Some situations in life seem to exist for the sole purpose of making you feel guilty for no reason at all. Seeing a police car just driving behind you, or catching the teacher’s eye in an exam when you’re just looking around will do it. Sometimes, so will getting your receipt checked before you leave Costco.
After spending hours shopping, standing in massive queues, and wondering how to get everything back home, being stopped by a Costco employee who wants to check your receipt can feel odd, if not truly guilt-inducing.
Why do they do it? Here’s why Costco really checks your receipt before you leave.

Loss prevention. I had a time where the cashier forget to scan a case of water and I wasn’t paying attention. So I went to exit and the dude looked at my receipt and told me the water wasn’t on there and I had to go back and pay for it. Like I said. Loss prevention. And I would of came back to pay for it anyway.

@@toyotarizzle You have to have a membership to basically purchase anything in the store, but if it's like, a thing of toilet paper or prepackaged food, we checked it. Anything from the food court was exempt. It was really weird. It's like going to cedar point JUST for the pretzels. You have to buy a ticket to get in, even though all you want is the stuff from the food court. That's really the best example I can come up with. Like, I don't have a costco membership anymore, but my parents have a Sam's club membership. Sam's has got some great hot dogs, and I wish I could get into the store just for said hot dogs. Unfortunately, I'd have to bring the membership card to be able to get into the building.

There's two reasons they check your receipt at the door. First, because items are not bagged, they can't tell if you went through checkout or not, and they can't keep track of every person in the store. You could simply just walk out with the cart. Second, and I suspect this is the more important one, to mark your receipt. If receipts were not marked, you could walk back in within minutes, hand it to a second shopper with a second cart full of merchandise and show the same receipt again, and again, and again.

There is no way, one can scan the receipt and the card in few seconds to see if everything paid was in the cart. The reason I was told is to avoid 'whole cart' shoplifters. Two members fill their carts with identical items (with intent to pay for one of them only), one pays for and unloads and comes back with the receipt and tries to leave with the second cart! Bingo, the first exit trip has the receipt marked with a marker. So what they are doing at the exit is making your receipt void for another exit.

If you go thru with cheap grocery items they check in seconds and let you thru. They are only looking for 2 things. Shoplifters and miscounts.

They may be looking for shop lifters, but a few months ago I purchased movie tickets and the cashier forgot to have the tickets retrieved for me. The person at the door caught this and I got my tickets. When the store is very busy the customer should take the time to double check that they have all their items before leaving. That was a lesson learned.

I’m a former manager at Costco. It’s safe to say that they check it to see if what you have in your cart is on the receipts. Mostly, employees just skim through the receipt and mark it. And to my knowledge, they mark it so you don’t come back another day to show us the same receipt again to pass the checkpoint. Whole purpose is to prevent fraud and shoplifting.

Sam's Club,...same thing. We shopped one time, and she asked for my receipt, and I said no thanks....Kept on walking. She started screaming that I am not allowed to just walk out, and I said "you are free to watch me go!" She chased me out into the parking lot, and tried to take the receipt out of my shirt pocket. I asked her if she knew what broken fingers felt like. She chased me right to my car, yelling into her radio. I loaded everything into mt car and gave her the empty cart.... She stood behind my car, so I couldn't back out. I waited a few minutes, and ate some delicious cookies I had just bought. I was waiting her for her backup to come out, but no one did. She just stood there screaming.....then she left. A few months later, we went back, and guess who was standing at the exit. Boy, she remembered me! I asked her if she would like to chase me around the parking lot again, and she got on the radio and started to yell again for help, but she didn't go outside. Fun times...

