Hemenway Boat Launch - Lake Mead Historic Low Water levels have only one boat launch left on the entire Lake Mead. Big boats now have to use cranes that cost thousands of dollars to launch into the Lake. Historic Low levels since 1937 have occurred. Also, check out the NASA Photos from this week of how much Lake Mead has drained away.

what they need for large boats is to unhook a trailer from the vehicle (couldn't easily with that one though) and have the trailer on a winch anchored to the ground and just winch the trailer as far as you need down in to the lake for the boat to float.

It sure is crazy to be putting a boat IN the lake under these conditions, more like it's time to do the last ever HAUL OUT! As tough as the boat insurers are these days, I am surprised that all the companies are not telling boat owners that they should be pulling out the boat if they want coverage to continue. That will probably soon be coming.

Lake Mead dropped almost two inches in the past two days. Accelerating. Due to drought, much much less coming down from Glenn Canyon Dam at Lake Powell, Colorado River downstream uses, and the V shape of the lake. Very sad. Very surprised at the huge boat being able to actually crane to launch. Soon that will be how the remaining big boats get taken out of the water, I bet.

Hey Russ, thanks for the continuing reportage on the lake situation. The marina owners are awfully optimistic to be spending so much money to keep extending those docks out into the water. And those fish you saw(carp, I think)...there used to be a LOT more of them in big schools swimming around the docks looking for handouts. You didn't mention what part of Utah you're headed for, but if you haven't been I highly recommend US 191 between Helper and Duchesne and/or 9 Mile Canyon just south of Price that has tons of petroglyphs.

Water level is amazing enough. More amazing is the number of residences being built in Southern California. Construction of those homes alone requires massive amounts of water from grading through concrete structures and then the home owners. Not to include green spaces and swimming pools. Just a reminder that everything you see that is green and growing is not native and all plants and trees are imports. California use to be grassland and semi arid and semi desert with an average rainfall of 7 to 8 inches per year. Since Hoover Dam and the L.A. aqueduct both of the early part of the 1900's has created this Eureka of California. The drive for gold of 1849 is only superseded for the drive for water of this century. High water tables and and very shallow wells was the key element of the early 1900's until the 1980's. Water depletion and deeper wells along with the drought is truly a triple threat to the Southwest. Great video.
