After A LOT of trial and error i realized i am more of complex fashion case. i am cold constantly and live in a rather cold climate, addressing this problem has never been my priority, and so I always ended up having a lot of nice way too cold clothes and wearing hoodies instead 24/7 :D i am a soft dramatic with gamine, romantic and dramatic essence, i love deep rich colours which is perfect because i am a deep autumn. i loooove soft fabrics, velvet, corduroy, soft leather, silk, cashmere , knits and wool. i love to have a elegant but also a little edgy and bold style - colour and fabricwise, pattern is not too much of my thing. historically i always just bought bold tshirts which i never wore because of them being to cold for me. it came as a revelation: i had to put the emphasis on the outer layer of my clothes and get a set of basics out of wool, cashmere and cotton for all the rest. (which i mostly bought second hand because these materials are expensiiiive) i bought some nice cashmere sweaters and loved them but didn't want to wash them so much so I looked for basic t-shirts that would cover my arm pits to wear them under the sweaters. now the standard setup is always the same: a bra, same black or green or brown bodyhugging cotton t-shirt (which is long enough to tuck it into my pants), basic layer of body hugging wool sweater/mostly turleneck plus in winter another wool/any sweater, 2 layered wool or cotton leggins + skirt or a leggins and a pant, cotton socks, wool socks, boots and a edgy or elegant statement coat. it resulted in me having less amount of random tshirts and other printed basics but more coats and fun things for the outer layer. i found so many things out on my journey: 1. i almost never feel good in any trendy jeans except for ballon or paperbag jeans or my alltime favourite: the newly hated skinny jeans. as a person with an hourglass figure i can wear many jeans styles BUT most of them are just not comfortable . i can not sit down in jeans because my ass is too big, it hurts my stomach even if i buy them bigger. so i need either stretch or built in space. everything but highwaist is a waste of my closet space 2. i can not wear flared trousers or coulotte style stuff. i dont look elegant, i look chunky af and i dont like the wind coming into my ankles. 3. every trouser that looks ridiculous with a leggins under should be a specific summer trouser or not be bought. 4. i tend to wear a whole other colour palette in summer than in winter and should restrain from buying winterthings in my favourite summer colours (bright yellowish greens) or vice versa. i turn pale as a tooth in winter and look horrendous when i dont increase the contrast level in my clothes aswell. it took me a lot of time to accept that i am just too freezy ( and weirdly shaped) for a jeans outfit or for most revealing clothes, i pack all that in our 3 months of summer :D there is still a lot to learn but this has been my journey so far and it has been working well for me

This is great, though! I know it's been a journey but you've honed your style recipe for both what you like and what works for your body and lifestyle. It's ok that jeans aren't your thing, there are tons of other outfits to build upon. It's really cool to hear how you tested and explored and landed on an authentic personal style. Congrats! That's major progress🥰🎉

First; LOVE your channel. I agree with everything you say pretty much to a T, EXCEPT! the Jeans sizing- kind of. Personally, I have always found that buying my size doesn't work- jeans are either larger or smaller than my measured size- I suppose you may be talking about denim fit in general, I'm talking more about purchasing denim but amount of ease does severely depends on the style/cut of the jeans and the amount of stretch in the denim itself. The two finger trick is really meant to be the size after stretching, for comfort-- or if you get a 100% cotton denim with absolutely zero stretch. But good luck with that if you have hips; this is typically also why men's and women's jeans are made using denim with different fibre contents. Most mainstream jeans stretch up to 2 sizes after the first few wears. Also you have to take into account how frequently you launder them. Personally, I buy jeans that just BARELY fit, and they tend to stretch to perfection by the 3rd wear. I never go over 2% stretch content, and don't launder unless necessary (10+ wears with airing and freezing etc), which helps loads with fit and longevity. This is probably too much information lmao. If it helps give me some credibility, I studied fashion design and textiles and am a textile specialist by profession, so I promise I'm not pulling this out of my butt. 😛
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign Год назад
Totally agree with this in the sense that denim fit is important. I'm not sure which section you are referencing, but it was more of a "don't freak out if youre a size 6 in this brand or a size 10 in that brand etc"- because the fashion industry has no base standards really for sizing or grading. I think the two finger thing is personal preference. I don't like buying slightly smaller because of my specific proportions, then tend to fit everywhere except my upper hips and then they feel constraining around that area and the waistband, but they also don't stretch out to the "perfect fit" without going too loose (which is cut dependent as well). Ultimately that will include how you like your jeans to look/fit, the content of the jeans, and your lifestyle/wear and use. But totally agree with your points in general and appreciate your clarifying with your knowledge and experience!

