I began my section hike along the Appalachian Trail from Rockfish Gap at the entrance to Shenandoah National Park to Harpers Ferry WVA, a journey that will cross state lines, cover the entirety of SNP, complete the Virginia Rollercoaster, and end crossing the river into Harpers Ferry. Please join me in my goal to complete this section in 7 days.
Today I left my campsite near the Rod HollowShelter just a mile from where the Rollercoaster starts, I traveled 30.02 miles before i finally crossed the bridge across the Shenandoah River into Harpers Ferry WVA. The rollercoaster was probably the most tedious set of climbs I experienced during my entire hike. Between the steep ascents, and steep declines, the relentless rain and wet feet and the mileage I knew I had to cover made for a long day. Today I climbed 6581 feet of elevation gain and 7224 feet of elevation loss. Today was hardest and longest day and yet another downhill day.
The sight of the river and the feeling of accomplishment crossing that bridge was pretty incredible especially knowing Emily was waiting on the other side.
I am carrying a Mystery Ranch Bridger 65 backpack, with a base weight of 28lbs. With food and water my pack was pushing 40lbs each day.
One of the challenges of being my size, 6'9" and 235 all of my stuff is big and with big stuff adds weight regardless of how light you try and make things.
