Explore Hill House with us, an abandoned Victorian castle mansion of a millionaire. Follow us as we journey through its ruins and the surrounding out buildings, the story of its owner’s shocking death and its uncertain future today. This rare example of an abandoned Gilded Age American castle is not to be missed.

I am an Urban Explorer or "urbexer", photographer and RU-vid creator with an academic background and passion for history, Cultural Anthropology and English with a focus on Celtic Studies. I grew up in a creepy looking 1800s home that later became the abandoned "haunted house" of the town. In 2016 I made the decision to start photographing and capturing on video these abandoned locations that I explored until then as a hobby. My recent focus has been on once great mansions, asylums and lost places. Currently I travel across the US, UK and Ireland to allow you to experience these places through me. Wow, what an extraordinary piece. I'm not a huge sentimentalist but a feeling of sadness overcame me while watching this. Providing a detailed history and current status made me feel personally connected to this once grand estate. Great job! New Subscriber as of today.

It's pretty mind blowing. I know of another castle in the region that the same story occurred with once left to the government with money for upkeep. Very sad,.

Wow thank you! I have been incorporating constructive criticisms from viewers and I think am reaching a point of great improvement. We will soon be adding drone footage and including other explorers as well. You might be blown away with some of the places I have planned. I plan to continue as long as my body will carry me!

@@DesertifyUrbex - Definite cool to see the plans, and the old photos are awesome! Really gives a feel for the place, two libraries, four bedrooms off the second floor one. Don't know if it's the music, the architecture, the era, the ruin, the black&white photos, broken wood, or what, but I have difficulty imagining parties and laughter. It just seems so v-a-c-a-n-t. And sold to the city, sheesh. Leave it to bureaucrats to decay stuff and trash it. Curious that part of it is stone, and a lot of it is brick. Was the brick a later addition / expansion?

I think the brick is sort of the fabric, where as the stone is more of an outer layer or facing. It's very true that after being built the owner hated it and sold it, so it was unloved from the start.

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. May he Rest In Peace. I breaks my heart to see the decay of such a beautiful building. Why would the city buy it and do nothing with it?! I just want to see all the old homes saved. I’m such a dreamer... Thank for the fascinating explore.

Incredible man, thank you for the detailed View. I have been wanting to explore this place for a while now. It is only 45 minutes from my house. This video just gave me the motivation to finally get up there and see it. Maybe I'll go Saturday after work or something. Thank you so much for providing the background on this house. Without it it's just somebody walking around in abandoned house, which anybody woth a video recorder on their phone can do. It's a terrible shame and disgusts me that once the city was involved, they chose to neglect it. What a wonderful job narrating you have done !!! It's pretty shocking how fast water water can be a building killer. I understand roof leaks started and eventually led to a complete and sudden collapse of all floors, maybe 10 or so years ago. If not maintained I have noticed that the lifespan of a house is at most 30 years if it's wooden, often much less. They vanish so quickly on us.

We enjoyed your film as always.We appreciate you took the time to give some of the history of this incredible home. Point of interest. Water towers are exactly that,water in a tower. Still used in most of America today & the world. Water is driven by gravity. Water towers were usually built near a water source. Water was pumped by a windmill or other mechanical device to get the water into a. high tank. Water was then delivered by gravity to the home and drained by gravity to a septic tank.🖤

What an oddly beautiful mansion! The colored paint on the worn rock was a great counterpoint to the grayness of the stones and the weather. Beautiful job with the narration. Totally enjoyed the video, even though it had a very unloved appearance. Great job.

Hi Pam. They can be tough to experience. Demolition by neglect is so widespread, yet we have families wanting to make their own new memories in a house of their own who are homeless as these places rot. This mansion is on par with local sites used as museums or tourist attractions, and yet it is forgotten.

Ms. Sanford, did not invent or contributed to motion pictures. In 1890 an artist, and early inventor of the motion movie camera goes to Mr. Mr. Louis Le Prince, who disappeared mysterious, on his way to present his invention. Con Man Edison took the credit for his invention. His documents and invention, also vanished. I strongly believe there was fowl play resulting in his demise. Con Man Edison, was known for stealing ideas from others. You can research it. All true sir. By the way, I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

I suspect the human touch that contributed greatly towards the decay of this building rather than the force of nature. A shame the city waited 30 years, it is a beautiful stone building that could have lived on for another 100 years

It'll be sad to see it go, but this is a year we are losing many of the largest and most beautiful places in the US to strip malls, housing developments and golf courses. It will be a year of swansongs and goodbyes. Glad I could share this one's last days.

