Getting diagnosed with a herniated disk in the lower back can be scary because of the possibility of having surgery one day if it gets worse.
The good news is that only about 10% actually end up having surgery.
AND it’s very possible that of those 10% that get surgery, it may be preventable if they can do the right treatment to heal the disc!
In this video, Dr. David explains everything you need to know to get your herniated disk better without surgery.

Thanks for the info. I had been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease many years ago.Whilst working I lost the use of my right arm.( Too painful.) I was working as a plumbing and heating engineer,I lifted my tool box up to put it in the van and just got it on the lip of the van ,when it stopped working. ( I live in the UK) I drove home, and phone the doctor who recommended trying a physio ( they were too busy). So I phoned around and got an appointment with one. She poocked and prodded . Causing extreme pain. So she decided to attack my neck virtually paralysing me. I then went to the A&E , they x-rayed my shoulder to find that I had chipped a bone and it was flouting around in my socket! Then I had a MRI scan to find she had pushed (herniated two disc's. I was told to rest and take strong prescription pain relief and anti-inflammatory tablets. I was signed off work for six months. I was self employed ( now retired)! I'll never trust a private physical therapy person again.

This is one reason why I was hesitant and did not get a MRI. The few people I know that have had a back surgery still have back issues.

I was diagnosed with degenerated disc disease, a herniated , and bulging disc back in 2006, and they gave me a bunch of exercises to do at home, including the 3 that you showed, and I had been going them until 2018. I had to stop doing them because my back just couldn't take it anymore. Plus, I was diagnosed with bone on bone knee osteoarthritis in both knees in 2017, so I definitely had to stop doing the Superman and any other exercises that I had to get on my knees. Know that you said the twisting motion isn't good for herniated disc. Now I know why my back hurts so bad today!!! I did get a trigger injection in 2008, and it made things even worse. My back swelled up, and I was in excruciating pain for 3 1/2 months, and my back stayed swelled up that whole time! I vowed that I would never get another injection in my back again. Thank you for letting me know that I probably messed my back up doing those twisting exercises because no one else ever did ❤!

❤Thank you. I had this in the lower back❤️So the exercises to slim your waist they tell you to twist maybe I should not do it. I also fell and fractured my middle vertebrae. My back hurts everyday. This is so helpful. TYVM❤

Thank you! This was very helpful! I have a herniated disk between L4 -L5 and had no idea that the back stretches I’m doing are making it worse. Your descriptions and definitions really cleared things up for me and now I feel I can focus on finding the right exercises to do to help me.

Wow life changing info here. Was wondering why I was getting worse and worse despite religiously doing these same exercises yiu said don’t do. Just felt like I was getting tighter and tighter. Have gone through 5 physical therapist and just can’t seem to find one that really understands how to treat disc bulges, which is so bizarre to me because they are so common. Gonna really focus on learning ur techniques. do you have any colleagues that you would recommend in Southern California?? Thanks again for diligently educating yourself!!!! Also can you please tell me what you’ve seen with efficacy of epidural injections, I have appt with doctor today to talk about this as an option.

I have scoliosis and lower dusk is gone with si joint issues which I’m told was due to infection. Non-surgical spine dr says instability. I’m doing a bent knee, on the back rotating legs from side to side - twisting. Sounds like this isn’t good? A chiro hurt me, another said he wouldn’t touch me b/c he knows he would hurt me.
