undertale celeste and hollow knight are perfect examples of not needing a giant amount of employees and major company backing you up to make a great game.
The hilarious part is how he talks shit about the charm that allows him to heal faster, and proceeds to get shit on by every boss every time he goes to heal. Lmao
Its actually crazy how often this exact scenario happens with this game. I bought it on sale, played it for 45 minutes, got bored, and didn't touch it for like, 8 months. Came back, and then it became my favorite game of all time.
yeah i really wonder why... i got the game back in 2019, played it for around 2 hours and then just kinda fell off of it. came back to it around a month ago and it's one of my favourite games of all time, got to 111% already
Yep. For me it was the map. I was foolish enough to think that i can easily navigate without really relying on it. On my second try, once I understood that map is vital for my understanding of game's progression, everything became much more enjoyable, because i knew at least 2-4 paths where to explore to actually make some progress.
For me it was the main goal. I didn't get that in order to progress, I have to find and kill the 3 dreamers, so I got stuck and didn't play for months. Came back and now it's one of my favorite games of all time. Also got the opportunity to translate the game to portuguese, which was a great experience.
The start is kinda slow progression wise. You don't get the cool stuff until later, so I think that plays a good part of why people don't get invested early in hollow knight. You can't stop playing it after a while though.
According to steam, my first playthrough of Hollow Knight took me 50 hours. that's without following any guides but still, watching Charlie beat it in an hour has me wondering if I'm retarded.
@@wizardo9226 I know someone corrected you but the best speedrun is 32 minutes, you think someone can beat it plus alot of extra content in under double the time while casually playing your first playthrough?
It’s fun watching Charlie get destroyed by the parkour that took me a few tries yet watching him destroy bosses in two attempts that took me 10+ attempts
@@antman7673 My dude...it is a bit. A bit that Charlie's been doing for about fifteen years now. Nothing's being "played off as a joke". He is joking.
Anyone interested in the lore of hallow knight here's a little tidbit about no eyes at 45:12 they were a great warrior of hallow nest but retired to become a care taker of children. Once the infection started spreading through hallow nest she gouged out the eyes of the children she was looking after and then her own eyes in an effort to prevent them from becoming infected. This worked however without their eyesight they weren't able to protect the children from the infected and they died overcome with guilt they were unable to defend themselves from the infected and fell to them as well Edit: I may be missing a couple pieces of information but as far as I know that's their story
@@Korophyl I'm pretty sure no eyes was wasn't a character made by a supporter, I could be wrong but the context between the area where you fight them and what they say when you talk to them doesn't leave much else to explain it
Charlie is such an impatient gamer lol I never expected to see him play a metroidvania. But it makes sense he would use the chat to avoid the exploration part if that's not what he is into. Plus the sheer number of times he died just by dashing straight into an enemy...

It’s only kinda sad when he plays horror games, cuz he is very funny and it’s entertaining but at the same time he’s streaming so there’s no actual horror to the games anymore. Still entertaining, just not what those game devs intended when making those titles
I couldn't finish this game, I got about 80% there but I just don't have the reflexes anymore and I've never been good at 2D side-scrollers, but I loved every minute I played of it, the music and atmosphere especially are amazing
Im glad you got to enjoy it in spite of not being able to finish the game. It really is great, but I also understand that not everyone who plays games has the reflexes necessary to beat some of the more reflex and pattern-recognition based ones like HK.
if i had a nickel for every time a twitch stream jumped blind into hollow knight, was unexpectedly gifted first try, and proceeded to spend hours grinding soul tyrant underpowered until they won, i'd have 10 cents, which isn't alot , but its still weird that it happened twice.
@@lynx4082 Have you heard of the famous youtuber known as MoistCritikal/Penguinz0? He has this little thing called humor that you might not have heard about. It's okay if you haven't heard of this as it's more of a myth or legend than a real thing, so don't sweat it.
The fact that you got void heart before your second dreamer really reminded me how much freedom Teach Cherry gave us on where we want to go or what we want to get first. HK is definitely one of my favorite games of all time
Charlie: Beats Lost Kin in a few attempts Also Charlie: Dies to Marmu Note: I've never said Lost Kin is extremely hard. It's more of a gatekeeper to the good bosses and it happens to be my personal favorite. Marmu is just easy, no matter the conditions, it never has been difficult under any circumstances (and believe me, after seeing some of the replies and after testing the different arenas in godhome and different builds etc I can still say it's easy as can be. Weird it's almost as if it's just not hard.)
