@scotty kilmer Which years models made in Japan were sold in the US? I don't want to get stuck with Mazda engine if I decide on one. Thanks! PS.. spouse loves her accord still, thank you again!
My mechanic charges $85 an hour but is the most honest guy I know. A lot of people look for the cheapest labor costs and those are the mechanics that are rip offs.
@@jesseashmore8426 Same here I know a really good mechanic like that. He used to have a shop, but now he works out his garage charges the same money but he will deal just about anything to do with car repairs and car stereo.
Scotty, I have the exact same car! 2007 Toyota Yaris Sedan. 218,000 miles. Runs great! No codes - no nothing. Love this little car. I take great care of it. I am having new bearings put on the front next week. Three weeks ago , I replaced the valve cover gasket, VVT Valve, VVT Filter Screen, CAM sensor, Battery, Plugs, Coils, Oil, and PCV valve. Did all this myself. I've owned this car since 2016.
"A lot of times I drive, like, for ten miles with the emergency brake on. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it really doesn't say a lot for the emergency brake. It's really not an emergency brake, it's an emergency 'make the car smell funny' lever." --Mitch Hedberg
LOL now I did wonder what the noise was, but I called my husband (the owner of the Yaris Scotty did the video on) and told him oh my gosh your car is making a funny sound!! It’s a scraping sound! I look down after maybe 3-4 miles of driving and notice the brake...... 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
@@lindsayfinney3639 “Shut the front dooor!” Was that really you?? I’ve seen much worse. My cousin tried to use jumper cables when her seized up. It happens to the best of us.
I love your content!!!!! I bought a first gen Tacoma a while ago and these videos help me so much in diagnosing problems and decision making! Keep up the good work!
On the Asian market, that car is called a “Vios”. And btw, Toyota made new generations of that. It just wasn’t offered to the American market. My guess is because it will eat into the market share of the Corolla. The newer Vios is so well equipped and not that smaller than the Corolla, way cheaper, so that’s why it’s one of the best selling cars in Asia.
if you ever know anything about america, everything is big there a car with 1.5L N/A is actually laughable there...even the corolla with a 2.0L is considered "small" there but is considered quite big in the asian market their camry had a V6 engine there that will never be sold in the asian market
@@alien13579 a relative of mine once driven a Camry with a V6. But it was a company's car(Toyota). The normal ones are 2.4, and those are considered big engines in Asia.
The hatchback model was built for the USA model in France through 2018, Scotty is misinformed on the Toyota Yaris, it wasn't built by Mazda until 2020 model which is not discontinued in the USA.
My ex-girlfriend did that to my first car. Can back asking me why my car drives funny, so I asked if she released the E--brake and then she started laughing!!! Like I said, EX-girlfriend!
Last year I bought the 2007 yaris hathback LE. 2200 bucks with 160k miles, put 500 in new struts, rear shocks and all new brakes with rotors and drum brakes. Turned out to be a truly great car. Took several long trips and not one single issue. Have 3 other cars most would buy instead the Yaris, but not one of those can compete with the it on gas mileage or reliability. And all 3 of those cost a lot more to buy and maintain.
yes you right scooty, Im still using that type of car since 13 years ago with 178000km. Stil using orgial AC, tie rod, rear brake pad. And fuel consumption like a charm
I had an 08 hyubdai accent all original ball joints....alternator....starter etc etc till 245 000 kms.... Bit I'm sure your totota can get there too..... Small efficient economical light weight cars.....😉👍
@@Toyeboy89 The drive train is solid Toyota, but I wonder about the assembly quality, remember it's parts AND build quality that makes a car reliable and Toyota has been outsourcing too many vital components lately.
I have a 2008 Toyota Yaris hatchback. It is great. My wife did the same thing in a different car. All that was needed to replace it was Regular brake pads, Parking brake pads, hub assembly, Warped springs, ABS sensor and wheel cover. That wasn't much at all...
I have a 2010 Yaris!!! She runs like new! Have you replaced your hoses? I haven't cuz they look like they're still in good shape even after 11 years, just curious how long they shpuld last.
@@shawnws1641 nah only have ever changed the oil. if it wasnt for my wife it wouldn't need any work done at all haha, don't know how she didn't realize the e brake was on!!!
I'm a bit surprised it didn't cause transmission, bearing and brake warpage problems. Often does with the brake engaged. The full sized Cadillacs have rear disk brakes and water loves to get into where the mech brake goes into the brake. 120K miles or so if you set the brake and it can stick. It doesn't take long before the rim is very hot. It'll boil water. Do that long enough and it'll fry the transmission.
