This and the .357 revolver you already have does offer an Excellent alternative to a PCC like the Ruger PC9 and your semi-auto 9mm of choice. In states other than CA, magazine capacity might make the semis more attractive, but between the mag restrictions here, the ability to choose .38 or .357, and the reliability of a lever carbine along with your wheel gun, well, this does change up the tactical playground, I think...

Thats exactly what iam thinking
@theprfesssor
@theprfesssor 4 года назад
Also the power increase 357 is far more powerful then 9mm even 9mm +p quite a bit behind especially in a rifle which adds a large amount of velocity you can reliably take deer sized game with the 357 I wouldn't do so with 9mm

I have both a PCC 9mm & Henry X in .357Mag and never really liked the idea or design of Lever Action. It never appealed to me until one day, not too long ago, I realized that a Lever is as close to a Bolt Action as I'm going to get and still be able to rapid-fire a goodly number of rounds, similar to Semi-auto. - Kind of the perfect blend of Bolt & Semi-auto.

I like the features Henry has incorporated in their X Models. And, pistol caliber carbines make good sense for me. I have a service-connected disability which has caused me bad arthritis in my right shoulder. As I age, it has become difficult for me to enjoy range time. The reduced recoil afforded by a pistol caliber will allow me to indulge in more target practice, as well as hunting opportunities. I am going to opt for the .45 caliber version.

Nice review thanks. I'm right there with you in as far as I've been waiting for Henry to offer a side gate option in .357/38, I'm not a big fan of the large loop lever and I prefer levers in the more traditional wood grain over "Tacti-Cool" Black. This rifle looks to be a minimalist as far as tacticool goes and in 357 with a 17(?) inch barrel, like goldi-locks stuff it's just right.

I placed a deposit on one today! Love the flexibility of the design and ammo compatibility with my .357 revolvers. Kudos to Henry for thinking outside the box on the features and especially for finally adding the side gate which makes tactical reloads much easier. As someone who lives in an anti gun state, it is an excellent option for self defense and one that is generally off the anti's radar. I also love the absence of a gawd awful tang safety. I have everything I need to be safe with proper training, practice and the grey matter between my ears.

I've been a Henry fan boy for years, starting with the Big Boy 357. Out was stolen and I just got the Big Boy X 357 magnum. Put a nice red dot optic on it and it's now perfect. What I found troubling is that I was getting FTF errors until about 200 rounds went through the rifle. Added a sling. I now have a rifle to match my Chiappa Rhino (357).

A .357 carbine has been on my short list for years, had been hoping to find an OLD Marlin (pre-safety). These look good now with the side gate loading, glad to hear the finish was not trashed, just brass/lead transfer onto the gun from the rounds. But what about the 800 pound gorilla in the room? That was a total failure to eject on the last shot fired in the vid, at 10:37. How hard was it to clear the case? Action is stopped at this point, possibly both directions.
@Idaho278
@Idaho278 4 года назад
I was wondering the same thing. I own one of these Model X rifles in .45-70 for Alaskan grizzly defense, never had extraction issues - even with hot loads. I have however accidentally knocked an ejected casing back into the receiver, and despite smashing it with the action I was able to quickly extract it by hand without further issue. I also own a Henry Big Boy in .44, which will not extract certain CCI ammo - it's usually pretty easy to clear though.

@@Future-Preps35 I had a pretty bad experience with the Marlin. The buttstock was fitted very loosely and required extensive shimming. The rear sight broke off after the first range trip, inside a padded rifle case. The set screws in the receiver had been blued over after they were installed, and not even the warranty center could get them out. They offered me a new rifle or store credit. I took the credit. No, I have to say Marlins are not even on my list anymore.

I'm waiting for Henry to take their side gate loading to the .327 Federal Magnum caliber. A few years before Henry released the Big Boy in .327, I'd gotten a Marlin 1894 CB in .32 H&R Magnum custom worked on and converted to .327 Federal Magnum. While I enjoy that rifle and it's had a lot of time and money sank into it, if I'd known Henry was releasing the Big Boy a few years down the road I would have saved a lot of money and got it instead even though I much prefer a side gate loading. This would be a good substitute and I could either sell that Marlin or keep it as an heirloom. The X Models is something I've been wanting to see in modern lever actions for a while now.

DO NOT BUY A MARLIN. Just bought a 1895sbl. Brand new 2019 model. The carrier/lifter prematurely drops causing cases to jam on top of the chamber. Canted front sites facing 1, ejector issues, a ton of play in the lever. I had to strip the gun down and deburr/ polish the lever, carrier/lifter, purchased a new ejector because the factory one snapped somehow. Fit and finish of wood to metal parts are absolutely terrible. The receiver behind the loading gate was so sharp I sliced my finger and it cuts all the brass I put through it. I will say after stripping the entire gun, deburr/ polish everything it performs like a hot knife through butter. Marlin offers the same rifle for $2000 that's completely stripped and polished to run smooth. I spent $1,100 on a rifle I had to disassemble and fix myself. I WILL NEVER BUY A MARLIN RIFLE AGAIN

To be fair, while I like fiber optic sights I'd prefer them to all be one color. When trying to shoot in a hurry, trying to find the red in the middle of the green or vice versa can be a bit difficult. When its all red or all green, when you raise up and see a solid line, it's usually on. Still, that's a minor gripe and I'm used to most fiber optic sights being dual color.

People are beginning to wake up to the power and wide usefulness of the .357 out of a carbine or rifle. Most of the factory..357s today are loaded way down from the original loads developed by Winchester in the ‘30’s. Those had large pistol primers and with 158 grain bullets delivered 1515 FPS with 812 FPE from an S&W with an 8 3/4” barrel and were used by Major Wesson to take elk, moose, and Grizzly at 100 yards with one shot. Nobody talks about this today but double the barrel length and develop a hot load with slow powder and imagine the results! And the 38 Special handload out of a long gun will approximate .44 Magnum muzzle energies! What about that? JWC These stats on the .357 are from Jim Taylor at www.leverguns.com. Note: the .38 special loads are my +p loads with H110 and are also suitable for strong pistols. From my Civil War conversion that bullet delivers more than 400 FPE! Interesting, eh? “Less is more.”
