Ha! I should say that I still love the game and appreciate the insane amount of work put into it. There's still a lot of ways to improve it, so I hope R* sticks with it. Until then, it's just fun to dive into the historical accuracy and learn a bit in the process.
Never happen, Rockstar is too busy still playing around with a 7 year old GTA 5 online portion of the game instead of updating a game that isn’t even 2 years old yet.
@@Dankmemeslover69 thats because its easy to make money in red dead online even when rockstar nerfed the animals in many ways (cougar spawns and pelt worth ect) so since people make money in the game they dont need to buy gold bars, maybe if your a beginning but if your a veteran on day 1 like me then you most likely have over 60k and 300 gold bars and nothing to buy in the game at the moment, which basically means IF ROCKSTAR DOES NOT SEE MONEY IN THE GAME ITS WORTHLESS TO THEM AND THEY LEFT THE GAME IN A BROKEN STATE AS IF THE GAME WAS AN ABANDON UNDERWATER CITY. gta on the otherhand they got some jimmy neutrons to work on how to fuck the job payout and over price things so people other glitch the boil glitch or whatever the fuck its called or they buy shark cards.
I made 21 million from that Lester glitch and ill never spend another buck on that game. If r* wants us GTA glitchers irl money they better up the rdo content.
@@FreeAimDog the casino heist DLC for gta and the moonshine business in RDR, came out at the same time. that says to me that Rockstar is working on big updates for both games, but since millions of people would rather fly MK2s and drive supercars and fire explosive sniper rounds with thermal goggles....GTA seems to be the money maker. so my point is...it isnt Rockstars fault that Red Dead isnt as popular as GTA...it is the culture of the times. Faster, Louder, more booms and quicker mass murders. Red Dead is juuuuuust a bit more of a Niche game than GTA. Amazingly beautiful, hilarious at times (go get drunk in the moonshine shack and then fk around in there....if you havent seen what i mean, you will, and you will laugh hysterically. Especially if you smoke a joint first...or an equivalent 😉)
Loved it! It would be cool to explore the Trader Role or the Collector Role. Seeing as how lucrative the rewards are in game. Obviously the money earned is exaggerated. It would be cool to learn about famous Traders and Collectors of the West. Anyways, excellent video. Keep up the great content.
Man vs. History uh ohhhh, he’s only on this episode because where ever you’re hiding in the woods, you’re making boat loads of Moonshine 💀🤣 also try not to fight your grandma after a few sips 😪
@@vedrannikolic4278 The video was pulled, but I'll be putting it back up at some point. Here's a link to an article on it though... www.theengineer.co.uk/february-1896-the-gun-bike/
Reference to the "raid a competitor" mission: The Hatfield-McCoy feud really started and continued over the sales territory between two moonshining factions
Great one as always! Have you thought about making a video on the different factions in the game? How accurate were the O'Driscolls or Del Lobo or the mountain cannibals? Or the wolf man in the cave, stuff like that. You definitely deserve more subs man
Man vs. History anytime brother a man like you sharing awesome content and knowledge about history deserves good I’ll be sharing your videos with my friends and on my social media. Keep it up brotha
The people that got blinded by Moonshine might have created Wood Alcohol by mistake, as it is very toxic and can cause blindness. This is a result of over Distiling alcohol from Ethanol (Normal Drinking Alcohol) to Methanol (Wood Alcohol) this was probably why most of those affected were the Moonshiners themselves as very few would want to sell poison to their customers as you want them to be alive for a continous income.
1:10 - The irony is, not too long later during Prohibition, the American government decided to fight illegal consumption of alcohol that was not rated or meant for human consumption by having "additives" put into the alcohol. Starting in 1926, the U.S. government started mandating that alcohol that was being produced, but not the same amount that was allowed for human consumption, was to have ether, acetone, methyl alcohol (wood alcohol) and other harmful chemicals added to it in order to stop people from drinking it. Only... that didn't happen. During New Years Day 1927 at New York's Bellevue Hospital alone, 41 people were killed by such tainted spirits. It's unclear how many died specifically from the additives, but the estimates go to over 10,000 at the highest.
My great grandfather was moonshiner during the mid 1900s, until the 1980's down here in latin-america. It's still a pretty common practice on the country-side.
hey, I was right, thought it was moonshine on the community post, great video, my suggestion for the next one is the trading role, where you give cripps a carcass or pelt, he breaks it down and exports it to buyers for the price of 100 goods being about 600 dollars, thanks again, also will be joining your patron. Nice ending as well😁
I feel like RDR Online is full of these missed opportunities (maybe they are on purpose so they can add them as a DLC or rockstar just didnt know) and its such a shame. In my 250 hours of playing RDR Online my camp got raided only once! I do hope rockstar does expand these roles. Suggestions you made here for the moonshiner role sound fun!
