I live full time in a campervan with all the luxuries of a home. I never pay for camping. The solar on my roof generates all the electricity I need and I visit a campground every other week to dump the tanks and refill the fresh water. And my time left on this planet is mine to spend how I choose. I’m not tied to a boss or a house.

It also depends if you own the vehicle or if you have it financed. How far you travel, how much you actually cook compared to eating out.

I’m doing the “van life” thing for going on 6 years since I retired in 2017. Wouldn’t have it any other way! So much happier and less stress than I ever had living in a “sticks-n-bricks.” Converted a 2012 Toyota Sienna that runs like a dream and gets me 25-28 mpg depending on where I’m traveling, mountain roads vs “flat lands”. Currently doing a seasonal “workamping” gig at an RV resort/campground on the coast in Northern California where I get a free site, water, bathrooms/showers, 50% employee discount in the resorts store here and their electric to power my 12volt fridge, microwave and toaster oven, so no need to run my Honda generator like I use when I’m boondocking (for free) in Lake Havasu AZ during the winter months. A short walk brings me to a pristine Pacific beach here and while the rest of the country is in sweltering heat now, I’m enjoying 60-70 degree days watching the Elk that regularly roam through, and the whales and seals off the driftwood laden beach. Went for a 3-mile hike in the Redwoods yesterday. All this for 15-20 hrs/wk of “work”, and THEY pay ME! Last time I turned in my monthly hrs they gave me an extra $250 because they appreciate me so much! (my 2nd season here). What I find hilarious is some of the campers that roll in with their huge RV rigs that maybe get 8-12 mpg, set out all of their camp “gear”, …ground mats, grills, lanterns, games, etc. for a 2-3 day stay, then have to pack it all back up when they have to head home from their “camping trip”. All are friendly folks mind you, but that type of camping just isn’t for me. Van life may not be for everyone but as for myself I’ve found life isn’t about what you own, it’s the experiences you have along the way. The mountains, seashores, lakes, forests and desert are my new happy place in life! So If you see a white Sienna rolling down the highway or byways with a front license plate that says “RD TRIP”… that be me!😉👍

No, I hardly ever camp at the campgrounds. I camp where it’s free or almost free. I’m pretty much a boondocker. If it costs more to live in a camper then they’re doing something wrong. Severely wrong.

@@cgwworldministries83 we bought a planet fitness pass so that we could use their showers instead of ours, and that allowed us to park in all of their parking lots as we traveled. We preferred being in their parking lot because we could take a shower if we’re going to bed and another one when we get up in the morning. you can also stay in Cracker Barrel‘s or other restaurants that are more than happy to have you there. Walmarts are generally more than happy to have you and generally you don’t have to worry about big box department stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s. Only when there’s an ordinance in the community will the police chase you out of those parking lots. you can also stay in truckstops and rest areas. But every once in a while it makes sense to stay in a campground that’s only charging you $15 because you’re able to dump your waste and you can use their power.

Very smart to choose a Toyota Sienna in the years 98 to 2003. Very reliable also can throw away the seats in those years so more room and less weight.

@@tgoodson2 Yes, sir. This car has been very reliable. I have been living and traveling with it for the past two years from Miami Florida to Livengood near the Arctic Circle in Alaska. I’ve been driving through British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and more places in Canada putting almost 100K miles within 2 years. She’s doing just fine so far. All that’s been done for her is basic maintenance. This van has definitely been reliable.