This has been UNBELIEVABLY HELPFUL!!!!! After I complete each step I come back and watch...but alas. I'm having such a hard time identifying basics for my Kibbe ID (romantic) and Essence (ingenue). Closet full of costume pieces here lol. If basics only have minimal design elements, but your ID thrives off of ornamentation...do I still need a plain t shirt? what are our basics??? A cute mini breakdown of basics for the IDs would be amazing!
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign Год назад
So i think basics will shift based on the personal style goals of the individual. However some iteration of basics will make most peoples closet much more functional. It doesn't have to be a plain white tee. If you feel you need a bit more detail in your pieces, that's totally fine (just keep the balance in mind compared to your costume pieces). So your basic could be a soft, light knit wrap top ( minimal design details, but soft fabric and plush). Versus a costume piece might be the puff sleeve sweater with ruffle trim and sweetheart neckline. In comparison, they have two levels of detail. The knit wrap top could be worn more frequently and still serve as a basic piece. And also, ornamentation could be easily applied with accessories as well or even prints. If you opt for a basic fitted tee- perhaps it has a small scale soft print on it that mixes well with the rest of your wardobe but doesn't feel overly detailed like the ruffled top etc. A draped blouse or shirt could also work well for a basic with more ornamented earrings. Ultimately there will be trail and error, and my hope is that I help you train your eye to slowly see where your personal style meets your body meets your style systems. Because every kibbe romantic won't have the same go-to pieces. Hope this makes sense!

Having finally finished I really love this video! I made a similar vetting list (my "rules") at the start of the year trying to cut down on the problems I noticed I'd had the year before (i've found my biggest weaknesses are limited edition items and collaborations between small brands and small influencers i follow - i feel really guilty if i don't support them, esp if i love the collection), but now that more than half the year is over I've been frustrated that i seem to still be struggling. In light of that, your videos have helped me so much. In particular I've learned i need to focus on basics going forward - that the trouble i've had with a lot of pieces i "should" love is that they're not basic enough and i don't have enough basics to pair them with. Some of your points are things I already think about (does it match my color palette? what fibers is it made out of? etc) but I really like "does it highlight a part of my body that I like?" because that's such a useful question! Very much something I've overlooked in the past. Now I'm going through the pinterest board I made of pieces I'm thinking about for autumn to narrow it down even further. My own personal vetting list also included, "If there's a detail I'm on the fence about, even if the other details of the piece seem perfect, when i actually buy the piece that detail will end up being the reason I don't wear it", which has been good advice for me in my own shopping journey. It's always true, and if i don't heed my own advice I always rue it!
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
That is a great question to add, I love it! And I'm glad you found some useful questions to add to your list in this video. It can be difficult when it's limited edition or you want to support the collab. I always keep in mind, if support is the goal there will be future opportunities and ultimately the artist or influence wants you to LOVE the piece. And if it's limited edition or time sensitive I try to pick items on my shopping list (already vetted as necessity) as much as possible
@rosereddened
@rosereddened 2 года назад
@@Gabriellearrudadesign I feel that we who love fashion find it all too easy to love something for its own aesthetic beauty and want to own it the way we'd want to own an art piece, but don't realize that's why we want to own it. I love how you break down the reasons you're drawn to a piece and how and if it fits into your wardrobe and lifestyle in a way that works for anyone and any style. Sometimes I struggle with your more abstract concepts (I can't figure out the personal style map concept, though I loved how you explained yours in this video. Not your fault, this is a me problem) but the metaphor of basic pieces taking you to the different parts of your town now lives in my head rent free.

