Classic Serena comeback! Most hate the ESPN commentary of this match, however, that made me appreciate the match even more, since Serena shut them up. Here are some gems from the ESPN team:
Serena's technique on the forehand is "really, really bad." She also called her forehand "ragged." ~ Mary Carillo
Sharapova's second serve is superior to Serena's. ~ Mary Carillo
"This kid's better." ~Mary Carillo referring to Sharapova in comparison to Serena.
Venus has "HORRIBLE" technique on the serve & forehand. ~ Pam Shriver
Serena "doesn't have faith, she doubts herself on the court." ~ MJ Fernandez
"Sharapova is totally in the head of Serena Wiliiams, she doesn't know to handle her mentally or physically." ~ Pam Shriver
Dick Enberg & Mary Carillo calling some of Serena's shots "lucky".
"If you can't beat her, hit her" ~ Mary Carillo
Of course they stopped talking sh!t once Serena fought back to take the second set. Although that didn't stop Carillo from saying that she still believes Sharapova is the better even after Serena beat her. LOL. And for the record, I have nothing against Sharapova.

One of the best matches at the australian open to this day…..I always say that Venus and Serena are the real #1 and #2 at their best…with Justine as #3, but when Sharapova was playing like this, I always thought she was #3….I'll give Henin the 3rd spot with her 2007 year….she was amazing….still…..Venus and Serena's game at their best is simply SCARY…they changed tennis and EVERYONE feared them.

Mary Carillo's racism is DISGUSTING! Some people think racism involves making a racial slur and being overt. However, Carillo is careful not to use racial slurs but her bigotry and hatred for Serena Williams is easy for the eye to see. I am so proud of Serena in this match to come back from three match points and find a way to win.

Sharapovas blood curdling screams were just ridiculous. I don't know how any opponent can take all that noise? Why the commentators don't talk about how distracting Sharapovas screams are?

Love, love, love the fact in the original telecast at 6-2, 5-3 Sharapova, Carillo said that serena was good but "this kid's just better." she was eating her words & could barely look at the camera straight when the commentators were discussing Serena's epic comeback in the end. Classic!

Don't see how they were right about much, though. Serena's forehand back then did have its faults, but to say it's "really, really bad" and "ragged" is a huge exaggeration. They were expecting her forehand to let her down in the 3rd but her forehand is what saved her. Maria's 2nd serve was never better than Serena's, in fact Serena hit more return winners this match than Maria, including down match point. Maria has never been "better" than Serena at anything besides shrieking like a banshee.

And Serena was still mourning the untimely death of her beloved sister during Wimbledon 2004 AND Serena was coming off of a long injury break during which she'd experienced depression over her sister's death.

Wow I was having a bad day, but seeing two of my favorite players (Venus excluded, she's my absolute favorite) play each other is awesome. Maria was playing phenomenal on this match, but again, Serena added something more. Like she's done time and time and time again. A living legend.

Well said. That's what I like best about Serena, her incredible intensity and mental strength. I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but I loved the rage to win, refusal to lose, to not be bettered mentality she played with in this match. Serena is clearly emotionally fragile at times (French Open 2012) and emotionally volcanic at others (US Open 2009, 2011), but she's the best thing in women's tennis. When she plays her best (Miami 2013 SFs), it's heaven for me! When she plays, I watch.

Serena and Maria played a fabulous match in that semi-final. The match reminded me of what both are able to bring to the court. There was something so exciting in women's tennis during that period. I look forward to Serena's full recovery from her injury and from her US Open 2011 disappointment. I am hoping Maria can regain her form. Lately, Maria has been beating herself. But, she still hangs in there, and I believe she still has the goods.

No you are wrong tennis isn't about who "should have won" it is about the end result and Sharapova lost. Serena won the match because she was BOLD in the critical moments fighting off the three match points. Serena is mentally tougher than Maria and a superior tennis player. Only because Maria is white and blonde the USA racist tennis establisment hypes that blonde bimbo.

@holderica I showed Serena saving all three match points and breaking back for 5-5. And I also showed Serena saving two break points at 6-6 from 15:14 to 15:34. You can see the scoreboard pop-up revealing that they were break points.
@swissmaestro45
@swissmaestro45 11 лет назад
Sharapova was lucky to serve for the second set. Serena has a break point at 4-3 and Sharapova hit a forehand wide that was ruled good. That point is missing from these highlights because it was cut off but you can see it other uploaded highlights from this match. And the remainder of Serena's 2005 has nothing to do with this match. None of Serena's wins over Maria are flukes in any context, unlike Maria's over Serena's.

