Here’s Why A Gluten-Free Diet Can Become Incredibly Unhealthy

Unless you’ve lived under a rock these past few years, you know “gluten-free” has become a major buzz term. Restaurants proudly offer options like gluten-free bread, and even mainstream supermarkets have whole aisles dedicated to the trend. Nearly everyone has jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon.
I don’t recommend just anyone jumping on it - not at least until you understand a few facts … and here’s why.

My experience going gluten free for the last several weeks has been very positive. Better mood, more energy, clearer thinking, dandruff almost gone, athletes foot nearly gone, less psoriasis and eczema, skin looking better overall, slimming down. Did this at the same time that I drastically cut my sugar intake and removed dairy from my diet, so I don't know how much credit to give gluten free, but I do believe it has helped. Thanks for the video, Dr. Hyman!

Well: 1) If you go to the supermarket, most of the fresh fruits and vegetables still have a bar code, so that’s dumb. Even if you go up to the fish counter, when the butcher puts your fish into some paper, after he weighs it, he’s gonna slap a bar code onto the wrapper. 2) More than likely most of the fresh fruits and vegetables that don’t say “organic” could have pesticides on them.

Ive been a nurse for over 10 yrs and I really embraced Holistic health and nutrition because I just couldnt take big pharma any longer. I wanted to see people getting better, healthier and happier. I was discouraged by what I witnessed as physicians pushed more meds and there was not a focus on nutrition, health, wellness.....!!! Thank you for all you do😙

Yes!!! I have celiac disease and people often tell me, "oh, being a celiac nowadays is easy because you now have gluten free aisles at the grocery store!" I cringe when I hear these comments because I know that 99% of the products are horrific for my health. I used to simply look at ingredients list and say that if it had 3 or less ingredients in the processed gluten free and organic food that I was ok to ingest it. That's how I justified drinking Zevia cola and Siete grain free tortilla chips. I ate them all of the time because I felt like I had been so deprived from eating fun foods. However, my skin was horrific, I felt absolutely depressed and anxiety-ridden. Those things did not have any nutritional value in them. They didn't serve my body which had already been inflamed for so long. I'm sure eating them every once in a while isn't going to kill you, but why would you eat something that will make you feel worse? I also found a non-gmo bakery that actually has an AMAZING tasting coconut cookies and pumpkin pie that is grainless, sugar free, dairy free and gluten free. I thought it was too good to be true! And I ate them every weekend to treat myself after a long week at work. They were definitely delicious but again, zero nutritional value. I simply used the "grainless, gluten free, non gmo, non dairy, and sugar free" label to justify eating them. Although there were no artificial sweeteners or processed sugar in them, they had other things "natural" to sweeten them with like erythritol and stevia. My stomach always felt a little off after eating them. I didn't get sick. I was able to digest them but I knew that my microbiome had been affected. Dr. Hyman is 100% correct. Stay away from gluten-free food aisle and eat whole foods. It's hard. I'm not going to lie. Especially during the holidays and on special occasions like birthday parties but you aren't going to heal if you give into the food industry's lies.

I have really enjoyed going Gluten free, soy free, sugar free & dairy free. I have Hypothyroidism & watched you in the Thyroid Secret. I feel much better, have lost around 10 lbs., stopped seeing my western doc and am now seeing a naturopath (who's into the whole body vs. just my symptoms). What a difference. Thanks for the tips on the EWG's site. I do find it hard to buy natural foods because of the craze, it's not easy to find in my area & the prices aren't exactly small. If it doesn't rot or sprout, throw it out! Thankfully I never got into processed products. All my food comes from the outside of the supermarket. What you eat is really the only thing you have total control of in this world. It has to be your number one priority. It has to come before everything else.

I could listen to your videos all day long! They are so educational and easy to follow. I started going gluten free when I started with the IIN program. And soon realized that gluten free means whole foods only, no industrial labeld gluten-free products. It took me weeks to adjust to these changes. Sometimes I have products that contain gluten but very rarely as an exception and it works fine. I barely eat any industrial food anymore. I really notice the difference now that I have gotten to know both sides.

