I have a 72 Duster 340, and I have previously owned a 71 Duster 340, and a 72 Demon 340, plus I still own 2 other muscle cars and have owned dozens of muscle cars in my lifetime. It seems that the Hotchkiss suspension is not doing you any favors in the rough roads, but I am sure that the car handles much better with it and with the bigger wheels and low profile tires. A stock 318 73 Duster should glide over bumps like if they were not there, the cars had really soft suspension settings, small torsion bars, hydraulic shocks, plus 14" wheels with tiny tires that had a ton of sidewall to absorb road irregularities. They would still sound like stuff was loose inside the car over rough roads, but not nearly as bad as what you have there. A stock suspension 318 car would be really be scary to drive in twisty roads for someone that is accustomed to driving modern cars, I mean a Chevy Suburban will handle better, but back in the day when there were sharp turns on the road you just took it slow and it was perfectly fine... The 318 was not a performance engine and by 1973 was rated at 150 hp net, not 220. If your car had the 340 it would make a lot more power and be much more fun to drive. Also please remember that the Duster was Chryslers economy car, it was supposed to be spartan, inexpensive, but reliable transportation for a whole family, it would seat 6 adults and have an ample trunk. The base price for a 70 Duster with an inline 6 was a little over $2100 which is the equivalent of a little over $16,000 today, or about what the cheapest car in the USA today is, which is a 2023 base Nissan Versa with no options.

Thanks for such a great, insightful comment! I hope I get the opportunity to drive another duster to compare with mine.

Great duster... no doubt more ancient... the classic beauty and American muscle cannot be replicated nonetheless.

Why does your 340 Duster have a 318?

Previous owner put the decals on the car. Never got around to removing them.