It actually hurts my soul a little bit to see something once so beautiful and still structurally magnificent covered in graffiti like that. The decay and disrepair fair enough it almost adds to the beauty. But the vandalism is criminal.

Pointless and ugly tags tick me off. I was just there again and saw some taggers, so it is getting worse. Sometimes great street art can make the places more interesting, but not that kind of bathroom scribbling. Two years ago when I first visited, it was almost untouched. It is tough to see.

Sadness and pain comes from this once majestic castle. Such a pity that the city let it fall into ruin and now it will be demolished. Castles should be maintained and become hotels or let tourists come to visit. Thank you for sharing this once grand place with us. :-)

Vandalism at its best!!!! This is beyond sickening!! Your video was wonderful 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I’ve shown this video to my father who is a master Carpenter from Italy. He confirmed what I knew. Even uninhabited for over 200 years this place wouldn’t look this bad off. Unless a tornado hit it. The Materials used were top of the line, and would stand the test of time. What’s done is done, it’s just a sin that this place could still be a wonderful place to visit if not for teenagers, and people with nothing to do.

@@DesertifyUrbex When we shot our first vid of this place we were new to it. The day we were there ppl kept coming to look at it. We didnt want to get them on film so we took a few breaks until everyone was gone. We think someone called the cops. We have been here other times and had no trouble with the cops. I agree with you this is one beautiful place with alot of history.

After watching this, I'm reading the terrifying 'The Haunting of Hill House' again. Yet another excellent video and exploration. The place looks daunting, almost diabolical...but at the same time there is a rather axiomatic beauty to it; simply because you can sense the history behind the facade of horror. Ah, I am planning my own explorations of forgotten places over the summer. This has gotten the fire of inspiration raging within my mind. Thanks for that alone, pal.

It would be amazing to have someone rebuild the insides since the foundations and rock structures are so brilliantly still in place! It looks so amazingly beautiful still on the outsides and walls..the inside would have to be rebuilt 💯 but it would so worth it just to live in a historical landmark like this! Thank you for yet another GREAT video with the background history and terrific narration. I will never understand why people find they have to desecrate things especially historical items. What is all the white stuff all over the ground , is it snow ? Again my heart breaks at the loss of yet another historical building.

Good catch on the snow. We often record ahead a few videos so we have a stream of content that is uninterrupted. This means we release videos that are a season or two off sometimes. The mansion has been hit hard by graffiti recently and I can never get over how easily it could be saved. I see mansions in Ireland every year being restored that are in much worse condition. You're going to love the coming mansions in Ireland and Scotland I think :)

@@DesertifyUrbex I wrote you a War & Peace message & lost it hahaha. I have never seen snow before. It is winter here. I don't understand people doing graffiti or other damage to anything worse of all historic buildings.It breaks my heart to that these builds are left to rot. I am looking forward to "travelling" with you. You do such a great job. I unsubscribed several mths ago to all videos abt viewing historical building because I hated not knowing anything about them. I watched a video about Cabins in Keddie Calif. The Mother & 10 year old son talked about being scared if the got caught. She tried to break into a cabin that had new appliances inside & a new Hot Water Heater on the patio. There were 4 murders in a cabin that is no longer there (torn down because of vandalism.(NOT because there were murders in it). In one cabin she stated she wished she had brought a pen to add graffiti on inside walls. The Cabins are all privately owned now. The Resort went broke so all the cabins were not being used until the bought. And many are being renovated now. There are NO Trespassing signs EVERYWHERE. When I stopped watching the video. I researched Keddie Resort then I made 4 comments about her trespassing. ect. I was so angry and her teaching her son that it is OK to trespass & break the law. watch Thanks for your amazing videos and the background history. 4 mths ago I unsubscribed to 4 historical building videos because of no info. So I was really please to find you yesterday. I just watched the Rocking Horse retirement field.( and MORE Fairy houses). Thanks Desertify.