Thank you for this. I have gluten intolerance and was told to go gluten free. I now also have internal candida from the sugar additions. Working full time pushed me to purchase too much off the shelf products. Now I do as much from scratch and plan ahead more than I ever did as you can find hardly anything healthy out or on the shelves, including restaurants and pub food. Time for the industry to change. Funny how my experience has been totally different I thought gluten was the cause of my seasonal allergies, so I tried going gluten free and dairy free but allergies were just as bad or worst so I decided instead to focus on my gut health and digestive system health, by eating probiotic foods, prebiotic foods and enzymes like papaya and pineapple, I also bought the Sonic 2.0 water flosser and toothbrush and used it daily once in the morning and before going to bed, my gums stopped bleeding and my teeth feel healthier, my allergies went away it was a miracle and I found out I'm not gluten intolerant or lactose intolerant, my problem was unhealthy gut and digestive system and of course I cut down significantly on sugar and enriched flours, I still eat bread like the whole grain Dave's killer bread loaded with prebiotic fiber I drink a glass of whole milk I'm feeling great feel so much healthier, I knew something was not right when people demonize wheat and dairy, God knows best he made my body both dairy and wheat are healthy and so are eggs lol. The problem is that this foods are processed differently now and are not healthy like back in the old days, that's why we have to read the labels and only get the organic brands that only contain healthy ingredients.

Hi Mark, I love your channel. I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos. When I realised my doctor just wanted to write a prescription and get me out of her office; I left her practice , found a nutritionist, and started actively working to bring my thyroid antibodies down on my own. I am eating gluten-free/whole foods with the exception of 1 coffee/day and some occasional sugar-free peanut butter. I eat almost no sugar and dairy. I have been doing this for 6 weeks. I have lost 9 kilograms. I have my energy back. I found a new doctor and he seems to be identical to the first one. Almost a waste of time changing doctors. This one told me that selenium does absolutely nothing and that there is no need to take vitamin D (despite my blood tests showing deficiency....) My thyroid medicine is levothyroxine and I am only on a 50mg dose.

The biggest thing I learned about having to eat glutenfree, is to just cook everything from scratch. Until I had to start reading ingredients in food in the shops, I didn't know how much junk there is in food. I also can't eat soja, tomatoes, potatoes, cacao, peper . I went on AIP diet to find out and now I feel so much better.

Wheat, dairy, AND processed is a huge key. Replacing the bad foods with the right BALANCE of whole foods minimally processed is also key. Also finding JOY in healthy home cooking AND eating. Otherwise wheat, dairy, and refined foods will sneak back in. Lean chicken, fish, whole grain rices, whole oats, fruits, greens, and a lot of different spices helped me kick the wheat. Vegan alternative dairy, almond milk, and so much of what is found in health food stores is just GARBAGE. I saw a very overweight lady in a health food store loading a cart full of gluten free cookies, and other junk. So sad! If it is processed and packaged, avoid it. Stick to refrigerated sections where there are fresh fruits, veggies, and lean meats. Avoid the middle areas of the stores except for bulk unrefined products. Eat your fruits, juice your raw dark greens, eat cooked veggies with lean meat and whole minimally processed carbs. Learn how to upgrade food choices in any situation! If you must eat out then this is very important. No need to make a scene. Order a salad with olive oil and vinegar topped with chicken breast. Baked potato hold the butter and sour cream. Top sirloin instead of ribeye. Brown instead of white rice. Water with lemon/lime instead of soda. Oatmeal instead of wheat. Fresh is best. Whole not refined. Sliced and diced not powdered. Blood sugar will be in check and your type 2 diabetes will fade away.

What about gluten-free from the health food sections that don't use bad ingredients or bad oils? I read labels like a hawk and make sure the sugar content is very low or zero! What about baking our own cookies with gluten free flour by Bob's Red Mill and stevia or raw honey which has important healing enzymes. I've gone gluten-free, dairy free and sugar free and I've finally lost weight along with intermittent fasting and my stomach is flatter...working on killing those bugs that led to my MS ..thankfully, I have a mild form and only use a cane. It was in remission for over 20 years and only got a bit worst in my late 60s. I eat only organic for the most part and focus on fresh produce, fish, organic eggs, nuts, healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil and avocadoes and a small amount of fruit and don't drink sodas anymore, only water and herbal teas. Thanks for sharing important tips~

Not saying you did, but when I first went plant based I was eating like a pure lunatic, the is a smart and healthy way to go vegan which is where I'm at now, and the benefits are huge. I cured my constipation that would result in painful and bloody hemorrhoids. My mother in law completely cured her diabetes. I'd say revise and try again. Because doctors are trained by schools that teach drug therapy. They'd actually have to do their own research to learn any other way, but since they are too narcissistic, they think they already know "everything". Hannah Wilder ... doctors in America are not taught anything about the natural all Americans need to know that if a medical doctor it speaks about the natural it doesn't mean that they're talented in the field natural or natural supplements or natural healing some of them obviously go outside of their field and learn about the natural but the way this particular man is explaining it is not helpful to the average person especially in the first 3 minutes of the video he's not getting to the point and he's playing a game I don't think that's smart with the American people because most people are not going understand his little process and they're going to think that all gluten free products are bad especially if they only watch the first three minutes

Qualifying as a doctor long, complex, expense and extremely competitive. And once qualified doctors spend their initial years paying of the debt and that means career focus. Narcissistic has nothing to do with this. Some doctors are good and some are bad.

