Here’s the solution: she needs to get a paying job and buy her ex out of the house she lives in. Get it all in writing through a lawyer. Live her life separate. Simple but probably hard for her.

She’s calling cause she knows, she just won’t admit it to herself. No income, no work history, no social security...she can’t even buy a car on her own. No retirement. She needs to think about her future. She has poor boundaries with her ex.

Generally when you call your husband your ex-husband, it means that you went through a full divorce and the judge split up everything including any houses and businesses. I don't get this at all.

That's true the situation they are in would be if they are still married because she can lose everything within seconds. If the marriage didn't go well the financials won't to. Its good to be upfront, separation is necessary.

Sounds like when my Dad had gotten rid of a toxic friend that he bought out in 2009 and me helping my Dad getting his business going again. He was not able to pay me for a couple years. I was helping during the day when I already had a night job.

Oh my goodness, what a conundrum. It's his business, and he has all the money. She is a free service, paying all the Bill's as a bookkeeper. She gets nothing out of that business relationship, and she doesn't see that? She needs either to get paid, or move on go somewhere else. I'm assuming she already has a full time job. If there are mistakes with the books, can she be held liable?

This is totally weird. You don't divorce, but keep working for free, own houses together, etc. She has absolutely no clue.

Dave is 200% right! I was in business with my husband who had an affair with our secretary and paid me $1200 a month for a job that should have paid $200k a year. I stupidly stayed in the situation for 8, count ‘em, EIGHT YEARS! And I trusted this guy who was having and affair right under my nose with an employee WHO WORKED FOR ME AND WHO I PAID! (There’s more.) I finally got out of the mess but by then I was a basket case and fell into a debilitating depression... couldn’t work, got nothing from him. If that girl is smart, she’ll cut her losses IMMEDIATELY and move far far away.

If you don't want to be married to him then why would you want to be in business with him? She's so ridiculously dependent on this man and he obviously takes advantage of her vulnerability and naivety.

My wife is a divorce lawyer and she has told me stories of how incredibly messy it gets when couples work together because even though David is correct the husband owns the business and she is "technically" just en employee because she has supported him and helped him build the business she could be entitled to a % of of the business in the divorse.

I get where she's coming from. I ran a business like that before. She's pretty much getting her bills paid by the business and the rest goes to him and business bills. Dave is right, she needs to be getting a weekly check and they both just have to pay their own bills. She pays her house and bills and he pays the business bills and his own home bill.

She still in love with him....he can sell the business and she gets nothing, not even wages because she choose to work unpaid... When she sells the house he will get $$ since they still own it BOTH... What lawyers did they use? So I can avoid them THIS should have been addressed during the divorce & not for Dave Ramsey smh

A common theme with a lot of Dave's callers is simply neglecting to understand that there are consequences for actions. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. You can't get divorced and still act like you aren't. Nothing too complicated about it, but folks seem to be in a state of denial.

If the caller is reading comments on this... PLEASE listen to Dave! This situation is super scary for you. He owns the business and half-owns the house and wants to pay off his brother's house off and not "yours" - which means he prioritizes himself more.

This is how divorces go from a normal divorce to a huge legal nasty divorce.. If it's working for them then it works... But now she got this in her ear and will go get this messy mess

also: in a well working biz he wants to pay her a salary he can deduct that before taxes. Sure they file taxes together as a couple (Or do they if they do not have joined finances ?) - but I think he still might do better to have the salary of the wife as tax deductible amount. - either he did not make enough OR he made lots under the table so he made hardly any official profit. so there was no salary needed tohave higher costs, and if they filed taxes as couple she had no income. he wants to buy the home from the brother hmmm - I start to think not a solvent family overall (brother might of course have a good reason for wanting to sell). I they both agree that he OWES her to continue to pay off of the house (for her free services in the PAST) they could make a contract where he agrees to do that. Problem is if he doesn't pay. She would be in a much better position if they SELL the house then they get rid of that mortgage and she gets more of the equity (if there is any !) - since he promised to help her later ! with paying down the mortgage they must both feel she desevers that. Well - it somehow does not sound as if there is a plenty of money. Add a new woman to the mix and he might easily withdraw from the promise. Or even a written contract. If he gives up on the official business and has not yet paid down a house, she cannot even sue him for payment. he just works under the table, but there is no forclosure possible if the bank more or less owns the new house he lives in. And no income either.

He can offer her his share of the house she lives in at good conditions. (to compensate her for her unpaid work in his biz). She says she provides the money. Sounds like she is the one that has _some_ money. And yes people that are not emotionally attached anymore can do shady stuff that may be untypical. When he is desperate and his biz is not doing well he throw all ethical considerations out of the window. people plunder the accounts of their children (that trust them and let them have access). People open credit cards in the name of their little children. if he denies her compensation for her work in the company - he is not doing any illegal. (opening a CC in anybodys name is a felony but it get's extra shady to do it to a child - and then miss out on the payments to round it all off).

If I was the wife I would say pay me first is common sense. Also once she started talking I could tell she is being manipulated a bit by the husband's plan. Very toxic relationship, she needs to get paid as an employee and go from there.

Why wasn't this settled in the divorce agreement? Some attorneys need to lose their licenses here, lol. This should have all been taken care of by the attorneys for both sides in the divorce before the final judgment was signed. "Never heard of an owner that doesn't get paid." Anthony has obviously never heard of a start up or the restaurant industry.

The ex wants Lisa to help pay off the house that the ex and the ex's brother live in FIRST then the ex will help Lisa pay off the house that she lives in. I wasn't born yesterday apparently Lisa was.

She calls him ex not ex-husband. Dave assumes automatically they were married, says you are not married anymore (she does not correct him, it may be they never were to begin with). Maybe she did not want to mention it and it may not matter legally as she likely would not get aliimony: If he is her ex _husband_ (in the legal sense !) was there ever a lawyer involved or a judge ?
