I installed mine with the latch facing forward so I can just hop off the bike and open while standing next to the bike and don't have to walk around the back of the bike. Really handy if you need the wet weather gear in a hurry too.

I have the same racks , i drilled a small hole in the rear fender behind the square section the indicators are mounted on .Then i took the wiring through a rubber grommet . It looks a lot neater as you can't see the wiring.

Another great video. I have added hard bags to a few of my bikes. One suggestion I would offer if you have a factory hole that has no bolt in it I would run a tap thru the hole instead of the saddle bag mount bolt. This will remove the paint and the loctite will ad hear much better. Really enjoying your channel.

Non-painted, but with white *REFLECTOR STRIPS* for safety thru visibility! Flat plate aluminum is a good reflector at only one very narrow angle, that's why stealth vehicles have flat surfaces. For visual balance, put matching reflector strips on sides of jerry cans, too, plus yellow on back of panniers and on front of windscreen.

Good, informative video. Makes me wonder why other accessory manufacturers charge so much for their boxes . If I had not already fitted Shad luggage to my NC750X I would be trying to get these boxes to fit a Givi rack. That looks so nice! I want one of these bikes. Went down to my local dealer, but the salesman actually talked me out of it. I'm 6'3" and 320lbs. He said it wouldn't have enough umph for me to get up to highway speeds. Guess I'll have to wait until they get the 650 in stock. I just hope the bike isn't much heavier. I want a smaller bike I can whip around and the 400lbs of this model was pushing it as it is.

just got my Himalayan and watched your very useful video prior to installing the panniers. Other videos show panniers with locks to the front, yours are to the rear. Is it personal preference. Locks to the rear seem better idea. Ride safe !!
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 2 года назад
If you open to the front, and you're setting up camp and need to access both boxes, you are constantly going from one side of the bike to the other. If the box is open from the rear you can access both boxes from the rear of the bike. It's more convenient. Everything is more accessible. Also, if the box lid is not latched down while writing, the lid will not catch air and get yanked up. And last, in a crash I think the lids are less likely to get snagged and ripped off. Those are just my thoughts. What do you think?

@@KARMAkazeMoto Agreed about running the wires thru the old blinker mounting holes, maybe with a rubber grommet for protection. Use a single loop fastener on the side of the fender to keep it tidy. I'd look at a way to hide the turn signal wires. Drill a couple of holes somewhere and feed each wire through a rubber grommet when you get back. Not got panniers on mine (yet) mainly because I don't like the aluminium finish. Never considered painting/powder coating/wrapping them in white. Be good to see how it looks in white, but powder coating would be best, but wouldn't a whole lot of disassembly and reassemble be needed to protect the plastic parts from heat. Enjoy your ride.
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 4 года назад
For sure it would be a bit of a hassle. Would have to drill out those rivets, remove the plastic, get the powder coating done, then redo the rivets. Not sure it's worth it, but I do think it would match the bike well and make everything look more purpose-built. Thanks Jerzy!

Got a 28 day trip to France, Spain and Portugal starting in a couple of weeks, which I am doing on the Himalayan. Not decided on which luggage to use yet-soft panniers or a large waterproof roll bag? @KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 3 года назад
You've got me wondering, which component are they afraid will break if you go over that weight. Is it the plastic rotating piece that keeps the box on the cargo rack, or is it the rack itself? I have a feeling like other things with this bike, they are playing it extremely safe to ensure people don't overdo it and blame them for poor craftsmanship. I'm fairly confident for casual and highway riding without massive bumps and jarring, you could put 7-9kg in each box. That said, no one should blame me for testing that theory. 😉 Enjoy that Himalayan when you get it! Take good care of it and adhere to the service intervals.

Hey, run the lights under the taillight. I've rerouted some of my wires to under the seat including that green and red, you can probably even do it without using those extenders. There's a guy on here who had me look at his. Really simply just took the wires out to the sides, from under the finder, right near the end of the fender. Not sure how the plastic parts of the panniers would fare during the baking part of the powder coating process, I suspect they would have to be taken apart. Maybe a 2k paint (cold curing) would be better? I'm sure the folks at the powder coat place would be able to advise.
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 4 года назад
I just looked it up and Powder Coating can be cured at 350°F (176°C) so it's possible the plastic would be totally fine. But it would still need to be removed to do a good job of coating the entire box. I'm getting some interesting feedback from people though, including doing a wrap job, and yeah, there's always paint. Would be easy that way.

@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 3 года назад
Sorry to hear that. Those are crucial parts to finish the job. I didn't have it written, so I looked through archived videos. Could almost make it all out clearly, but not quite. Pulled the fender/plate hanger off the bike and took a direct look. Some of the numbers didn't print perfect, but it pretty clearly looks like P# 1040309/8. Perhaps the / was suppose to be a 7, but I don't think so. Could be 104030978. Unfortunately, I think you'll still have trouble tracking it down. On a couple of parts dealer sites, that part isn't listed, nor are the pannier racks even shown in the Himalayan parts diagrams. Not cool. Hate to be the one to say this, but you might need to procure some bolts (stainless) and wire with connectors to do the job yourself. 😬 I hope I helped you a little, or at least that you get it sorted out before any long trip.

Not a fan of the directional wires going up and under the fender. There should be a way to snake the lines back so you can use the existing holes in your fenders from the previous directional mounting.
@KARMAkazeMoto

The existing holes make it so the wires are then more out in the open. They can be kept under the fender, then directed to the sides instead kept at the center. I still haven't changed it yet, but it's easy to do and looks better. Thanks Mark!

Another great video, but those wires are very noticeable to me. I'd try to run them under the fender on each side on the backside of that rear cross member to make them less obvious. It's hard to believe RE intended them as you've installed them. As for the new boxes, just cover them with stickers of the places you've ridden to like everyone else does. They'll be covered in no time at all. Or perhaps commission a portrait of your woman to be painted on them. You stay classy Alaska. ;-)

I just picked up my black Himalayan from the dealership for the first time. They had installed the panniers and racks like I asked, but they handed me the rear rack and said "it wouldn't fit with the pannier rack and the instructions with the panniers said to take it off." What? I just watched your informative video and you didn't have that problem so I'm wondering who the tech was that did the job and why couldn't he do it right? Also, my indicator wiring is above the fender on both sides out in the open and looks awful. I'm going to have to re-do the job myself (except I had to leave the rear rack at the dealer who is 150 miles away because it wouldn't fit in the panniers!)
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 4 года назад
This is ridiculous. Considering the rear rack mounts to the same holes, it would have to work... unless the inner diameter of the rear rack is distorted. The side rack fits inside the rear rack where the bolt goes through. Even if that was the case, they could have drilled it a bit. And the wiring outside the fender? Sounds like a rush job. I hope you update me on what you find and if you end up getting it corrected.

@KARMAkazeMoto

I also thought the max weight was on the light side. I think you can carry more if you are only doing street riding, but on rough terrain, RE must be concerned about vibration and repetitive impact cracking frames. That's my guess.