This issue of open vs. closed mindedness could better referred to as busy-person's syndrome. If you are a busy person, inundated by people in need, your unconscious mind tends to convince itself (and your conscious mind) to protect what you have as well as shield you from new information or counter beliefs. If you are this person, what do you have? You have limited time. With limited time, it's easy to defer to the knowledge provided by the agencies who control your profession. It's also a mindset and practice that helps when you face liability issues. I know a physician who once claimed to read 4 studies per day. I asked him, "Is that getting you where you want to be?" "Not really," he responded. "What do you do for your knowledge?" I told him that I spend time each day, balancing mind, body, and spirit. I shared that I read a ton, watch the latest health videos from sources that seem well-intentioned, and I think a lot. I also test my assertions in friendly conversation and heated debate. I also publish my observations in writing and in video. See my RU-vid channel. The stance I have adopted falls under the heading of mindfulness and being a fair intellectual. I encourage you all to spend time in the pursuit of mastering mindfulness and self. Sifu Slim, author, speaker, coach SifuSlim.com

Hi Dr. Hyman. I know you shun flour as a healthy part of a diet, and I am mostly on board, with several exceptions. On a separate note, Question about a specific bread found in the freezer: "Ezeekial Live Sprouted Bread", no flour, I think its completely seed based, whole grain, but... If I'm going to be skeptical about every non-homemade product, I guess I need to call it into question too. It was here long before the gluten free craze began and I don't think their marketing package has even changed. However, What truth that is most relevant to my health does their packaging tell me and is it a food worth incorporating into my diet? Grateful for a professional perspective! Jessica Morgan MD

I ate one of the Ezeekial sprouted bread and I felt so sick. I was trying to figure out why. When I went back to check it was made with sprouted soy beans. I can eat whole soybeans but not the soy milk and I guess not in high concentrations in bread form. When my daughter was a baby I tried supplementing my breastfeeding with soy formula after starting her on milk based formula. She completely clogged up on the soy formula.

Dr. Michael Greger disagrees with you about gluten (and he's just one doctor of many who does): "Gluten, itself, may also boost immune function. After less than a week on added gluten protein, subjects experienced significantly increased natural killer cell activity, which could be expected to improve our body’s ability to fight cancer and viral infections. Another study found that high gluten bread improved triglyceride levels better than regular gluten bread." - nutritionfacts.org/2016/02/23/how-a-gluten-free-diet-can-be-harmful/ And that's just the thing, there are so many doctors out there, all with their conflicting, ever-changing scientific studies, so I don't take any of you seriously. I just eat real whole food and avoid the stuff that's been invented over the last 100 years or so. Pretty simple. No "Internet diets" for me, thank you!

Is gluten the real problem? Or is it the glyphosate, pesticides and herbicides that are attached ti the flour that is the problem? Eating many fruits and vegetables and nuts and seeds, especially raw, helps reset your gut biome. Once you’ve have achieved a healthy gut, reintroduce ORGANIC whole wheat flour. Worked for me.

Doing gluten free diet means you can not eat product made from wheat (mostly). And you don't suppose to eat them not just because it contain gluten but also because flour is so fine mill these days that it is a simple carb source too. and it is bad for you because it make you feel hungry so fast and it is so good in the mouth too. Eat gluten free food that is not substitute of these flour products. e.g. you eat rice, brown rice, red rice, black rice. eat beans, eat veggies and all that thing. That's what it means to do gluten free diet.

Thank you doctor for an excellent revelation on the myth of gluten free food. I was diagnosed with celiac disease 2 years ago and had no choice but to go on a gluten free regime. From my experience, gluten free food is expensive, tastes like styrofoam, and has way too much sugar/fat content to keep the food from falling apart. Since starting the diet, I weigh more than I ever have in my life even though the amount of food I eat has not changed and I still exercise in the same manner. I actually feel weaker and worse than I did prior to my celiac disease diagnosis. If you don't have a health issue like I do, I always advise people to avoid a gluten free diet.