Thanks a lot for this! I used to be a Marie kondo fan and loved her system. Now I realised that by throwing away what did not spark joy, I throw many basics and leave the interest pieces… I somehow had the belief that all my items should be unique And really loved by me, and at the same time they should be able to go with each other. Know I know better :D My second mistake, I wish I saw your video before as I already went in a shopping spree…

hey heyyyy loved this one. would love more info about this closest cluster idea!! I've tried different things in the past, including actually picking out outfits and hanging them in my closet that way, and am now not using my closet but instead using a rolling rack and only putting on itt the things I am really liking right now. Ha. That way my actual closet is sort of "the store" and my rack is easy to grab outfits off of. I think this means I have too many clothes. 😂
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
Haha maybe! But in a way that’s clustering too- if that’s working, I’d keep going with that and maybe start a secondary cluster in your closet of “next in line pieces”. You might start to see the threads of the pieces not getting chosen or the pieces you are loving (examine, style, fabric, silhouette, outfit category for both and it may give you some really helpful insights on what your wardrobe needs/preferences are) 👍🏻👍🏻

Idk who suggested but the picture thing you mentioned rarely gets talked about but had helped me so much in my impulse buying since I have now stopped buying things I like but then when it arrives I forgot about it. Realise I didn't like it on me. Or it was not thought out well so it doesn't work with anything I have. Saving pictures in your photos or within apps then going through them and deleting it (I save too many so I end up deleting 100 photos each purge) and eventually you build a shopping list from the things that survived numerous purges and are at the top. If this makes sense

Loved this so much, as usual! I have to laugh at your outlier/costume piece as that sort of thing is closer to most of my wardrobe. I gravitate to more dresses in prints, big colours with often interesting sleeves or other detail. This definitely speaks to me, I pair these with a lot of interesting shaped or cut knits in more neutral colours. I do also do a lot of skirts but these also tend to be plainer and then jeans as well. What this video definitely did show me is that what is missing in my wardrobe is more neutral/basic tops in single colours. I don't need more printed/striped/interesting detail tops, enough! I need more black/dark blue/grey tops in good fabrics that will layer nicely and play well with my printed and/or crazy pieces.

@@Gabriellearrudadesign Awww, coming from you that is very special praise and I feel better that my wardrobe doesn't really fit the cluster ideal because most pieces are an outfit in themselves! I would love a more in depth video about this topic, like an action plan, perhaps with more real-life examples. Some open questions for me would be: - How frequently do you change your clusters - with the change of every season, so every 3 months? - Do you suggest having multiple "theme" clusters for personal and professional/business style, or just the two? (Further examples would be helpful) - How many pieces should be in a cluster in total - is it 5 pieces like in the excel sheet? - Maybe a silly question, but what happens with the clothes that are not in your cluster - do you not wear them that season?

- In terms of frequency, some pieces in a cluster can carry over to the new season, but yes every season you should be moving out that seasons clothes and brining in the current season. Which means some of your clusters would need a "re-up" or re-jiggering. - I suggest having as many clusters as your lifestyle needs (I hope that doesn't sound too vague). And theme/color can be one way, OR you can do it by lifestyle, or both. If all your clothes generally work for all parts of your lifestyle then I would do it by pairings/color/print/theme. - That excel sheet was just the start of a cluster. I would say minimum 5 pieces, ideally more like 7. And if your wardrobe has a lot of common threads you could even do clusters with like 12-14 pieces. And the more honed your closet becomes, and the more you start to see the pairing possibilities, the more crossover your clusters can have (meaning you see easy/cool outfits across clusters, but that can take more time to develop) - So once you build one cluster, you just start building another until you closet has a few very targeted sections. And those "basics" and neutrals become bridge pieces to get you from cluster to cluster essentially. This allows mixing and matching to be much more targeted. If you're finding you have a lot of outliers ( like that floral dress I showed towards the end of the cluster section), I'd revise my shopping strategy and wardrobe balance. For me that meant I had purchased too many one off pieces, or what I refer to as "costume pieces" (from another video). You can absolutely still wear them, and I hope you do. But those piecces that don't fit in any cluster need to be evaluated why. Is it because they are costume/one-off pieces? For a special occassion? Does that piece indicate you might have some wardrobe gaps and need to buy a few pieces for that cluster to round out your wardrobe, or is that piece an outlier? Does this help clear things up?

