I love this song and it's very deep. Even the video has meaning. His walk is a representation of the path of life, the people he encounters are the people and events that we encounter through our lives. The guy with the fridge on a dolly is like a big life altering event that was narrowly avoided. The people he bumped into are the little speed bumps that help shape our lives. The girl in the car is a bad relationship, the car is the large event that he was able to cross and move on from but she didn't move on as easily and followed representing how a love can effect your life long term even after it's ended. The lady he knocked down was like an encounter where he hurt someone else's life in some way and he was recognizing that but still life continues without looking back. The girl that checked him out was like a perfect fling that came and went and left only a fond memory. The car that actually made him pause was a major life event that held him in place for a while, maybe good maybe bad but significant enough to make his life take pause but in the end it too did pass and life continued as always. And the end when the other four followed with him is like the people in your life who are there for the long haul whoever they may be they stick with you till the end while still living their lives respectively.

Many people's instinct is to think that he is the one bumping into other people. But they are also doing the same with him. Either by expecting him to move out of their way, or because they are not paying attention where they're going or standing themselves. While, he is simply walking slowly in a straight line.
@TheMelancholyangel

Sums up life, his walk. Sometimes you bump into people, sometimes you slide by them, sometimes they slide by you, sometimes they bump into you. Sometimes they react, sometimes they couldn't care less

As a result, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were added to the songwriting credits, and all royalties from the song went to former Rolling Stones manager Allen Klein. In April 2019, Jagger and Richards ceded their rights to the song to the Verve's songwriter Richard Ashcroft."

The underlying melody to this song was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from from 'The Rolling Stones'. Unfortunately 'The Verve' didn't get permission to use that melody. So, Jagger and Richards got the majority of profits from this song. Jagger and Richards generally don't allow their music to be sampled by other artists. It's against their personal code. Older People may recognise this. When I approached and turned 60 I started to notice I was becoming invisible. In the street, people would try to walk right through me automatically assuming I would move out of the way. Couples, people with prams, young people just didn't seem to care or even notice I was there. So I started walking like this guy, with my shoulders braced to bounce anybody that tried to walk through me. It pissed a few people off that deserved it but I felt better. Shortly after that I began wearing a kilt and found that cleared a path with no problem. I live in Edinburgh, Scotland where it's windy and people were never sure if I was a 'traditional' kilt wearer and didn't want to find out the hard way. They needn't have worried. I always wore a kilt pin which stopped it from flying open, even in the wind.