I have been noticing this self-serving "GLUTEN-FREE" labelling being slapped on so many things that make me want to talk to these products in the grocery store aisles to say, "Well, yeah, but you are still junk by all that sugar/soy/canola oil/bad sodium, etc." And I have also been noticing the similar deceptive practice of sticking "GLUTEN-FREE" on other products that make me want to shout, "Well, no kiddin'! Of course you are not the type of product that has gluten in it!" And can more understand if it is a matter of, say, "This product is gluten-free but is processed in a facility where other are processed with gluten," just so long as they are not neglecting to keep the gluten-free product uncontaminated by gluten, or, for that matter, from other allergens that are not even ingredients on the labelling of the gluten-free product. Just so much deception in these last days!
@fiery.mercaba

Hi, @@wrenfan. Yeah, the manufacturers, & at times the marketers with their additional labelling, are just trying to attract more buyers to their products, primarily those inclined to "gluten free." I must admit, sometimes, especially since there are so many different choices out there on shelves at times, such labeling of even those naturally gluten-free products with "gluten-free" labeling can be helpful, insofar as it is not known to some people what is gluten-free from what is not. Thanks for your response. 👍🏼

Not all sugars are created equal and context is everything. I agree with most of this video, but the fact that all sugars are so carelessly lumped together is borderline misinformation. Take a white potato. Good source of protein (insulogenic) and as a starch is rapidly metabolized into straight glucose. If you're worried about your glycemic load, avoid the grains and starches. Fruit on the other hand is loaded with fructose and often potassium, both decease the insulin load on your body. Even pure table sugar (sucrose) has a lower glycemic index than a baked white potato- look it up. "Sugar" isn't "bad". In fact it's your body's preferred energy source- especially your brain, liver, among others. Spend 20 minutes researching oxidative phosphorylation and the Randall's cycle. It'll become pretty apparent sugar isn't the culprit. It's when your diet is devoid of critical nutrients like- for example- the B vitamins, that issues really begin to manifest. The problem is everyone is looking for a magic bullet- that one thing to avoid or that one supplement to buy in bulk. It's just not that easy. Eat organic foods that satisfy you. Respond to your body's cravings in a controlled way. Don't outsource your health and let yourself get swindled into demonizing foods our ancestors thrived on because of some weak epidemiological studies that don't (and can't) control for the vast complexity and variety between individuals

@kamilosieglewski2129 7 лет назад
Nick B sufar is body's preferred source of energy? Really? Gosh where did you do your research. Have you ever heard of gluconeogenesis? Our liver can easily produce glucose for the brain if it's needed. The only group you could easily eliminate from your diet are sugars. Please do not confuse people.

After a retarded allergy type test, I recently had to switch to gluten free and candida diet. I started to eat brown rice for carb and rice crackers for snacks instead of cookies and I feel worse and my body feel heavier than before and I put weight. My diet was healthy before but since eating a lot of brown rice , my body feels tired from the sugar from the rice. So I gave up and started eating bread or anything bad with a rule I make. And relaxed all the rules and make everything easier and sustainable. I can eat one thin sandwich slice or two every day. I can eat anything my body wants. But when I feel sick even a little, I try to stop. I buy seasonal vegetables and eat in variety. I am seeing how it goes

Hmmm ... well ... my great grandmother (and all who came before her) had whole raw milk (from the family cow) and bread made with freshly-milled whole wheat and natural yeast on her dinner table (among other whole foods that were staples for all). She would have laughed at this whole "gluten-free" thing ... all of our ancestors would have. Speaking of which, they would also laugh at all of these new diets today: raw, vegan, paleo, etc. Back then, people just ate real whole food. There were no "diets". The Internet has created this ridiculous food craze. Just stay away from all the processed junk "food" that's been created over the last 100 years. Yes, eat like your great-grandmother and all previous generations before her, but remember that she, too, probably drank raw milk and ate natural yeast, whole grain (sourdough) bread.

Your grandmother’s cow was probably grazing grass all day long happily, the wheat didn’t have pesticides and grew in more nutrient-dense soil, and everything was not super processed. Thats a big difference.

That would be great , not everyone has a place for a cow and a place to grow food and wheat. There's more to it than you think. Women don't stay home and tend to all this. Husband's don't either. It's a full time job to be able to grow and eat whole foods year round. Ideally it would be great if everyone could. If you think buying those fruits and vegetables from your grocery is wholesome , think again.

I never thought I'd try to cut down or out wheat but my digestive issues have gone on so long I'm grasping at straws at this point. It started after I finished menopause and after I had my gall bladder out. The tricky part is still eating enough whole grains to keep healthy and like he said finding healthy gluten free pre made products. Right now I'm at eating oatmeal, oat flour and cornmeal. I won't give up grains completely because they do make me feel good mentally. The gluten free bread I bought today has more sugar than I would eat normally so I won't buy it again. I'll give it a couple weeks and if I feel worse instead of better I'll go back on wheat.

Have your thyroid and hormones tested. There isn't one simple reason for bloating. Also make sure you have a colonoscopy and an upper Gi scope. My scope in 2013 was clear and this year the doctor found a 2mm precancerous polyp, 1mm hernia and mild stomach lining issues plus some brown spots on my colon from natural laxative use. Polyps can cause digestive issues even if they are benign.
