I have dumped $$$ into this first album for sure. It has been something I've casually worked on for over a year and a half, but in the last 6 months, I have really put effort into not only this album, but 3 other albums as well.
Here is the first in a series of 4 albums I will share which are all mystic albums containing US stamps. This and the next two albums show commemoratives; while the last album is back of book stamps.
Building 4 albums at the same time has led me to being burned out occasionally and I would take breaks. Sometimes a few days and sometimes weeks. Eventually, I always pick them back up and continue the journey!
There are many blank spaces I have yet to fill since I've run out of money for the time being. I feel I have reached a point where they are filled enough to merit sharing them.
I deconstructed two large & expensive US albums and placed all of the stamps into these mystic albums!!
I hope you enjoy these early classic US stamps! I love these stamps. This video ended up longer than I intended, but I cannot help get sidetracked looking at the different stamps and cancels.
Thank you for watching my videos and if you happen to enjoy this content, please like and subscribe!
I wish you all well :D

I genuinely enjoy watching your videos and appreciate your passion for the hobby, it's nice to see someone of your age with a passion for philately. That said, please use extreme caution when buying stamps from Apfelbaum. While Earl was a great member of the philatelic community up until his tragic death in the Lockerbie bombing, both John and Kenneth have been expelled from the APS, with John being a convicted felon, thus the reason the company is neither a member of the APS nor ASDA. They have a rather long history of selling faulty material as sound, and Missy then blocking buyers who avail themselves of the liberal return policy. While it can be a good source of quality albums such as Scott Platinum for bargain prices, their bulk lots are notorious for being mostly "fluff" and short on substance. Higher value stamps should NEVER be purchased from them without modern certs from APS or the PF. Also always remember that no matter what "catalogue value" they quote, they (like Mystic and other dealers) will typically only pay around 3% of SCV when purchasing, even if it's material previously bought from them. I say none of this to discourage you, if you're a member of the Stamp Community forum you likely know much of it to begin with. Just use caution; an otherwise beautiful collection consisting largely of faulty/regummed/reperfed/thinned/poorly centered/trimmed margin stamps is sadly worth very, very little in today's modern market. Try not to get too caught up with Scott Catalogue Values, as - outside of exceptional copies - many stamps are quite literally not worth 10% of those stated amounts at auction. They've unfortunately not updated their valuing on many stamps in DECADES, so that should give you some idea of the realistic accuracy. The Alan Miller certs are neat (and he's an experienced philatelist and long-time APS member) but hold no additional value, as you'll need a PF or PSE cert (possibly APS) to sell as certified with any major auction house AND he offers no guarantees on his authentications, as stated on the certificate. Buying stamps is a minefield that gets more and more tricky as the value goes up. Be careful.

@@KylesStamps A perfect way to spend my Sunday between sorting stamps and watching your video. I really like the way you added to your Mystic albums with different variations and cancelations. It's truly a good example of how to present stamps and this gave me lots of ideas to work with on my own Mystic albums. Also, thanks for the honorable mention!

The collection of US stamps that you have is beautiful. The early stamps that you have are the ones that will appreciate in value, not to mention the history that they represent. Just a word to mention, the cover at 37.20 with the black border was a mourning cover that was used to announce someone’s death. Also something that is very interesting to note, according to an article in the May 2002 issue of the American Philatelist, there was a secret language in the way that stamps were placed on an envelope in the 19th Century. For example, a stamp placed sideways on the upper right of an envelope might mean “Do you love me “? A stamp in the upper left corner might mean “Good-bye sweetheart. An upright stamp in the top middle of an envelope can mean “Yes”. An upright stamp in the middle of the left side asks “Do you accept my love?” I saved this article when I saw that I had three different covers with Scott # US 114, each cover with the stamp in a different position. Each cover was addressed to unmarried ladies with the same last name, with two of the covers addressed to the same lady.

I doubt if many people today would be aware that this aspect exists in US philately. If you would like, I could send you the article from the American Philatelist that made me aware of this, along with the image of the covers that made me take special note of this article. Just let me know what email address I should send to.