This is such a good game, I didn't get what everyone loved about it until I tried it for myself. Hollow Knight is one of the only games I've played where I was sad that its over
Always warms my heart when people play hollow knight for the first time. Even five years down the line, it's still the gold standard for what indie games can accomplish.
I really love the radiance bc yes it really throws a LOT of movement challenges on you but the entire game has been preparing you to fight movement challenges so it's not a cheap tactic for difficulty
@@vilkristproductions6772 I've liked his videos for a while, but insulting hollow knight is an unforgiveable crime, unless you take it back and enjoy the game, which he did. I can rest easily now.

Such a good game! The overall ambience is just near perfection, such as when you first enter the city of tears the music and tone is just this mellow yet dreading feel. It's just so simple and good in the cleanest way possible, the music and art is just straight feels. This game is a perfect example of a person who created something who truly cared about what they were making, only someone with that level of passion can create something so addictively embracing and make it seem effortless.
@@ReeversUhHuh honestly the hollow Knight discord kinda sucks. One of the things I hate most about it is the memes channel. All of the memes are just reposts over and over and over, and they won’t even let you talk in that channel like wtf. How can any humor develop if they won’t let you talk?
My favourite part of the game is still the fact that one of if not the hardest parts of the game gives you a 2 second cutscene that gives very vague implications in the lore
@@invigale well lets look at what we know, The Hollow Knight was successful in containing the Radiance even if was only temporary. We have no idea how long the HK was locked up for after containing the Radiance, however we do now that it didn’t break out soon after due to the memorials of the HK and the Dreamers sacrifice which must have taken some time to build. We also know that bugs traveled to the black egg to pray.
Hollow Knight is easily my favourite game of all time, it was an absolute blast to see Charlie play through it! The man is also truly a god gamer - I cannot believe the challenges he beat without basically any endgame equipment, huge congrats! :D
If there is one game that I could forget and have the pleasure of experiencing again, it would be hollow knight. This game will forever have a special place in my heart, it is truly the best game I have ever played
@@Johngamer2418 I +100% it with keyboard. It's not bad, you'll get used to it. Edit: also did path of pain. Tho never tried with gamepad so I can't compare
charlie doing the last room of path of pain without using the upper saw at the end and taking only one hit from the two kingsmoulds without using spells was honestly incredible
The path of pain really does just imprint the movement of hollow knight into your soul. I've done it twice and i think i could still be as good after not playing it for a while
They should take all the time they could possibly need to make it as good as they want it to be. I appreciate people not rushing their work in harm to the quality.
@@JoaoVictor-fq6hz It ended up sending the fandom into the same state that titanfall's suffered. Everyone's just pretending the game already released. Although if Team Cherry were to shadowdrop it now, it would probably take a while for people to realize "oh shit, it's ACTUALLY out"
Dude in all seriousness, I'm legit blown away by Charlie's skill for this game. Ive beaten this game 3 times now and I still have never beat the path of pain, This dude does it first playthough in just over an hour and calls it overrated. Like damn lol plus he beat Soul Tyrant & NKG in just a couple tries, Tbh i couldnt even beat them my first playthough. I'm seriously impressed, Glad he gave this game another chance.
If you’ve played other platforming games a lot the POP isn’t really as hard as people make it out to be. Especially if you’ve already played Celeste. That being said, I died like 15 times to the Watcher Knights and Nosk on my first play through so I clearly have my weaknesses. And Pure Vessel/NKG absolutely kick my ass.
@@kazu68 While hiveblood is a good choice for PoP, there are still better options. You will need combat charms for the end, and you may not have enough slots due to the huge cost of hiveblood. Let's not even mention how terrible it is outside of that area.
I suck at this game BIG TIME, but I still love it to pieces. It's so well-designed, a magnificent soundtrack, beautiful art style, intriguing lore--it's got it all. Can't wait for Silksong!
I know he fought it early but I never really got why people find failed champion hard I beat him first try as he is just a faster first boss and even am relieved to see him in pantheons because it means I get full free health
Seeing charely die to marmu because he couldnt dodge due to thorns of agony pained me. I never personally use that charm because of the frames it takes that could be used for dodging.
Love how he picks up hollow knight one day and immediately goes for all the dream bosses on one nail upgrade, longnail and compass. When even I struggle on dream bosses with fully upgraded nail and spells, 7 masks and as many charm notches as I can get my hands on. A true gamer.