In Maria's defense, this was only her second career major semifinal and it happened to be against Serena Williams, a multiple grand slam champion. Maria simply got tight when faced with the idea of those 3 match points, Serena saw this, took advantage, and came back like a true champion.

A couple of things: -Venus and Serena didn't have the best forehand technique. They strongly improved during 2007-2009, which many believe to be their most important years. Venus' second serve and forehand were simply bad for much of her early career. I think what Pam was saying was that Venus' technique was horrible for someone of her historic stature. And a lot of the tennis commentary here is accurate. Venus and Serena are my all time favorites, but everyone has flaws.

It makes my skin crawl when Americans blatantly support foreign opponents (a Russian no less) under the guise of 'balance', 'fairness' etc. when it's directed at African-Americans. The two commentators for this match are a disgrace - of course they'd deny that they were being racist - but racism like their's in insidious and canny. They were obviously disappointed that their compatriot won the match. Disgusting racists. Anybody who thinks otherwise is at best naive, or even worse complicit.

It is nauseating to listen to the commentary of two Americans clearly backing the opponent (a Russian no less) rather than one of their own. It sickens me when Americans pretend to be uber patriotic - unless of course you happen to be African-American. They both should be ashamed of themselves - despicable behaviour.

Should have been a win for Maria? No, I don't think so. The person who wins the last point is who *should* have been the winner. Now, if you change that comment to *could* have been a win for Maria, I'd agree with you. Sharapova had the opportunity to win, but clearly she lost to a far more determined, athletic, and to my mind, better tennis player.

She has never been much of a fan of Serena. She was leading the parade for the crowning of Maria after she beat Serena in 2004. Since that time, Serena has won 8 grand slam singles titles, Maria has won 3. I like Maria, but she doesn't have that dominance in her that Serena possesses, and Venus (still sorry for her having that auto immune disease) had at times in the past. I still look back and smile, because they all wanted Maria to be the one to put an end to Serena's run.

Mary Carillo always antgonizes Serena and Venus. How is Serena's forehand technique ragged? I like Pam Shriver for the most part and I love Mary Joe Fernandez. Mary Joe seems to be the least biased towards anyone and I really enjoy her commentary. Dick Enberg is ok. He really did seem to be for Maria in this match. I believe he just got caught up in the Maria hype. Cliff Drysdale and Pam Shriver usually go at it.

@db200508 That is mental strength though, the ability to be calm. That's one thing that Sharapova has NEVER had really. She is a great fighter, but she doesn't know how to stay calm enough when someone seriously asks questions of her. This was the first of what turned out to be many signs of that. Being a great fighter doesn't automatically equal being mentally tough, but being calm certainly does equal to that.

What I don't get is why people can't see Sharapova's value. yes, Serena is better than Maria in many departments like volleying, serving and running but they are both mentally strong players, the strongest players actually. What intrigues me is why Maria seems to be a completely different player every time she plays Serena. I don't know but I think she doesn't believe she can actually beat Serena, not that she doesn't have the guns to do so, but because after this loss, it really affected her.

I think that Mary Carillio should be ashamed of herself, Has she looked at the Head to Head result behind these two recently because Serena has a 13-2 Head to Head record against Maria, It was 2004 since the last time maria beat serena, Serena is just a league ahead of her, Mary has the cheek to say this kid is better HAHA, That woman does not know anything about tennis if she think Maria is better than Serena.
@ChessboyJohnny
@ChessboyJohnny 11 лет назад
Up until that point Maria was 'just better' though, that matchpoint was a gift from Maria. We all know Serena is the best comeback player and she really turned it around, but I think at that point Maria was the better player in terms of form. Obviously if you look at their careers as a whole Serena is way out of her league, and the talk about her technique is plain ignorant

Some people talk about Serena's atitude. Could crappy commentations may be the reason for her atitude? Serena is a great competitor. Sometimes i also wonder could this be one of the reasons why Serena hasn't played much Fed Cup because of these ridiculous commentary? Thirtteen Major Titles and that's not counting the other titles outside the majors. She had bad calls that went against her during Justine Henin 2003 French and Jennifer Caprati 2004 US Open, which she had right to show emotion.

I love how Serena manages to shut these clearly biased commentators up. Sharapova is a really good player and pretty and all, but she's not better than Serena.
