We do have a Golf Alltrack and a Jeep Patriot. If we need trunk space for traveling we aways use the Golf, far more space for luggage.

Diesel cars are king here in Ireland despite the higher initial cost, they are way more popular because of being able to pulling trailers, their ability to tackle hills with ease, and better Fuel economy. However saloons are becoming less popular, particularly with families where the crossover /suv is the most popular vehicle type.

Yes, crossovers and SUVs are biggest scam of automotive industry now.

Wagons weren't "cool" then and VW was notorious for terrible dealers and being unreliable. The Sportswagen was starting to change that. It had a cult following and was getting glowing reviews. It got great mileage and it was about as quick as a regular gasser. Then they got caught cheating big time and after VW did buybacks, people returned them in droves rather than accept the de-tuning for emissions compliance offered at the time. Now emissions are stricter than ever before for new passenger class diesels so I'd be shocked if there was some kind of resurgence. Or if they ever came back at all.

diesels arent slow , tune it , and they make buttloads of torque . if you think diesels are slow see what audi did in lemans for a few years ,and honestly i wish vw would have offered the tdi with 4 motion in the wagons