I travel on jobs and put the per diem pay in my pocket. Shower at truck stops or in the desert open put two gallons of water on the dash for passive heat and mix to your comfort, use a shower curtain with a pan, dump water on the ground. Toilets are everywhere or get a composite toilet with two bags and goose neck the plastic bag so it does not leak and dispose of properly! Buy lots of fruit and nuts to keep food cost down and very heathy and avoid processed foods! When it gets cold move south. Hot, move north. Call the local unions around the country and work steady where they are in need of people! It is a single life but you save lots of money, lose weight, meet many sweet people that live on the road! Always have a 22 for self defense just in case! Must have positive attitude or it will not work! The universe is your friend!

scotty, the Mercedes-Benz van you describe is NOT the typical vehicle most vandwellers use. that being said -- you're gonna see more and more people literally living in their vehicles, full or part-time, because the economy is failing & people are finding out they can live in their vehicle (& get to work), but they can't drive their apartment to work.

So True!!! I paid $15,000 total for my Sedona (and build) that purrs like a kitten. Has fridge, toilet, sink, cabinets and a comfortable memory foam mattress and all the electricity I need. The best part is I live off my 401K and choose where I want my backyard to be; whenever I want. I hop around my Thousand Trails campgrounds to shower. Life is 10 times better than the rat race I used to live.

I've lived in a van for the past 3 years while photographing the entire country for my book. Ive paid to camp maybe 20 times. There are plenty of apps that will help someone find remote places in the wilderness to camp alone. These people did it wrong, and you took it as a baseline for your decision. I don't need hookups and am self sufficient. I've seen more beautiful places in those 3 years than most Americans will see in their entire lives, including you, Scotty. I love Scotty for his insights on vehicle repairs, but hardly care what anyone thinks about van life. I find it dumb that people pay rent for things they will never own, so to each their own. currently in my van, next to Redfish Lake, in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho.

When I was 17 in the '70s I worked in a sign shop making real estate signs for a then big real estate company (Walker and Lee). One of my older co-worker graphic artists, 19 years old haha, bought a Dodge van and decided to live in it for one year just to see if he could. He built his bunk and storage areas, ice chest, camp stove, showered at KOA's for like $5.00, and came to work. After work the boss let him do maintenance if needed. Those were fun times. I hope he wrote a journal. This was so far removed from today's everything is $$$pecialized and trendy and upscale. We had to innovate, and it was fun.

There was a young woman who disguised her van as a company truck in San Mateo, CA five years ago, so she parked her van on the street. She was using the bathroom at restaurants and work. She bathed at a gym. She said was saving $4000 per month on rent and other expenses which she was banking.

I'm pretty sure if you are doing vanlife 'right' you can park just about anywhere you want for a night except places that explicitly prohibiting it. Further, the more you drive around the more it costs you. Unless you are a content creator, you probably stay in one place for days at a time. Also, most vanlifer's come from humble means, they purchase older vans and live within tiny budgets.

The company I work for had Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans. Everytime a warning light came on it cost another $3000. The turbo usually went out at about 150,000 miles and there was another $6000. They were maintained having the synthetic 5W40 oil changed every 5000 miles. A customer of ours still has his 2012 Mercedes and said he purchased it for $45,000 and invested another $105,000 to keep it on the road for 175,000 miles. Complete money pits.

You must have looked after your vans well. I don't think I've seen a van in our fleet make 100k miles before the turbo's gone. Little engines with big turbos seem to be the only way to pass Euro emission laws, but they're crap for longevity. German engineers were brilliant when their job was making good engines and vehicles. Now they're trying to save the planet, and the idea of making something that lasts a long time has disappeared.

I have a friend with a Sprinter and the engine failed at less than 25K miles. Mercedes refused to cover the replacement. I don't remember how much the new engine cost...but he was out of pocket for the entire repair.

The Mercedes will Benz you over and take all your money. Even retrofitting a house for an EV is cheaper than dealing with these overly complicated German cars as at least it won't blow a $10+K turbo every 25 to 100K miles. If you can't afford a Mercedes-Benz new, you can't afford it used. Edit: In other words, I hate Mercedes-Benz.

I paid 20k for a new van and I can park or move anywhere. Just get hot showers and bathroom breaks at a gym chain in the city I visit. If you do it right, it can be less than a quarter what I paid for my apartment. Travel with the seasons and you don't need 24/7 AC/Heat. Never need to visit RV parks unless you really want to splurge. Small van can blend with the cars parked anywhere.

