One thing that you did not mention is that we as corrections are supposed to be change agents for the inmates. Our job depends on how we present ourselves as an officer. If you are the type of individual who claims to not be scared of anyone or anything then corrections js also NOT for you because you should be a little scared. A little fear increases your awareness of your surroundings, it makes you alert. I would like to say, I appreciate what you are doing here brother. Stay safe.
@TierTalk

Well said. You are one hundred percent correct. Thank you for this comment. It is great information.

I agree. I felt fear being there. If I wasn't, I was complacent. The fear is layered. Its a necessity to survive in those "streets".

I don't believe it has nothing to do with fear , because if you have a little fear they will sense it. These people have nothing but time ,and with that time they watch you as you watch them. Difference is they watch you all the time while you watch one here than another and so on. When I worked I didn't fear anyone , because that fear can eat at you ,and when something pops off you need to be ready fear will have you like a deer in headlights.

Im on the last week of basic training and what I've noticed that has surprised me is the broad variety of positions within DOC. New to the department when I thought corrections I assumed it was all just nitty gritty brute security officer work. Not only is it that not true its far more involved than that. It's help for those that in other words would be only known as law breaking no good criminals. You are giving them the chance to think twice change their process of living and rehabilitate themselves to give it another go round. Plus the avenues and endless as staff. In my academy we have librarians, food service staff, welding teachers, academic teachers, psychologists administrative and clerical workers, nurses and much more. You don't have to be a brute to work in corrections.Hell you don't even have to be an officer. I'm excited to start my career in helping others succeed in the best way.
@TierTalk

Travis root well said. You are 100 percent correct. The field of corrections offers a lot of opportunities for those who seek something different as they move forward in their careers. The public thinks we are a limited profession. They have no idea how wrong they are

Thank you for your insight, it is very valuable to us trying to get into the field. I am interviewing in about 2 weeks for a Juvenile Corrections Officer position at my county’s probation department. If there’s any advice or something you feel would be relevant to the process, I’d appreciate it. I am currently in school and don’t see this position as a long term career, but I do want to stay in the law enforcement field. My major at school is Computer Science with a concentration in information security. My dream is to one day work as a security analyst for the FBI and I feel this position would greatly improve my chances by giving me ground level experience in difficult situations. I won’t finish my degree for about 2-3 years, more if I get my masters. I would like to keep the job for the majority of that time. My question is, will my honesty in using this a career stepping stone reflect badly or decrease my chances of being hired? I do have a passion for helping others and am great at maintaining composure in high tension situations (thanks retail & dispatching experience) so I feel like I’d be a great asset but I don’t want to hurt my chances by not planning to be there for my entire career. Again, thanks for the information.
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 5 лет назад
I don’t think it will hurt your chances. If anything, it shows dedication to the profession. You never know, you may find other routes inside the department that may gain your interest. But either way, I don’t see that as being a deterrent to the position.

Hi there, I would like to be correctional officer, but English is my second language. I decided to join the National Guard because background history looks better with military records .When I signed my contract for the National Guard I was unfamiliar with army procedures, even I didn’t know how march. I only went to one drill weekend and they send me to basic training , that’s why in basic training I was very confuse about Military instructions. The drill sergeant begun saying that I didn’t understand English. They decided to send me back to home because they wanted to send me to English school to Texas. When I went to the National Guard office, the sergeants told me that it was weird , that they send me back to home because even I was talking with them in English. My recruiter took me to meps to take the English second language exam to see if I was able to send me to English school in Texas , but I didn’t qualify because I get higher score. My MOES in the National Guard was 19 delta, but my recruiter asked me if I would like to change my MOES 19 delta for 11 bravo to not have the same experience that I had when I went to basic training and I said yes. My recruiter was trying to make a negotiation to change my MOES , but they said to my recruiter that my process could delay until 2 years and the best way would be get discharged for 6 months . So I get general discharge, but I will come back in July. Do you think we this discharged it is going to be hard to apply for correctional officer?
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 4 года назад
No. I think it all depends on the reasoning. It wasn’t dishonorable so you should be okay or at least have a chance to explain the situation. I have seen discharges make it into the profession.

