. If you want a more mobile mic, the M2 was great, just a bit too round on the low end at times. NT-1A was decent but it's got a cheaper, hollow, harsher sound. I've never been a fan of that mic, especially on female vocals. Their updated NT-1 (black model) sounds so much better!

I personally like the NT2-A the best. The NT1-A was pretty good, but I thought the NT2-A sounded the most rounded. As far as I heard, the NT1-A had a little bit more upper highs out of all of them, but I thought it wasn't quite as full sounding as the NT2-A. I imagined it'd be easier to mix something coming from the NT2-A than the NT1-A. Like you mentioned in the comment though, it's a subtle difference. Nice screams!