Van life was never intended for the average person. In fact, the idea was all based on minimalism. RU-vidrs and wannabe influencers created a fad that projected a false sense of luxury traveling. When in reality it is about owning and buying the bare essentials for survival, while you save money and complete whatever goals you have, like, buying a house or finishing college.

Well, I totally disagree on that Scotty. I know many van life people here in California and they save a ton of money and saving it till the time is right to buy a home. This is not the same for all van life people. There are a lot of them, and they have different outcomes.

A 150k van build is an extreme example. Those are basically high tech RVs. A lot of vanlifers spend time on federal managed land which is absolutely free. Only thing is you cant stay in the same spot for more than 14 days. My son took a two week trip in his car out west and loved it. He then bought a modest van and is building it out. I personally could handle a couple weeks on the road. But you do have to be a special kind of person to do it for years. Some of the happy-go-lucky vanlife channels are probably way more glamorized than reality. But some people seem to like it.

That's what mine was. Decked it out to look like a landscaping van. Stenciled "McAlister landscaping and general labor" on the side with a phone number linked to a TextNow number set up to seem legit. I actually got hired for a few jobs it was such a convincing work van

As someone who lives in a van, It’s so worth it depending how you go about it and what sacrifices you’re willing to make. I got super lucky and got a dodge b350 camper van from 1992 with the 5.9L for 1K and besides general maintenance and some of the 31 year old parts, it’s saved me so much money especially since work has led me over a thousand miles across the country. I’ve put maybe 2K into the vehicle since i got it and since it’s been maintained and treated very well, it works out for me. Van life ain’t for everyone but if you can get lucky or sacrifice some things, it’s so worth it

@@davesmith3023 It has a shower and it had a normal toilet with a black tank but the previous owner never used it and got rid of it because black water is a pain to deal with. I got a cassette toilet for 100 bucks and it’s great. I took out the propane water heater because o don’t need it and prefer the storage space but I will eventually put an electric water heater in that will run off my batteries

Those people did NOT know what they were doing! They probably stayed at all the biggie RV "resort" parks that cost $85to $100 a night! Sheesh! And what could they put in there that cost$105K??? We spent a week at an Jellystone camp in Colorado. Man, that price is way to high if you want to live on the road - and we do! We left CT in Oct of 21 and have been having a blast and saving money.

Van life costs nothing. You can park almost anywhere as long as you blend in (ie self contained in unmarked business van) and don’t hang around for too long. If you want to stay days or weeks, see about finding somewhere, but not a campsite. Do a little deal with someone/ask around/use common sense. If you find work in the country you will often be able to stay there while you do it, saving money. Just don’t go round looking like a New Age traveller and blend in.👍

In Nevada and Arizona in my RAM PROMASTER CITY VAN I park consistently at beautiful wilderness settings at no cost. My van is brand new and my cost are within my Social Security income. I am also able to stay at a casino hotel once a month. Apartments are just a shake down that is why so many people are ending up in the streets.

I knew someone who started up a fleet to partner with AMZN. It grew from 10 to 100 quickly. He had Ford Transit 250s (extended), and Mercedes Sprinters (extended version) The Ford was by far the easiest, low maintenance, and prefered van by the fleet and crew. The Mercedes had an interior meant to look like a fancy Mercedes, but the gauges easily broke. They required diesel for fuel, and near as often: 'def fluid.' Ford Transit 250s never had any issues, they require 87 gas, the interior was robust. Drivers were far more confident. New tires and oil changes were the only maintenance required for the most part. These vehicles' maintenance schedule were based on the manual, of course. These were driven 7 days a week for 10 hours a day by the fleet. TL;DR = Ford Transit 250 Extended > Mercedes Sprinter Extended. No doubt whatsoever. I cannot think of any advantage the Mercedes has except its autolock when you walk away

