Welcome to Addicted to Watches. We’ve looked at a couple of higher end watches on the channel before. Some grand seikos and a tudor. Well, I guess some would debate on whether they are truly high end. But what about high end quartz? There is a niche community of HEQ enthusiasts and again there is debate over whether the Seiko 8f series of quartz movements should be considered high end. The watch we’re looking at today has one of those movements, but in a very affordable package. This is the Seiko SBQK073.

That is a little treasure. I have nothing but love for the simplicity, reliability and hassle free experience you get from quartz watches. I bought a Sub with my first big paycheck working as a commercial diver, and despite the fancy watches I've bought over the years my daily watch is a 13 year old DW5600.

I have an 8F watch. The battery it takes is huge and is supposed to last 10 years! Also re-setting the perpetual calendar is a rather funky procedure.

Yeah, I changed the battery on this one myself and I would have had no idea if not for another video on RU-vid explaining it

It has always bothered me that none of Grand Seiko’s lauded 9F series has perpetual calendar functionality. Seiko has perpetual calendars up and down the rest of their normal quartz range, Citizen and Casio too, but the premier quartz watches of the Seiko Group can’t get the date right for more than two months in a row. To distill the issue down to its essence: that’s dumb.

@@quinncide yeah, if you're going to have HAQ then it makes sense to have perpetual or at least annual calendar. Also, it took them decades to make a 9F jumping hour hand (so you don't have to ruin your accuracy twice a year for daylight savings change) I have 3 quartz Omegas from the 1990s that have that feature, include the amazing Omega cal 1680

Oh wow that is a beautiful watch...gotta admit when I got into the watch game I was initially a bit snobbish ala "mechanic only". But there are rly a lot of awesome Quarz watches out there and this is a great example

Nice find, would like an 8F watch nowdays. There is the Seiko JDM SBTM307 (and 303, 305) with similar case, 12 and 6 dial as well as a solar, radio controlled and perpetual calendar quartz movement. It also features needle position adjustment and the second hand hits the markers. Regards

Those models are pretty nice. Seiko definitely went for a much more modern angular styling with them

Nice and it's in-between the watches I have at the moment, I have a gshock metal and it might not have a movement but it sets its self and solar so no battery changes or services with my forgetfulness it ticks some box's. And I have a mk1 christopher ward but it is a chronometer but has no date. But I think I'll have to look closer at this sekio but also interested in a Hamilton day date or a sinn diver.

The SBTM version are solar powered and sapphire.Loving mine since is so light weight that I been wearing that more than my mechanical Seiko and Citizen.Also radio controlled time is just so much fun to see it move itself with solar light

They are great watches. The sapphire on them usually also has some really good ar coating

@@addicted_to_watches The clear coating is crazy good like the sapphire is not even there.Is just too bad Seiko dun do this in the mechanical version or they charge crazy prices for one.

My first "nice" watch was a JDM Seiko with an 8F32 movement. It still gets worn from time to time. The only negative is that I have to send it in to the service center to get the battery changed. EDIT: You didn't show one of the most interesting features--the "dance" the hands and calendar do to show the current month, year, and date of the perpetual calendar.

Good thing about the perpetual calendar is that even if it's only worn from time to time, it'll still be showing the right date and time

This is a hell of a find! I have an 8f seiko with day date that looks like a baby Grand Seiko, but it got out of sync somehow and I dont have the means to reset the perpetual calendar unfortunately. I wish I'd found this instead though!

There is a video on RU-vid explaining how to reset the calendar after a battery change if you feel like giving it a go yourself

The 12/6 and possibly the printing on the dial looked to be stamped from behind and painted rather than applied. Either way it’s a watch I’ve never seen before so thanks for sharing.

You're right it could be. It can be hard to tell sometimes. I had an orient ray and many people say the logo is stamped but it's actually just incredibly thin and applied. Don't ask me how I know 😅

Seriously! I replaced the battery on this one and shorting it to set the calendar took a while. Thankfully there was a video on RU-vid explaining it

Just depends how high on the ladder you're prepared to go. There's always a more expensive, more handcrafted, more independent brand out there

It's fairly old and wasn't that popular so I guess there isn't a lot of information out there

@@addicted_to_watches not a lot, what about none. Either way that is too narrow of a sample to create content. I would call that creative fatigue.

It comes from a time before brands posted lots of information on their websites about all their models. Half the point of making videos on obscure watches like this is to provide people with some information if they happen to come across one. There are many times I've come across a weird or rare model, and the first thing I'll do is search RU-vid for a video about it. This way, I can provide that video for someone else hopefully

Considering the age and how many battery changes it's probably had I'd say it's dust that got inside the case during those times

You have a typo. This is the seiko SBQK077, not the 073…

www.theseikoguy.com/2007-seiko-catalog-v2-jp/ If you check page 69 here it looks like this is indeed the 073. The 077 has a different case dial and bracelet.