Hey Scotty I have a 08 Yaris sedan just like that one, yes bulletproof had it for 10 years already with 165k I seen some with over 230k thanks to this car I have my house, never let me down.
I gotta 2010 Yaris and thing is bullet proof! I totally agree with you. Never had a problem. Not one. Always did the proper maintenance oil change s as me etc. Best car I’ve ever owned!
Had a 2012 Yaris hatchback with a manual trans.Drove it from Chicago to Daytona Beach FL in 2016 and before leaving topped off the tank. Once I got to Florida I added up all my gas receipts to see what it cost me to get there. A whopping 53 bucks.
Hello Scotty, I need to correct you. The red Yaris with the black roof that you showed (Yaris Mk3, XP13, 2010 thru summer 2020) is made by Toyota in France. I have one. And in contrary to all prejudies it's really well made; not much to complain. 😉👍
I also have a 2007 yaris. I hated it when I first bought it (kinda boring) but quickly realized it was one of my best purchases. It rarely fails. I don't have any current plan to upgrade.
I am currently suffering from melted wiring for the complete engine wiring harness and ECM harness. The system got flooded with 90 volts, or so, when the voltage regulator in the ECM failed. I removed the entire engine wiring harness, ECM harness, and the ECM itself. I am now looking for an affordable ECM, engine wiring, and ECM harness. This vehicle had never let me down until this situation. But I have had it 25 years. It was due for a big problem and it happened.
Just bought a used 2017. Used. Yaris. My 2016. Had 60 000 miles. Was hit by car that had been car jacked. TOTALLED my 2016chevy cruz. Never been in shop except for SERVING. Love the Yaris gas mileage. Especially now with the price of gas. Enjoy watching you.
My chevy cruze. My wife had fell in the bathtub. She was taken by ambulance. To hospital. I left few minutes later to go meet her in the er. Well. Car car ran a stop sign. Which had just been car jacked. Totalled. My car and the car that had been car jacked. 3 people they said took off running. Police wasn't able to. Find them. But GOD is awesome. I survived. Just spent night in same emergency room as my wife. Enjoy your car knowledge. May GOD Bless
Just pickuped a 2004 Echo ($2600) put $600 into it so far (brakes/shock's/tune-up) 122,000 miles here in Southern California- Hope to have it for another 100 thousand
Just like my 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer. No melted wires here. Keep on keeping on for the past 12 years. Purchased it pre-owned. It has been the best reliable car I ever owned.
I have this exact model, even the same color, 2007 Yaris, mine now has 348,000 miles on it.... nothing, not even a check engine light, doesnt leak oil, runs perfect.
Back in '94 I rented a U-Haul and car tow. Forgot to release the parking brake on the towed car. Drove about 30 miles, got out of the U-Haul and noticed the plastic center rear wheel caps had melted off!
Wow in NSW Australia that is illegal & your car will not pass it’s annual test. We are not allowed to have any warning lights on whatsoever they are very strict.
Another great vid Scotty! How do people drive with the emergency brake on is beyond me! Love the Purple-like Camaro Z28 in the background...I want something like that next!
I had one of these for college. My mom still has hers. BULLETPROOF ENGINES!! Sure the car is built on a budget but I had mine all through college (5 years) and other than changing the battery, breaks, shocks once, and oil, the thing never broke down. I was a broke college student so sometimes I'd put $5.00 or $6.00 of gas and the little guy would sip on it. To be fair I walked to campus but, I'd have to drive at least 40-50 minutes to get to my college town. I now have one of the Mazda produced Yaris 2018 and I love it.
On that Toyota Highlander, check the mass air flow sensor for debris. Any debris gets in there, engine will start and immediately die ... it won't stay running. Get CRC MAF cleaner and wash the sensor if there's any crap in there. I just did a 2015 WRX that had one of those POS aftermarket filters. It had all the same symptoms. Some filter media foam got caught in the sensor and killed the car. Cleaning it was the fix. Also there was no trouble code!!!
I want to say that the highlander that died while driving, if it has timing belt with high mileage it could be the timing belt broke, that happened to me couple time on Acura, Toyota and Honda, open the timing belt cover see if the belt is broken, and Scotty is right the alternator could go out that cause car to die while driving too, and one way to know if alternator broke down while driving is you will see/smell smoke from the alternator when you open the hood.
I drive a Prius. Prius E brakes don't do jack, or jill. One day I came driving down a forest service mountain road with the E brake on and the dash is lit ever since.
If a car suddenly stops running , it could also be the crankshaft (flywheel) rotational position sensor. If this one fails, the car ecu turns everything else off.
I have a hatchback Yaris and one of those lights came on and the Dealership took $800 off me!! I stopped going to the Dealership and I now go to a local mechanic. My complaint about the Yaris is that the stereo is tinny and it can't play from an SD card.