Being plus size and living below the poverty line makes fashion very difficult to get into. I'm 31 and still haven't been able to find or afford a well fitting bra. In the past 5 years I've probably spent $300 on clothes, all from places like Ross, Marshall's, goodwill and a couple items from Torrid. I always wear out my dresses, but I never wear my shirts. It's especially rough because I am on the upper range of plus size, so I don't even fit in any fast cheap fashion.

Gabrielle, do you ever take on clients to help talk through some of these practices? I realize there’s so much great info in the videos and google templates but I still think I could use a sounding board to peer review my ideas before making some bigger purchases.

Right now I'm not taking on clients just because my schedule doesn't allow it. But if you have a specific question you can join the facebook group and post it in there, and I almost always respond (just not always that exact day) facebook.com/groups/gabriellearruda

It's a dress, but it's old ( I can't remember the name, I'm sorry). But if you want something similar I would search for a fitted boatneck or bateau neckline

Gabrielle, these are the best spending tips I’ve come across! So much work! Love the fabric overview. I took the Kibbe test on your website and I was really hoping you would help me. I have an interesting question for you. Bone structure/skeleton D E E D Body Flesh D C D E D Facial features E B B E E E My body is mainly D and my face is mainly E with a little B. I’m 5’5” but I look shorter because I have a big head and face that sits on narrow shoulders. Everything is soft on my face except I have a longer, rounded nose. I have tiny, narrow hands and wrists. My ankles are a little thicker and my feet are bigger at 8.5 but they’re narrow and look smaller. I’m 41 and people think I’m no older than 30. Kids think I’m in my 20s. So I figure I have quite a bit of ingenue. So my question is this. Do I dress like a TR? I don’t have any of the sexiness in my face that TRs have. I know ingenue is an essence not a body type, but is it possible that the narrow hourglass shape is ingenue instead of TR? Another thing is that I have natural curls but despite having a lot of R, I look better when I style my hair in soft waves with a curling iron. I wonder if it’s the natural in my face. I would love to know your thoughts and any other advice. Thank you so much!

@@Gabriellearrudadesign Hi Gabrielle! I think I'm Kibbe FN, so I'm interested to find out whether I might have Kitchener Natural essence! I think I do have some Angelic (back when I didn't know anything about styling "white and flowy" sort of stuff was my go-to when I wanted to look ok), however I know that's probably not my dominant or not the only one, honestly I'd love to hear about each and every one of them from you, because currently you're my gold-standard youtuber on Kibbe and Kitchener! Like, I've watched so many styling videos at this point, they either feel repetitive, incomplete, lack proper conceptual explanations or good examples, however I know I can actually learn(!!!) something fundamental and new watching your content, it must have taken a lot of work putting these videos together (plus all the knowledge that has been studied over time), thank you so much for bringing it to us 💜💜💜

Yes I do, I just keep my palette in mind for larger purchases/bigger events. I’m a a cool summer. (Although the coloring of these videos might make me look more contrasted/winter). I do try to stay more with cool colors though

There is one case of complete style overhaul that created the desired result: Catherine Middleton. She is not today what she used to be...even with all her experience in the fashion industry...well, it did take time...
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
Yes - there are exceptions- over years she overhauled it, with the help of very seasoned professionals. And her goal was ultimately to fit a more regal/iconic look. So who actually knows if that’s her authentic style or simply a very well curated and stylish image. 👍🏻😊
