Here is some advice for a female officer working in a male facility. 

If they compliment me on my smell (I don't wear perfume in the pound) i turn and look directly at them and I tell them it's a new perfume called "Confinement". Don't sniff me. They get the picture.

My first day of training is on Monday and I am going to be working at a facility designated for male inmates who are severely mentally unstable. I’m doing everything I can to ensure that I am capable of holding my own.

While I’m very greatful for those that have chosen to become a correctional officer, I personally think I’d go crazy if that were my job. I don’t know how you guys do it. I couldn’t imagine having to constantly be on guard like that 8 hours a day, every day. Having to constantly assume everyone is out to manipulate you. That would be mentally exhausting. Also, how do you not take that home with you? I once wanted to be a police officer but ended up going into the nursing field (which can be stressful in a different way).

Also if you observing this behavior, observe how the officer reacts to it, and teach them how to react. Don't be the knight in shining armor and jump into it. You can actually take power away from that officer by doing that, because the inmate sees that she can't stand up for herself, even though she more than likely could.

I’m still in the academy for TDCJ as a CO. As a female I’m naturally afraid for my safety as a CO over men who have committed heinous crimes. And I’m small barely over five feet y’all and most offenders are over 6 feet. So this really helped me. I thank you.

I guess I'm a different FEMALE CO....INMATES are human beings, I'm not going to be rude but yet I'm professional ....you have to know how to handle yourself anytime you're working around MALES in general, they know who they can get over on and who they can't...IM never going to tell you my personal business...inmate or co-worker If I get a compliment I say THANK YOU....now I'm not smiling extra hard and batting my eyes but I'm appreciative of the compliment EXAMPLE: I changed my hairstyle, 5 male co workers complimented me, then when I made it to the unit some male inmates complimented me as well ...SAME EXACT COMPLIMENT....and when I tell you my response was the EXACT same THANK YOU because these are the same MEN in my eyes. As a woman what do I look like being MEAN and offended, writing them up for being Nice! To me this sets the female up for failure IT MAKES YOU LOOK WEAK #1 the inmate is going to respond negatively to you #2 The write up won't go anywhere esp if you have MALE LEADERSHIP and even female leadership will laugh over a right up over a innocent compliment ....the key is to establish boundaries and command presence ....now if you continue to "compliment" me ...I'll check it ....if you refer to any part of my body...that's a write up! RULE OF THUMB: Ladies ask yourself if a male co worker (that you're not attracted to) said the same thing would you be OFFENDED? If you would be then it's INAPPROPRIATE EXAMPLE: I may feel a little uncomfortable by a male co worker saying I smelled good and if kept saying it I will address it. If a male co worker said you got a big butt , that's inappropriate off RIP....that's sexual harassment...so you definitely wouldn't let an INMATE slide,, ALWAYS STAY PROFESSIONAL and men will RESPECT YOU!

Yes, document. Write exactly what the resident said because it is a legal document. One time my supervisor told me not to document that a resident said "Don't be jealous" but I documented anyway because it is part of the behavior treatment and that's what his counselor wanted. Never wear hair down because it can be grabbed.

Since I can remember I’ve wanted to be a CO. Growing up in Germany, that was frowned upon for a woman to do. Now that I’ve lived in the states for almost 9 years, I’ve been considering it seriously. But everyone I know tells me it’s a terrible idea. I’ve even spoken to a friend who was a co and advised me against it. I’m very small. 5ft even on a good day, 95lbs. My dog weighs more than me. I wish I was a little taller, a little bigger because then I feel I wouldn’t hesitate to become a co. When you have to climb shelves in the grocery store to get what you need, it doesn’t make me feel very confident that I would be able to hold my own around inmates, male or female. Maybe in another life I’ll be gifted with a couple more inches. Loved your video though, I watch anything related to this topic every day.

Do women inmates hit on male guards?

Women should not be permitted to work in a male facility. The negatives far outweigh any positives. Years ago, before PREA, female officers sued in courts to be able to strip search male inmates, supervise their showers etc, they did these things for many years until PREA came. When male inmates sued to protect their dignity and privacy the courts they lost because the courts elevated the women's job opportunities over the men's basic human dignity. Even today female officers can frisk/pat down male offenders but male officers are prohibited from doing the same to women. With this double standard and disparity of treatment why shouldn't we expect it to generate disrespect and resentment toward female officers and is it not to some extent justified?

Ladies these guys can be very controlling. Inmates want control of everybody. Dont fall for it. They will use PREA against you. Always announce your presence.

On my first day of site visit, the inmates asked me these questions. I would like to share it with you all. And please comment the responses that you would give . 1. One inmate asked me Why are you working here miss? And I said "why not"? He said "because of the attitude" ( he was referring my colleagues). I answered,"well,I don't see any problem with his attitude and I think he's got a good attitude " 2. How old are you? And I said it doesn't matter. He said "what"? And I responded " I said it doesn't matter". 3. You are too beautiful to work here. I ignored him as I didn't know what the heck I should tell him. And he said that was a compliment and told my colleague that she doesn't know what to say. My colleague responded" yeah she doesn't know" 4. Are you working here? My response " I'm just here for a visit"
