When was the first tram in our metropolis or where did the first bus go? And why do we get off the metro on the right at Hlavac? Find out in this episode of our Living Prague series.
The very beginnings of public transport in Prague date back to 1829, when the first horse-drawn omnibus line started running between Malá Strana and the Old Town. Further development did not take long:
- The first tram (still horse-drawn) started on 23 September 1875 from Invalidovna to today's Štefánik Bridge.
- František Křižík was behind the first electric tram - he put it into operation in 1891 and it ran from the Letná cable car to Výstaviště. Lines to Vysočany, Vinohrady, Žižkov and Košíř followed.
- The first bus started on 7 March 1908 and connected Malostranské náměstí with Pohořelec. However, after a year the line was cancelled due to high failure rate.
- In 1925, buses started operating between Vršovice and Záběhlice, and in the following years more buses were added, for example to Modřany or Zbraslav.
- The first trolleybus in Prague ran on 29 August 1936, from Střešovice to St. Matěj Church. In 1959, the trolleybus network was 57 km long, but this type of transport was abolished in the capital in 1972.
- In 2022, trolleybuses returned to Prague - running from Palmovka to Čakovice, with more to follow. Trolleybuses are planned from Smíchov to Jinonice and from Veleslavín to the airport.
- The metro first started running on 9 May 1974 on line C, between Florence and Kačerov. Interestingly, Prague did not envisage a metro at first and trams were supposed to run underground. The first stop of this "underground" started to be built in 1967 at the Main Railway Station, but then the city reconsidered the plan. The underground tram stop is the reason why we still get off the metro at the Main Station on the right in the direction of travel.