@Jack Scott I've been attacked probably around 5 times or so. Basically you get an alert that your camp is being raided and to high tail it back. When you arrive you'll see some guys sneaking up trying to grab pelts and run off. Nothing amazing, but it's fun. I didn't really say it in the video (in hindsight I wish I had), but the moonshiner role needs to have paranoia as it's central identity. Historically these operations were attacked by rival moonshiners, law enforcement, and even WTCU ladies. You had to constantly be on guard. If your still was discovered you had to pick up and move the entire operation. Plus, if you decided to deliver it you had to take all sorts of precautions to hide it. I don't feel any of that in the role.
@@ManvsHistory oh my god they really need to give you a job at rockstar because your ideas are so well thought out and would make the game feel so rich. I agree with you on that very much as well, I thought moonshining would feel a lot more shady and touch on the outlaw side of the game. but i just go to the shack, pay the start up cost and deliver it with no consequences. their roles have to interact more with the world instead of being so mission/timer based
Ha! Awesome, Sean! Unfortunately the archival research portion takes so long that I can't churn out more than a video per week. But things will hum along faster as I learn the ropes and get more into the routine. Anyway, glad you're enjoying the vids, buddy!
@@ManvsHistory i can understand that, for each video you must have to go through pages and pages of news articles and other things just to get the needed info. Its like making a presentation, its impossible to get it donne in a couple days, honestly i think your doing a great job on a video per week.

I don't understand how you don't have millions of subscribers, you put so much effort into your videos and they're so amazing. Keep up the great work brother
I'm telling you, perfesser, these videos of yours are some of the most fun history lessons I've seen in awhile. I've long been a student of history, but you routinely inspire me to reinvestigate this particular period. Thanks, and keep the lessons coming.
One of these days your videos are going to take off. It's incredible how much effort you put into these short 10 to 15 minute videos, keep at it! I can't wait to see more.
Appreciate you noticing, Ghettly! That's also the downside... the research takes so long that I can't get more than one video out per week. Really appreciate the support though, man!
know this is about moonshine, but, "it was nowhere near the pandemic the government made it out to be". "It was less about concerns over public health and more about taxes the government was missing out on". Sounds familiar.
nother thing I forgot to mention is make your videos 10 min or longer, it could be 10:01 long as long its over 10min, gets you video recommended more because apparently having a 1min video would have the same recommendation of a 9 min video, not sure exactly why but if you really want to extend a video, you could put bloopers or just a black screen. Liking the vids
I only recently discovered you can get through the checkpoints. I never thought it would work because of how blatantly on display the jugs are in the wagon.
man this series is so popular you already have more views than subs in a week glad this series is becoming so popular love your content so underrated keep it up man.
See, my ancestors sibling did the moonshine business in 1861, there were into it and in my family until 1927 when the Mafia "purchased" our still, and we had not touched the stuff since. :) But our shine was of fiddleheads, potatoes, pepper, yeast, salt, herbs, Tabasco. Hell of a mix. Sadly my great great grandmother took the mix amounts with her to her grave in 2016.
I don't know if you can see it online but under the general store in strawberry there is a hidden moonshine operation that you can actually rob in story mode after looking through the basement window
Really enjoyed the video, and learned a bit about Moonshining. I've have been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 for almost a year now, and I have always been hoping Rockstar would fix a few things such as giving us straight gunbelts! Also really liked your banjo playing. Keep up the good work.
Now I wanna see you play those ukulele songs that dude up in butchers creek is usually playing. PS: If you deliver moonshine and you see revenue agents blocking the road, you can just drive on through. If you come close, they will tell you to get move on and dont shoot on sight (at least in the times where I have tried it). Saves some time on the delivery
You helped shed some light for me, on The Moonshiner role in Red Dead. I'm getting to that point of upgrades but, only for my still for now. I've been pondering the thought of the bar but didn't see much point in it now. ...the still is all that matters... I think to this day, certain people have a huge disdain for government, sticking it's nose in everyone's buisness. And that fuels individuals to continue to 'enterprise by moonlight'. As always, your vids are informative and fun to learn by. Love the fact that a professor plays the same game as a bunch of us do, for the simple reasons of the time period, some historical accuracy and it's just plain fun. Thanks and 'Keep' em coming!' ...yup, sticking with the liquor...😂
@@ManvsHistory I absolutely LOVE your content and was so happy to be able to support you in another way!! Can't wait to see your channel grow and develop. 😁❤️
Something to remember is even today a good lump (25%) of alcohol consumed is "illict", thought that can mean anything from rock gut moonshine to smuggled fine wine, or defying religious based prohibitions.