Love you Scotty, I have had nothing but positive experience with my Nissan Xterra and Frontiers, not sure you can say Toyota’s are ten time the car. I do a ton of 4x4 overland my Nissans have been dead reliable and like the way they drive. I do Agra’s About the Nissan cars but their trucks have easily been getting 200,000 miles , my 80 series Toyota didn’t make it the far.
We used to have the exact same car, even the same color but ours was 5 speed. It had 240,000 miles when we sold it to our niece a few years ago. The car was bullet proof.
same thing happened to my 2006 toyota yaris. the abs and emergency brake light went on. took it to Toyota and it turned out to be the speed sensor. Toyota wanted $900 to fix the sensor. they told me it was a common issue for Toyotas of all models even the rav 4
Hey Scotty, long time viewer first time commenting. I was wondering if you can recommend an economic OBD 2 scanner that can scan ABS & Service stability system lights on a 2002 Cadillac. I have a basic one but doesn’t read those codes. Any suggestions from your wisdom? I really appreciate it. Keep up the great show! Very informative.
Interesting. Those were sold and built here in the Philippines as the Toyota Vios (that one being the 2nd gen) while the Yaris was a separate hatchback only model (the current Yaris is just a hatchback Vios here)
Didn't know that your daughter in law is from Singapore. Guess she a naturalised American citizen now? I'm a Singaporean too by the way. I own one of these "Yaris". But they are called "Vios" in Singapore and mine is a right-hand drive 2010 model with a 5MT in it. It has about 70k miles (101000 km) in it and is still running fine. Managed to drive over 700km with a full tank.
Scotty, I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla that had 160,000 when I bought it, but now it has 185k miles. I have replaced the alternator+serpentine, battery, and the cabin Fan Motor. We intermittently got a code for the engine running lean. I replaced the spark plugs. The code never came back. Was it my spark plugs? I also notice now sometimes that I have to press the gas a little hard to get the acceleration I'm used to. It's the 4 speed Automatic. Sometimes I just worry that both the transmission and the engine are randomly going to go out one day. I change my oil every 3000-5000 miles, transmission fluid was changed, not flushed, has been changed every few, then few hundred miles, then again now close to 25,000-30,000 miles later. The car actually shifts fine and better than before and never skips a beat. (Changed itlike 6 times) For some reason I'm just worried that I damaged the car even though it is running okay. I just want to have a 2006 toyota corolla in 2046 and say I took great care of it while I had it, even though I bought it used at 12 years old for 2400 bucks. I just hope I am taking care of my cars so they can last for a long time.
I'm worried that I: used poor quality spark plugs, somehow put on the serpentine belt or alternator on wrong, or something I didn't do. Oh wait! I just remembered I need to change my air filter? Could that be it? Only changed that twice in 25,000? Wait I think that means it is time now.... Haha....
@@brucemorris3830 you HAD to be the dude that made tha sexist joke... i'm a female & knows more aboutillt cars & drive better than 90% of every man i've met... i bet youre old & forget that females nowadays have access to learning the same as men, we're even encouraged to do so. You made me sick actually..
its true that is bulletproof i had one of those here in the philippines (company car) manual 1.3l the company only maintainance it every once a year, after 13yrs it's still running the gas mileage is great too the odometer is reading now at 206k km
Looking for a unicorn mechanic like Scotty here in Connecticut. Seriously 😐 I need a reliable and amazing mechanic. I had a heart attack and can’t work on my own celica anymore. All I need is my radiator replaced. 😞. Thank you all I hope I get some positive thoughts, bless you all. Be safe.
We call that Vios here in South East Asia. The latest yaris here is using a Daihatsu platform and it looks like a Honda City and Toyota Corolla Altis at the same time haha
Scotty , Show the folks the hydraulic ABS of the 1955 Citroen id19. It's foolproof, it uses the weight of the car via the hydraulic suspension to control the equal paych pressure needed according to inertia, speed and lean angle. All without electronics and 3/4 of a century ago. I had one & when you slammed on the brakes it felt like in a speedboat when you killed the throttle, the rear of the car went down to provide more equal braking. You didn't get thrown forward you just sank into the Barcalounger soft seats. Many of them got rear ended because nobody else could stop that fast. Inside the Citroen you didn't realize how fast you stopped. The front disc brakes were inboard, mounted aside the tranny. When the pad wore down a wire in it grounded to the disc light a bulb in the dash to change it. You lift the bonnet(hood) unfortunately the clip , pull out the old and slide in the new, maybe 5 minutes! All way back in 1955! Expensive easy to bake and break electronics isn't all futuristically logical as they think.