We traveled for two years in two rv’s (started in a Mercedes Sprinter (Airstream) and finished in an Oliver travel trailer and F-250). We sold our home and named it “the homeless tour.” It was fantastic. 54,000 miles from Washington state to Florida to Arizona to Canada (Niagara Falls). I would not trade the experience for anything. We were very fortunate to have purchased the Sprinter and Oliver (23 feet) near wholesale and sold both for more than we paid. We belonged to an RV club so our camping fees were very reasonable. The National Parks and State Parks were around $20 a night, granted we had a senior discount. I respect your tips and experience on keeping our vehicles lasting longer. Stick with what you know from personal experience, please.

I did vanlife for 2 years. Pros: Living in nature (if you choose to), fresh air, good views, no landlord to deal with Cons: Just finding somewhere to lay your head for the night where you wont be disturbed and is safe, society is not accommodating to vanlifers, it's not cheaper than renting a place (in my experience), random people knocking or trying to break In, cops knocking, racking up miles on your van, your livelihood depending on your van not breaking down, depending on people for storage, showers and laundry. It's a neat lifestyle, but I'd only do it again if I had to in retirement!

You can join clubs like Harvest Host and many others that offer plenty of places to stay. Sure it cost money, but if you want to be secure it's going to cost you something. In my opinion, comparing van life to apartment livings is comparing apples and bowling balls. I don't think saving money is a good reason to live in a van because savings are not guaranteed. There are free options, depending on what part of the country you're in, but it takes a little planning to make that work long term and not everyone is a planner. I'm drawn to van life more for the excitement, freeing lifestyle, changes of scenery, the people you meet, etc.

They did van life wrong. You buy a used cargo high roof transit or Promaster for $30k. You spend another 10K to make it a mini RV. Insulation, lighting, exhaust, propane cooker, sink with water, folding bed, and invertor. Showers and restrooms are at gyms or hotels. Worst case you get a portable shower and a bucket. The point of this is to travel the continent at a lower cost without the parking restrictions of an RV.

Or get an E350 and put a hi-top on it, I have less than 30K in mine and it only has 85k miles on it now. Propane is a pita, induction cooktop and a white gas Coleman. Don't need a sink with water either, that takes up a lot of space. I wash dishes in a bus tub, works fine.

@@vg4472I lived off my planet fitness membership for two years, cheap as heck and showered whenever I could drive up to a Planet Fitness. There are also pay per use showers and truck stop showers. And the good ol water in a bowl. A bowl of water, soap, and a wash cloth will get you clean. Worked everyday with a bowl wash in the minivan I was living out of while working and was clean and fresh every day.

Van life will become more commonplace because of the incoming crisis brought about by the ridiculous housing market. Also, stealth camping will help in saving on fees. And if you live in a city like Detroit, you can go to a neighborhood where residents park on side streets, and station yourself there. Also, plenty of urban prairies to hide in. This only works if you intend to stay in the city and work nearby, so you commute with the van. Pretty much your registration and insurance will become your rent.

I’ve been living out of my Ford transit connect for the past couple of years and even though it’s really small, the gas mileage is incredible and it’s a very reliable car. If you want to camp for free, you gotta go to the national forests dispersed campgrounds. Places in town include Bass Pro Shops, Cracker Barrel, some Walmarts, truck stops, rest stops, abandoned businesses, hotels, etc. The list goes on and on if you put in the work like I did. Always keep the Allstays app handy.

If you educate yourself to living cheaply …. It can be done in a small home, rv or boat. Have a boat now … never go to a Marina except to fuel. Mostly anchor, use sails and solar as much as possible, do most of your own work, fish to supplement food and for barter. Learn the ropes … a frugal person can live anywhere.