I worked at Costco for 12 years and a lot of it was checking receipts. We pretty much check for mistakes from the cashier. Cashiers have to work fast and keep numbers up to get people out as soon as possible. (I worked in one of the busiest Costco) At least from my store, according to inventory (which is done twice a year) a lot of uncharged items where always at the bottom of the cart. If it’s a small order, We look at the number of items on the receipt and count the items in the basket. If it’s a large order we look at the bottom of the basket and look for those items in the receipt. (Bulky items that are usually at the bottom of the basket have code or stars next to it so it’s easy to to find on the receipt) The employees who work the door are pretty good at catching overcharged or undercharged items. The cashier is the one held responsible for making a mistake (depending on the situation) Plus cashiers are paid more then an assistant. Working at the door we never really looked for stolen items because uh Costco has some of the best cameras duh! And they have a loss prevention team going on. (Again I’m only speaking for my store) However we did occasionally catch stolen items while checking receipts. I did have my lazy tired days where I failed to check receipts, I’d just mark em!

Bullshit to, "they are checking to see if you got over charged or forgetting to take something home." The main reason they check your receipts is because they don't have a security system in place that works, so they inconvenience every costumer to make up for it. It's cheaper to make every costumer work separately as a personal security check than to put a proper security system in place. The same way it's cheaper to make every costumer work separately as a check out clerk by using self check out than it is to pay employees to check out the costumers items. They just tell you this friendly type crap in that condescending sounding, fake friendly voice that they have your best interests in mind to justify the inconvenience and their way of saving themselves money. Of course the company, doing what they do to you, is going to tell you it's for your good and not there's. Plus, if it were for the costumers and it seems the costumers might not like it, then why would they keep doing it?

As an employee at the only costco in oklahoma, we are checking more for cashiers messing up then theft, we do catch theft there dont get me wrong but its not our primary reason. If you look to your left( right in some stores) as you walk out theres literally a sign saying why exactly we check it. As for "how long it takes" we are not matching each item to the reciept, theres a number at the bottom that tells us how many items there should be, and we count the buggy. if its abnormally sized (say 50-100) we just match the big items that would have gotten left in the cart at the register ( we find that these are the most common for cashiers to miss) to the reciept. If the cashier did their job right, there should be a section of your reciept that starts with "start of B.o.B (bottom of buggy) , and ends with "end of B.o.B." this also gives us the count of how many were scanned and makes it super easy for the exit door to find a mistake. Take a look at your reciept next time and youll see it all there, but i hope this cleared a bit up!

As a sams employee I can 100% grantee it’s to prevent people from stealing. It has nothing to do with checking to see if you were over charged. It’s only to see if YOU the shopper are being honest. Just turn your receipt over, let them check it Let them check your bag Etc etc. it’s easier to prove you aren’t stealing than it is for employees to constantly have to watch you every time to shop
@aidencrossstone8867
@aidencrossstone8867 5 лет назад
It’s combination of everything. They check to make sure you weren’t double charged, Check to make sure something didn’t fail to get charged, Make sure you’re not stealing, and check to see you actually have the items you paid for. I work at a costco. I can’t speak for all locations but the location I work for has caught items that weren’t charged, items that were double charged, and found items hidden that people were trying to steal. If you have only 3 items we check to make sure the receipt has a matching number of 3 items sold. If you have a carriage full of stuff we check items on the bottom of the carriage to make sure the cashier didn’t forget to scan to them. It’s not rocket science guys.

Then dont shop. You are an idiot. Probably a thief. This isnt a detention. Or a unwarranted search. I mean i guess they could be bold about it and put up a sign that says 'to help us keep our prices low, you will be asked to show your receipt upon exiting.' I mean they actually should do it that way. It makes sense. That way twats like you wouldnt have anything to say when they asked. Go run a store or be a department manager and see how you feel when people steal the crap that you are responsible for. Should they touch you? No not unless they know you are stealing. But asking for a record of your purchases that you just made? 15 ft away? Hardly a detention. Just show them your reciept. Its not a burden. Unless you are a thief. Or just crazy. This isnt the same as nothing to hide nothing to fear either. This is THEIR product and they have a right to protect it. They arent being unreasonable. You are. Fuckwit.