@@terririckert7069 I can't stand people who put stickers, graffiti, or otherwise damage places. They at the least ruin the natural decay and beauty of a place. The worst are those you mention who are trying to break in. That is a hard NO for real explorers. Glad you jumped ship on that too! Thank you for sticking with it and finding us!

I've actually talked to many people from the town it is in who have no idea it exists. Forgotten is pretty open to personal interpretation. Some sites I visit nobody has recorded, but those are quite rare.

Sad this place wasn’t kept up after being sold/donated to the city or county or state because it is truly amazing and should have been preserved as a pc of history for the town to have and utilize as a hall for weddings, retreats, & other eve;to as well as for tours this could have been used to generate tons of revenue for its upkeep as well as paid the wages for the many employees who would work here to care for the place and the guests who visited vacationing in its beautiful halls : such a sad end for a beautiful old relic thanks for sharing!

Its a great piece work and history but it looks like the vandals have no sense of worth, when vandals are caught in Sicily we hand out our own justice as we are very proud of our heritage. Interesting and educational. Grazie.

Aha. I did not know this about Sicily. There is so much there to preserve, between Byzantine, Arabic, Roman, Greek, Carthaginian, Norman, Ostrogoth, Phoenicians and so many other cultural heritages. I could see why it is taken so seriously. A beautiful place to be able to live :)

Adore stone structures. What a shame the city didn’t do something before deciding to tear it down. Including the pictures from the past was wonderful. Thank you. I’m almost 70 and health isn’t great. I rely on Urbexers like yourself to let me visit places I won’t see. If you’re ever close to Gloucester VA, take time to visit Roseville Plantation. It was said to rival the Williamsburg Governours Mansion but was gutted by a fire in early 20thcentury; however the ruins have been preserved.

One day I will be 70 too (I hope) and also rely on a new generation of explorers to show me places. Perhaps ones I once visited in the past, even. I had Roseville mapped as a place to go if I get to VA. You know what I like well!

I love your work and have given many likes. I was wondering why not do some on structures not so ruinous. If I can’t at least see what they once looked like inside it’s just so much rubble even though I enjoy the history and appreciate the research. Your voice is pleasing and almost hypnotic. Welcome, Catherine. I have been doing a lot of more ruinous sites lately. The number of non ruinous ones seems to shrink with each demolition. In Scotland especially the decay seems rapid with rainfall and snow. Those with roofs left are often more modern brick structures I have less interest in. Typically very graffiti filled or trashed. Next video is a non ruined asylum, and we have a church that's in good shape too coming soon :).

Desertify Urbex: Abandoned Places thank you for the reply. You’re awesome. You probably know that a good majority of the wealthy class are Illuminati and evil. Also Freemasons and jesuits same diff. They are everywhere in Europe and America as well. I believe that is part of why all the ones abandoned. The evil is palpable in those homes and no love from anyone to keep care and restore no matter how beautiful. Murder and torture is their game. I’ve been researching and studying because these psychopaths control our world now and have been for centuries. I’d like to know their game plan. It’s not good for the normal people. I detest calling them ‘elite’. Sorry for the diatribe.

Perhaps there was at one stage, but I haven't heard of any grand plan or first attempt to use it after the last owner's death. It's a waste.

Fascinating, I understand that there are no longer masons that can replicate this ancient style of stonework. I can't recall the name of this style but would like to know what it is.

Hey, Suzan. Great question there. It was built in a faux Norman castle style, after older English fortifications. Most mansions are more ornate and use more brick and less raw field stone. It's a very unique place. We were just in Scotland and did not see a single mansion like this one.

More like a weeping giant than a stone ruin. Hill House had stood for 80 years and might stand for 80 more. Within, its walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone. At least until the city bought it and let it fall into wrack and ruin.

All the rotten building woods make the place looks dangerous and creepy. Just put on fire and burns all rotten woods into ashes so the place will look cleaner and clearer

I do think if it is to be saved or used that the wood needs to go and then the structure can be stabilized. I have seen much more far gone houses rebuilt easily in the UK and Ireland.

Thank you Debby! This is a subject that is too late to discuss nationally, as we've lost most of our historic sites. Today I rush from place to place as they are demolished. It keeps me busy, but it's tragic.