@TierTalk
@TierTalk 5 лет назад
Congrats. That is a great interview opportunity. Usually they will ask question that are extremely technical and then questions about who you are and why they should select you. The questions about yourself is a chance to sell yourself as a leader and a not a boss. Balance your willingness to learn with your willing to teach. Also try to express how rehabilitation is important but does not exist without safety and security. Try to be familiar with both ends. Balanced answers between both perspectives is what many are looking for.

I'm currently getting ready for my open board interview tomorrow. I was arrested for domestic violence at the age of 15. I took the approach of full disclosure. My juvenile record is sealed, but I told them about it anyway. I've already taken my basic abilities test. But anyway.... Yes, your juvenile criminal record should be disclosed, because if you dont and they find out later, you can and will be fired. Will it keep you from getting the job? Not always. Dont let it discourage you from applying. When and if you get to your interview, be honest about it. Why did you do it? What did you learn from it? Why do you think I should hire you based on this event?

i had a job at a county facility and forgot to mention it they had called me back and said they found it on my record and couldn't offer me employment any longer learned from that....i was a co for West Virginia and had no issues there i was open with it and they asked what i learned from it and hired me after the interview Just nervous going to higher paying states with higher standards lol thanks for your reply @@KS-qw7il

Yeah from my understanding different states are different with their rules on what is and isnt acceptable. I know Florida is very strict about domestic violence (which is what my juvenile record is) due to gun laws prohibiting people with a DV from carrying. I am legally allowed to own, carry, ect a firearm so mine isnt an issue.

With so many departments hiring out of desperation, I’m noticing a lot of people with a very negative out look on the new CO’s being hired. Personally I’ve been interested in a career in corrections since a young age. I’m curios how you would recommend I can show the men/woman that I will be working at the facility I was recently hired to work at, that I am not just a pulse in a shirt?

I'm gearing up and studying up, to go INTO corrections fresh out of Retail. I joke that the Jail is more safe than this damn place (which honestly it probably is, and that's horrifically sad!). I went to get my concealed carry license, and get my fingerprints done, this girl maybe a year younger than me and I'm 22 now... " OH, I don't have my keys... " and she feels around and looks at me, I look at her and we're stuck in this little intermediant section of the jail. We had to page for the fella standing in the office, then let us in. I just sat there and waited, and waited, and waited- 30 minuets pass and this girl couldn't get a single fingerprint done. I'm sitting here thinking " Oh jesus... " she doesn't have anything on her but a thing of cuffs, not a radio nothing. Everyone had a radio and cuffs, but- she didn't... and didn't have her keys either (when apparently she was issued a pair)? I'm just... I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm kind of scared in the sense of, "Oh shit- If I was in trouble she can't get to me!". She's a sweet girl, she is- she's just the nicest person ever but I'm not sure if she was FRESHLY HIRED or what the deal was. I didn't say anything, but the guy just kind of laughed it off up on the office stand above the machine we're at. He worked at the waffle house- and He's tough as nails. I know him from a while back and I'd love to work along side him, I know he'd have my back no matter what happened. it's just, like what? lmao what the hell happened there... I've been in the jail numerous times (not in cuffs) and I've delivered packages, food, mail, I've done it all and even brought people up there. Our jail is small... Super small, but big enough to have 12 people on staff 24/7 as Jailers and maybe a EMT there if someone keeps complaining. Our MAIN issue for our community is DRUNKS, Beer- Alcohol, and some meth heads. Alcohol is the biggest followed up by drugs (meth, crank, heroin, etc) and then dumbass robbers who want to attempt to bust into the Chik-Fi-la and then jump on into the lake... claiming " I WANT A BATH BEFORE I GO TO JAIL MAN! " (hear it over the scanner dispatch just giving a sigh). That's OUR problems, as a small community... however I know for a fact we get violent criminals occasionally, Murders- and from other jails or prisons, they drop some off over night or a few days till transport. So, In conclusion: I'm working with a good mixture of New People to Law Enforcement and Corrections/Jails/Prisons, and a few older guys raging from new hire to old LTs who've been here forever. I talked with the Sgt over hiring and I've come to the conclusion I want to do this- but we're going to take the time to REALLY strain myself and see If I want to do this for a while: I come to the conclusion YES, I don't want to blow this off when I do get hired on, They happily said they would pay for the Basic Training, Housing, Part of Transportation and Food... Finally, This job isn't for everyone...Theres a reason they are CONSTANTLY under-staffed at all hours, and CONSTANTLY bringing in deputies (and the police in town) into the jail to fill (when they can) positions for the day or week. I'd love to give back to my community, and just flat out have a decent paying job that is stable. I believe I'm fit for it, I've however always been a tough thick skinned guy. Never really cared what people thought about me as far as "BUT I'M THE CUSOTMER!! I'M RIGHT!!!" yeah ok, whatever customer isn't always right, they get over it. Everyone knows me, Shit even people I don't know KNOW me now. So that's my story I guess, a shit-show but nonetheless I have my shitshow together unlike some people...