Hey Kyle. Have you thought about filling those spots of #3 and #4 with proofs? Nice copies of 3p4 and 4p4 can be had for about $200 each. I started doing this about 10 years ago and I now have a large (and relatively inexpensive) collection of p3 and p4 proofs, as well as over 150 small die proofs (p2) from the 1903 Roosevelt albums. Also, can you reply to this note with some details of that #2 on cover (date, from what city, to what city and adressee's name)? I am the editor of the 1847 issue cover census on the USPCS websire and I'd like to make sure your cover is listed. Thanks.

I haven't seriously considered filling spots with proofs but it is an interesting idea. Right now I just don't have money to buy anything, unfortunately. Personally, I'm not crazy about proofs but I know some people like them. I suppose it's a branch of philately I haven't gotten into much. I do come across proofs sometimes in collections I buy. Apologies for the late reply to this comment, my life has been so hectic in the last few months. Anyways, I will try to remember to check the number 2 cover and respond with the details! Thanks for your comment.

You have a really nice album, some really special material in there… I do want to say though, in many cases you could possibly stretch the money you spend a lot further. I don’t want to point out certain stamp auctions, you might end up cursing me later lol, but my point being that you ought to check out some auctions (even ebay) before purchasing them at retail prices. If possible, you might make that amazing album you’ve created even more amazing. I buy & sell stamps because it’s the only way I can afford such things, it also gives me an excuse to buy large collections. Anyways, I wanted to Thank You for making this video, I especially appreciate you saying what you paid for each stamp - it’s really helpful..
@KylesStamps
@KylesStamps Год назад
Thanks! I feel you are correct in that I do pay premiums in the way I purchased lots of those. I find myself being a "buy it now" kind of guy in general but auctions sure would save me money. What auction sites do you prefer?(I'm well aware of eBay & Hipstamp of course)

This video was a pleasure to watch! I hope you do more videos like this in the future. You have a wonderful collection, I especially love all those covers. One question: Why do you keep all the duplicates together in one stamp slot sometimes? I personally would put my duplicates in a separate stock book, so that you’d be able to see the picture of the stamp that was kept in the album well. (This is not meant as a criticism or anything, I’m just curious)
@KylesStamps
@KylesStamps 2 года назад
Well, I haven't thought about it too much, but I totally understand where you are coming from. I suppose my logic would be that if someone has stamp tongs and is looking through my album then they can pull out the extras to take a gander at them. There is also just a subconscious part of me that kind of wants it "bursting" with stamps :P
@paradiselost1914
@paradiselost1914 29 дней назад
Yes, you took a beautiful album and made it look junky with all the extra stock. A stock book is a more appropriate place for your extras. An album should highlight your best stamps and not be used as a stock book. It detracts from the beauty of your stamps.

Wonderful album. Excellent attention to detail. Just a heads up, I would remove the #13 that has foxing as it can spread from the stamp to the album page and then to the other stamps, especially if you're in a more humid climate.

I don't think so, if I had it, it would have been in this book. Though I know very well one section I am quite scarce with is grilled stamps unfortunately. They are pricey and I didn't prioritize them in this album.

You put too much value on certificates. Can be helpful, but not worth any premium and "experts" often disagree or fall from grace. In my opinion, the entire grading of stamps needs to be reconsidered as grading should be based on all factors of a stamps condition and eye appeal, not just centering. Don't give up on getting the higher value Columbians unused as eBay often has great deals on ungummed or regummed copies. You still get great eye appeal, but without original gum. Funny how you spend so many hours pulling collections apart to put your collection together only to have someone someday pull your collection apart to put their collection together and the process keeps repeating itself. After 175 years, I wonder just how many collections your stamp #1 has been in?

Collecting shades of stamps that are not identified in the Scott catalog as legitimate varieties is a waste of time. Shades variations as such, are usually the the result of fading or exposure to something that caused the tone to change.
@MH-fb5kr
@MH-fb5kr Год назад
I agree… printing inks were mostly hand mixed, smaller batches… easy venue for creating shades and tints. Stanley Gibbons is the most prolific in touting color varieties.

The cat values you show are all for VF centering, FYI. For 19th century stamps you definitely need to consult the SPECIALIZED BY GRADE catalog for accurate valuation. Your true cat values for almost all these stamps are less than half what you show due to centering. Of course you know that cat value for 19th century stamps is much closer to retail price than most 20th century issues, so there is that going for you ;-)
@KylesStamps
@KylesStamps Год назад
Some I show what I paid, most have the cat value as you stated and each stamp is subject to any scrutiny...
