I love the non realistic lighting and quickening effects, people have to remember it's not meant to be realistic, nothing wrong with having a little magic in your movie.
@@flintironstag2381it was meant to be cartoonish like that, otherwise you get The Thing 1982 (which is a masterpiece but would be too Traffic for an adventure movie)
I just read a bit of the original draft and the exact plan from Ramirez is for Connor to hide from Kurgan until he's strong enough to take him. But Mc Leod had the take a shitload of heads too.
I dunno. From a purely swordfight standpoint, I think it was down to momentum. Every time Kurgan won or had the upper hand, it was a combination of factors. Surprise, fear and cramped conditions. Wearing down opponents with superior stamina, brutal tactics and a heavy broadsword. Once Connor had space to fight it was all over. You could see it. Connor had the speed, the skill, the lighter weapon; Kurgan was struggling to keep up. He knew he was done for. Burn out indeed.
The Kurgans such an epic villain, right to the very end still has a smile on his face. Well just to quote the great man himself 'IT'S BETTER TO BURN OUT, THEN TO FADE AWAY!!!!!' Says it all really :)
@@Dear1Stupit1Dog The endless killing drove him mad. Rachel alludes to it just before the final fight. Kurgan had lost hope and knew he was beaten even before Connor fought him for the very last time. Kurgan’s endless fixation for the prize turned him into a reckless psychopath.
I think at the end, after he was stabbed, he knew he would loose. And just want taunt MacLeod before his demise. Anyway, still best fight in Highlander franchise and best villain from that, a total psycho.
Me too. It went from second or third favourite movie ever, but now it's first! Especially after accidentally camping right across the Loch from the Macleod castle the other year.
I like to think connor is fighting with the spirit of ramirez at his side. And slashing and beheading the kurgan with the sword of his master is the best way to avenge him. Just a movie i know but i can t help myself to get chills every fucking time and i've lost the count how many times i've watched this masterpiece
The director of Highlander did a lot of music videos before he got into features. You can definitely tell just by the amped up visual effects and numerous musical montages in the film. Not a criticism from me though, I love that 80's excess.
Clancy Brown sure does love playing the Villain, when the part is available. Pet Semetary, and the Shawshank Redemption, are two other examples that come to mind, right off the bat.
To The pigeon 258 yes the Kurgans sword changes sides a bit too weirdly but in theory that could have happened during the cut to MacLeod. Although post-production could fairly easily have sorted out the wire at 7.36. None of it matters though because it is a total mega classic brilliant story & film. Also has pretty much the most spot on sound track of any film.
When Conner makes the killing stoke; he still blocks Kurgan's blow! The opening of the movie uses the best Queen song EVER; "Princes Of The Universe"! (which went on to be the opening theme music for the Highlander TV series starring Duncan McLeod!" "There Can Be Only One"! 🗡🏴⚔️
Thats not how I saw it. I think what is meant to be shown is he was unable to overpower Conner and was outmatched when it came down to skill. Most immortals the Kurgan just brutally overpowers his opponents.
This epic fight reminds me of the classic lightsaber fights between Luke and Darth Vader in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK as well as RETURN OF THE JEDI for some reason
I must admit I had a thing for Kurgan as a teen, especially for his voice and eyes, then I discovered Clancy's natural look and it was like " love in progress ". Such a talented man! One of my favourite actors ever!!!
@commentor93 He absorbed the combined power and knowledge from the Kurgan and all other immortals beheaded by the Kurgan. You're going to be pissed when you see Highlander: Endgame.
@commentor93 Basically the Highlander is absorbing the power from the Kurgan. When you kill another immortal you gain his "power". It is implied that he was the last immortal.
I believe he had to face (2face) both sides of the inmortal force, the good and the evil side & learn to learn in a flash moment (for us) how to keep both in one (mind). And live through and with all this. He was born prepared inside for the real ancient power.
Were I immortal, I'd have a Nnjato for my sword (Straight bladed katana aka "The Ninja sword" ) for a few reasons 1 The blade is slightly shorter than a regular katana so you don't have to worry too much about getting it stuck or hitting a wall. 2 Ninjato would be easier to conceal in a normal coat. 3 It's lighter in weight and easier to move around, giving you more velocity as you slash. Not to mention the historical aspect. A ninjato isn't an ideal Highlander's weapon but it's a strong blade that's perfect for swift cuts and maneuverability
When they do the remake; I hope they add some realistic medieval swordsmanship, not just Samurai orientated. Keep some of the great music scores too. Especially the one as he slides the Kurgan. Certain aspects they definitely have to keep.
Por fin vi esta pelea :D.Creo que alguien con cientos de años de práctica debería pelear mejor no? después de ver los primeros 3 episodios de STAR WARS el estandar queda muy arriba, pero supongo que en los 90 todo era más impactante. Buen video a fin de cuentas, thumbs up!
I loved the opening sequence when he's not speeding during the car chase.....until he finds appropriate music..then he's off! 😂 Edit: All of Luc Besson"s early work was great, such as La Femme Nikita. Also liked that he often used the same actors, such as Jean Reno and Jean Hugues Anglade.👍
Not the best sword fight I've seen, but must certainly a classic one. This was the movie that inspired me to write my own Fic on Highlander, one I'm currently hammering out at the moment. Thanks for posting this fight. Epic fight.
It's been eight years since your above comment, I am merely curious if anything ever came of your writing? Did you end up getting anything published, did it turn into a glorious D&D campaign, did you film anything for rating submission etc.
supposed to be that originally there was some kind of plan to have connor fight a dragon spirit or something, so a lot of the animations are of some kind of dragon. that idea was scrapped but the animations remained.
Great swordfight filmed perfectly from a distance where you can actually see two guys guys in continuous action... I can't stand the close-up fast action sequence crap they film today where you can completely fake everything.
Christopher has terrible eyesight without glasses, so the swordplay looks a bit underwhelming at times, but they did try their best and it show in this masterpiece.
It would be a cruel irony if the immortal's healing were to abruptly cease just before receiving the prize. An ordinary mortal would be crippled or killed.
2023 ... the swordfight itself was so weak as spectacle , choreography , tension that they 've had to bring biblical size destruction effects to the rooftop to keep the audience from fall asleep - though i probably liked it when i was just a teen back then :D
At face value the sword fights in Highlander aren’t great, admittedly. However that’s partially down to the fact that Christopher Lambert suffers from extreme myopia. He acted virtually blind in Highlander. So when you take that into consideration, the sword fights are actually quite good.
There's no way they could of survived that fall!? It was like over a hundred feet like they landing soft are you kidding me, first of all they would of smashed their legs & femurs plus massive head trauma but that's just me! #HighlanderTooFunny
they're nigh-invulnerable except that being decapitated can kill them. they should/could still have broken bones though, just that they'd heal from it. I don't think they have regeneration per se though, just that they don't die. would have been cool if they were broken and bleeding from that point on. but the style is what makes this good more than the realism.