I am 19 years old I am from California and plan on becoming a correctional officer as soon as I am old enough. I was thinking about getting an associate degree in criminal justice and corrections. Would this be helpful or should I study a different subject? Also I used to smoke marijuana through high school but quit when I realized this is the career I want can that disqualify me ?
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 3 года назад
A criminal justice degree is a good choice ...but so is a degree in psychology.... As for your marijuana concern’...be honest. Some agencies may look past that and focus more on where you are at today (especially if there are no charges connected to your use...but some may not). Your best chance is to be honest though...because sometimes they can ask questions that can easily reveal the truth. And the most important thing is you must be seen as someone they can trust.

It's a respectable career. I've been working since May of '18 and have been watching your channel since so I could be on top of my game. As someone who is rule oriented and respects the institution I work for. It's uncomfortably sobering to see how willy nilly other Officers are with inmates. If I tell a inmate they cannot have something they make sure to tell me it's okay, they will get it from someone else. When I am firm on discipling a inmate for refusing a lawful order I have had Senior Officers disregard acts of blatant disrespect because they "Don't want to hear them wine." I am stationed inside my assigned Pod 12 hours a day. More and more it looks I am fighting a losing battle upholding the regulations inside the facility. It feels more like I am a babysitter for disgruntled criminals. I want to be clear I am not complaining but loss for what to do but leave. I have spoken with other Officers who are hesitate to put their foot down, to save face infront of Inmates. Because it's unclear if we will receive support. "Officer shopping" is very real and it's demoralizing when higher command allows themselves to be purchased. I am happy to wear my uniform and continue to be the Officer I expect myself to be as well as others, but I am becoming less and less optimistic about how my facility is run.
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 5 лет назад
There are a lot of people that share your concerns. It’s sad to see the inconsistency in the dealing of inmates. I have done a few videos that touch on this topic. First piece of advice I would give you, don’t change. Remain consistent. Don’t let their complacency define how you do your job. It’s sad to say this...but if you approach your peers and they choose not to change, then go the next level up. And if they don’t listen, go up another level. Each level you go up, document who you spoke to and what you discussed. People don’t like seeing their names put out there. Basically, start forcing people to be responsible. Most likely, you are not the only one going through this, so hopefully, support will come your way.

Hello to all and Tier Talk the next statement is not that of a disrespect one nor degrading one OKAY. true be told ALL that apply and get hired on or are still currently, were, retired from n e jail/corrections agency are 💯 crazy 😜 ( in a good way ) all should fail when asked and they answer No, why because a person is crazy to work in an environment that they have no control of and are WEAPON LESS. Like tier talk said ask yourself if that is what u want. In the streets officers carry lethal weapons on themselves along with maybe a back up, and all else on sam brown. Corrections/jail pepper spray and maybe a flashlight, some batons. Unless ur in the gun tower. So thats why i USE THE WORD CRAZY but with alot of heart ❤️.

Absolutely the worst job in Amerika!!! Command staff are spineless jellyfish who got promoted based upon their "good old boy" "family and friends" only promotional process where merit is the last thing considered if considered at all. Command staff are the ones who did everything that they could to get away from inmates. In most cases the last time a command staff member saw an inmate was on television. They are so far removed from the daily routine of a Corrections Deputy that they have no clue what it takes to do the daily routine on any shift. I cannot wait until the long dirt sleep begins! (3 years and 1 month federal prison, 19 years in the county jail in that order).