Seniors have discounts at CoE parks, 12 dollars a night, full hook-up or dump station ( 360 dollars a month ). State parks have seasonal cards to buy, usually half price ( full hook-up and about 600 a month ). They all have two week max, so move to the next park that's neat bu. And there are free or marginal cost throughout the US. It all depends...travel and see this or that or stay home and mow the lawn, watch TV, talk to the same neighborhood, go to the same Walmart, and be home free...paying 3 or 4 thousand in taxes...monthly insurance...Be the one down the road that all the neighbors know.

There seems to be a lot of people out there enjoying van life on a much smaller budget. I have a well cared for older class c motor home with reasonably low miles that I bought a few years ago from an older couple for $8500. I've done very little to it and don't expect to. I think there are many like me that are the other end of the spectrum.

If the car has a manual transmission, still you can start it by pushing the car and engaging the 3rd gear. A major point for manual.

Vanlife can be a very affordable/flexible way to travel. I’ve had my 97 Roadtrek Van for 2 years and it is a learning curve on finding free/safe spots. It’s not for everyone, this is not the Ritz. While traveling, we’ve been able to have great flexibility while spending way less than motels/flights/rental cars.

You can make a good living doing “hot shot” deliveries while you travel. I loaded many trucks back in the day that was just a sprinter van with a bed in the back.

Vanlife is good. You don't need to pay campsite fees, you don't need to do high miles, and you don't need a Sprinter, or to spend loads of cash converting it. The truth is, you can save a fortune by living in a van.

Van life is best for singles and best when done with ultra stealth builds so you can park it anywhere and have it just look like a work van

Love camping with them and with camper toppers and having one around as a mobile motel for fun and for work and for many things and even a safari van are made for this reason being knocked for the style

Based on these comments, it seems that most happy van campers are solo travelers. I think Scotty’s opinion reflects couples having a hard time adapting to the lack of space.

Your math is wrong we fulltimed for 8 years in our 40ft 5th wheel and it is a great way to see the USA for pretty cheap we stayed in each resort for 2 weeks at a time with our private campground membership that cost 4500 bucks after that the dues are 250 a year and all the resorts are nice and safe it was way cheaper than our house only reason we got off the road is because of health reasons don't stay at KOA etc... or move every 2-3 days or it will cost ya a fortune and your all good

Stealth is where it’s at. There are many places to park when you’re not in an RV. I do this out of my pickup. I have 2 dogs and 2 birds. We are happy on the road. I save more money in here than my house. One day might do bigger, but I’m 64 now, don’t know how much longer I can live on the road

On the stuck transmission I would do the ole battery disconnect thing (negative black terminal). Has worked several times. It’s literally starting from the ground up. Might as well clean the terminal connection before you reconnect it too. Sometimes my cell phone requires a power outage to get out of a slump too. Can’t explain it but it works😆

So true, van life is not cheap or easy or fun, most of the time. I owned an '88 Westphalia fo 25 years and was ratted out by every paranoid, married (read envious), craven homeowner that saw a parked (suspicious) van. Try to park for the night at a secluded beach (parking lot, sideroad, sports field etc.) not a chance...someone is going to relay the co-ordinates to the police as a sign of their civic duty. A hard rap by the police on the side door at 3 am ruins paradise real quick. No regrets whatsoever selling the van......

Yup. Depends on the area. Rolling brothels were a major issue in rural Alabama and you can't just go set up shop anywhere.

I'm not going to blow anyone's cover but I myself lived in my car for a few months. I found a parking lot in which I didn't stick out. It helps if the store is 24/7 which is not common anymore. Most Walmarts allow 3 days of overnight parking. If you live in California there are a lot of Walmarts. Also there are a lot of different parking lots. Also many different neighborhoods you have to learn. Basically at night get your sleep once the sun comes up hopefully you have a job or something.

Just changed my AT fluid in my 2012 toyota sienna. It runs like a dream! I feel so proud and happy. Edit: fluid changed at 180k miles, next change in 30k miles to keep it rejuvenated.