Hollow Knight's soundtrack is so soul-crushingly beautiful. It captures the game's sullen and magical world perfectly for me. Playing this game for the first time was like the feeling of teenage love, a feeling that this jaded and curmudgeon adult has missed profoundly. Bravo
Would've loved to see him actually read stuff but nonetheless glad to see him actually play it, and do so well! Hollow Knight deserves all the praise it can get!
@@BurndiL tbf you have to immerse yourself in the world to enjoy it, plus the are just the best clips which are rarely reading dialogue, because it’s less epic
Dream bosses are late game and it's insane to me that you attempted any of them with only 3 charm notches and anything but the true nail. I recently beat soul tyrant and I have a crazy build on top of the best nail
It's cheap and amazing and available on all consoles and comes with all 4 free DLC and has a large fan base for an indie game with lots of speedrunners, challenge runners, and content creators. Literally the easiest money I've ever spent. Ori and the Blind Forest felt like a rip off since I played Hollow Knight first.
I feel like this and the boss designs are why this game gets so many Dark Souls comparisons. Its very rare to play a game with an atmosphere so haunting and beautiful
One of, if not, the greatest indie game out there. The passion, the love, the hand drawn animations, this game has so much that just comes all together and becomes a masterpiece. God, I love this game, happy Charlie finally played it
Yeah, because a new player is totally going to be doing pogos and advanced movement during a boss fight on their very first playthrough of the game. 😂 What even is this comment?
Seeing him shred through these bosses really makes me feel ashamed. To be fair, hollow knight was my first game, so maybe that was why it was hard for me.
Having hollow knight as a first game is such a strange concept to me, I forget there are people who haven't been gaming their whole lives, an amazing choice tho, and it's a hard game for everyone, don't worry about it.
@@yeetyeetpotatoskeet7948 aside from kirby, hk was one of my first platformers, i sucked ass at it at first but after nearly 650 hours of nonstop dying i think im pretty good at it it made me feel ashamed as well, i died 15+ times to nearly every post broken vessel boss tbh, just got to remember that 1. charlie is incredibly good at games 2. you learn your own strategies and take as much time as you need to beat a boss, just because someone is better than you doesn't make you bad hell, if you manage to beat the game in the first place your already better than a LOT of people
@@zytheabsolutenerd75 Dude, you are not alone 🥺. Thought I played a lot of video games. The catharsis that I felt while playing hollow knight. Straight up made me buy From Software games. And now I’m suffering playing Demon Souls and Bloodborne, and pain hasn’t feel so much better after playing actual souls like games. They are just too good!

just as bug enjoyer alone i knew i would adore hollow knight when i first heard of it, but i was so so surprised by the depth and beauty of it. easily became my favorite game
I love how he said the hardest bit is the platforming, not the "actual gameplay". it's a platformer, that's meant to be the hard bit too just like the fights
I haven’t played this game in a long time. When he got damaged in white palace, I reacted as if I was the one playing and then got anxious when he was close to getting hit again. When I saw those wall of flying daggers again for the first time in in his fight against the radiance, I had flashbacks to my very numerous pitiful rage filled attempts against AbsRad. The sight of those daggers slowly heading to the left literally activated a memory buried deep within my soul and my brain/subconscious instantly labeled it as some vietnam war flashback.
I always thought people were joking about saw PTSD but when i got to the section with the moving spikes in path of pain i understood why. Worst 2 hours of my life
charlie could do a boss fight that would take him 12 hours to beat and he would still say "that wasnt too bad i was expecting it to be a bit harder tbh"
I love how differently everyone plays this game, it does the metroidvania thing to absolute perfection in how non-linear it is and how open it feels at all times. I’ve played Hollow Knight to 112% four separate times and all 4 playthroughs felt completely unique from each other
@@jyutifloy The only thing in Blood and Wine that was hard was the final boss and even that took me like 7 attempts. I've yet to beat pantheon of hallownest
@@madyconn they are working on a sequel called silksong but it has been announced nearly 3 years ago and no release date as of now. Though I do think it's coming out in 2022
I love this game and i remember quite some time ago i saw Cr1tikal barely play this game for like 30 min and completely brush it off. He said “you play one 2D platformer and youve played them all”, and he closed the game and left it. Then one day im casually scrolling through youtube and find this video titled “Hollowknight is a masterpiece”, and believe me when i say that my heart soared watching this. I love this game and i love Cr1Tikal. So seeing him give this game a second chance and actually liking it made me so happy.
