Hi & Nyob Zoo All!
Today is a very special video for you all. I just recently came back from my hometown and we received so many packed meals from our relatives. I’ve forgotten how much I’ve missed eating this. Why is it so good? It’s all about Love. So I wanted to show you all how to make a classic Hmong style packed lunch either for your loved ones or for when you're on the road.
In the Hmong culture, packing food for your relatives from afar is a way to show your respects & love. Traveling anywhere in particular (solo or with family), is also when you’ll see packed meals being made. The fun part is that sometimes the lunches are different depending on who makes it. Sometimes you’ll get a packet of smoked beef with rice, bbq chicken, rice with bacon, beef jerky, and the list goes on. If there’s rice, pepper, and some type of protein, the meal is complete. Oh and don’t forget water! 😉
I’m always happy when I receive a packed meal like this. And I’m always happy to give in return. So learning how and knowing what to pack should be on your to do list because food is loveeee. So I hope you all treat your loved ones with this meal and make it for them. As always, happy cooking! :)
** Yes Yes! We ended up eating this meal since we had no one to give it to and nowhere to go ;)
With love,
-Cindy Her

The most sustainable & environmental friendly way to source whole brown hens is to raise your own. Like my dad, who still raises chickens. He will butcher his hens, cook it, and pack it for our relatives. Home grown-farm raised chickens are best to use because the meat is much leaner but super rich in flavor since they’ve been well taken care of. If you can source any local farm raised brown hens, I highly recommend it. If you can’t, by all means, you can buy frozen brown range chicken from your local asian grocery store. It will be located in the freezer section or in the fridge at the meat section.

Omg!! This brought back embarrassing memories of my mom packing me lunch for field trips. I remember one time the Hmong aide commenting about how good my food smelled. I was embarrassed back then, but now that I'm much older, I miss those packed lunches very much lol.

Thank you, Mom Her, for showing us the love with which you pack a meal for wayfaring friends and family. Watching you and Cindy work reminded me of relatives sending my own family on our way with a basket of food in 1950’s America before the advent of interstate highways when road trips were long and expensive. I always enjoy visiting your channel and thank you for never sending me on my way without a basketful of Hmong goodness.

Can you do a video regarding tips and tricks on how to cut a freshly killed chicken into edible pieces? I'm always having trouble with that during hmong events that requires boil chickens. My cuts are not clean so I always get an ear full from the elders. Thanks.

This is so different for me growing up. All my life my relatives never packed me pepper and I've never included pepper in any of my packed meals for my relatives. My mom and grandma always told me packing pepper is like giving them negativity on their journey back home. And I didn't know people still wrap chicken and rice in banana leaves 😆 I thought only our great great grandparents did it 😅 Lots of interesting differences.

Hi, Can you explain why you soak the sticky rice in hot water? Do that make the rice more soft and how many hours min or max should you let the rice soak to make it soft?Also after adding the hot water do you cover and leave it out at room temperature before cooking or put it in the fridge? Sorry for asking so much question! I can never make my sticky rice soft lol! PS. Last question, I promise lol! I was wondering how will you clean the bamboo steamer without it turn moldy? Do you wash it right after cooking the rice with soap and water or just water and let it hang dry? Thanks you so much for your response! Looking forward to more recipes from you!!
@CHerCreations
@CHerCreations 2 года назад
Soaking the rice gives moisture so it doesn't harden when it's cooking. It also releases excess starches and reduce cooking time. If you want to eat the sticky rice the day of I like to soak in hot tap water for at least 3 hrs. I cover and leave at room temp. Do not put it in the fridge. After using the bamboo steamer, clean it well with water and soap. Let it air dry completely on your dish rack before storing it away. Any moisture will cause it to mold. Hope that helps