Thank you for making my request a reality. I'm glad I live in a place where I can buy all the moonshine and fireworks I want all year round. I hope your patreon does really well man I'll keep watching and upvoting your videos aslong as you keep making them. Have a blessed day.
One thing about a moonshine still explosion, unless we are talking a truly exceptional operation, the still would be FAR smaller than a commercial operation.
Agreed. It's plausible that moonshiner still explosions were minimal, or even somehow avoided, as (like I said) I couldn't find a single recorded instance from 1880-1905- the years I searched the archives.
7:50 So, my idea that we should be hiding our moonshine inside of our trader wagon deliveries is historically accurate? I always felt it strange that Moonshiner requires Trader to be leveled a little bit but there was nothing actually tying the roles together outside of Cripps creeping up Maggie. I was hoping we'd build Cripps a Tannery improving his efficiency, hide the moonshine business under the tannery so the smell (and Cripps) could detour any suspicion and desire to investigate. Then use our perfectly legitimate business endeavor from the tannery delivery to hide the moonshine and make an extra stop to offload the shine with no suspicion. Of course I'd also like to own our own saloon or even hotel. Where Cripps can set aside some meat from our animals for meals, Maggie brings in the shine.. all while we take in passive revenue from these and room rentals. Toss in a gambling role with a card shark main NPC that we can hire on to ensure the house always wins, and we'll be rich! XD
The improvements that you suggest in this video are so easy to implement. Take what you already have and expand on it. There are already revenue agent checkpoints, introduce a bribe system and have them wave us through... Literally a week of a job at most for rockstar. When we pay to have a bar in our moonshine shack, send $25 to our post office to collect each day as our share of the profits. It’s so sad that rockstar waste their time on stupid shit like the naturalist role, and an extra 10 ranks of bounty Hunter rewards... WE STILL DONT HAVE A COWBOY ROLE ON A WILD WEST GAME! It’s ridiculous
I was thinking about the fences in the main game. I’d never heard the term before playing rdr2. Don’t know what historical info is out there is on this criminal profession, but that might make an interesting video. Were there actual horse and wagon fences? How did it actually work? You could also tie in horse and cattle rustling. Looking forward to your future videos!
I can't answer your questions about fences in the past, but I can say that there are modern day fences for stolen goods but less and less as time goes on.
Idk when the term came about, but it was used in the 1950's. There was a female fence in NYC in the 1870's(?) I believe she did get caught, briefly, got away with most of the cash too.
Sure, British Online Archives (Paid), Library of Congress Online Archives (Free), NYT Archives (Pay), JSTOR (Pay- unless you're a student/faculty at a college), books.
I like the moonshiner role because it's a relatively simple, guaranteed way to make money, but especially because I come from a family of moonshiners (though more post-Prohibition days than 1890s). I do wish Rockstar would do more with the role. I bought the bar size upgrades specifically because I thought it would allow me to make some money from customers, but of course Rockstar would never allow us to make money that easily.
Yeah that's the big downsize of making a game that uses real money. They have to keep nerfing anything that's too profitable. Turns things into a grind, imo.
Funny story about the blindness: that came from people badly cooking it, meaning that none of the methanol (non drinkable alcohol) which could cause blindness
Holy shit all your recommendations for the moonshine shack are great but sadly I doubt rockstar will ever implement them. Although I hope they prove me wrong. Especially with bribing the revenue agents. I've been wanting that feature for a while now.
im watching your back catalogue since i only just found you. loving every thing i hear and see. it brings more life to my love of the game. what about the horses and the tack making a good subject. totally a missed opportunity for rockstar with all the wild horses out there waiting to be caught tamed and sold.
Thank you for the Patreon pledge, Spark! Too kind! Yeah, it's a common misconception. Moonshine was usually just whiskey that skipped the barrel-aging process. Nothing about it is illegal- just the fact that the distiller was unlicensed and taxes weren't paid on the finished product. The government wanted that money, so they really cracked down on these illicit operations.
