Holzfforma g288 Review After 1/2 Year Of Work & A couple of LOUSY Felling Techniques On Display

Beginning to see the trend with this saw, actually have enough time in enough situations to have an opinion.
ALSO A couple of lousy tree felling cuts, for what ever reason when I first started with this saw I couldn't BUY a good felling cut! First is a chain I hacked up with a file out in the woods, the rrakers were too aggressive ( to much bite ), you can SEE the thing grab and kick. I get spoiled with the c-85 where it's SO smooth cutting I can be a little less perfect with the "angle" of the bar in the cut without a snatch & kick back. SO when I go from a c83/85 "out of the box" to a field hand filed chain... I have to go back to a more "precise" technique.
SECOND tree, another "self inflicted" PITA as I made the bore & back cut too low relative to the face cut. Then had to wedge the tree up and over the shelf created.

Just don’t forget that the “noodles” are your secret weapons for your fire starters in the home as opposed to the other “means” commonly told to use by the naysayers. Trust me Walt, it works EXTREMELY WELL!

With the price of wood pellets at $308/ton I betcha you could turn those noodles into $$$ with a pellet press 😀

Keeps my father in law from pitching paper wads in the wood stove! Five gallon bucket of noodles lasts a pretty good long time also.

I'll be laying up this years firewood shortly. With my double 555's(one old Mac, and a Husky) as well as the recommended G372XT. Glad to see you out and about, doing the same.

I find this interesting. The 288 is my first experience with a kit saw. I have 2 here 1 that I built and one from a subscriber. My saw is an earlier kit and other then the oiler I've had no issues and as you know I put an old oem oiler on mine and it oils a 28" bar nicely now. Power wise I'd say it has more then my 181 but to be honest I haven't done a back to back with them, too busy cutting firewood this time of year. The second is a new kit, it's had some assembly related issues but the parts seem to be quality. The oiler works well on the second saw but not as good as the oem. The second saw has developed and air leak so I can't say wether it's going to be as good as the first one. Once firewood season is over I'll have to fix it and throw it in the fleet..

Most kit saws sealing them is ppls issue . I use the grey case sealer on everything and both sides the case middle gasket and mine is tight as a drum. Sealed up the carb blocks also and bolted the carb elbo down. It’s all in the assembly. Has nothing to do with the parts my oiler slings the oil very well!

Mine has no base gasket and I advanced the timing.026 on the woodruff key and I lightened the piston and pin 16 grams. It’s a beast cleaned the ports no timing change and I wanted the plating solid on edges. It’s a wicked saw has a wicked idle. Lots of compression the release doesn’t help much.

I bought 2 of these on Amazon based on your assessment and price point. As of 10.7.22 - $239. I have two g372 and the 288 is a far better saw for anyone that just wants to buy a saw and go to work. Thanks for the testing/r&d.

Which do you like better? 288 or 372?

Their bar oil lists 10/30 so they probably use old used oil mostly not the thick real environment safe oil we do. But I just got one 10/23 and it’s pouring oil so I believe they remedy that issue. Also I’ve heard the rods are now harder. I’m liking mine so far

My ms 660 is now 4 years old and running fine. I am going to put it in storage pretty soon. If I need it, I will just fill it up with gas and get it going. I am running Husqvarna XP in everything, now, at 50:1. It runs fine.

Ph amd one more thing, the carbs on both my saws tune perfectly, usually I throw these aftermarket carbs in the trash as I've rarely had any luck with them.

Same results here …. I built 7 044s over the past winter 🥶 and used an aftermarket carb (was around $25) as a getr goin carb. From my experience they held a tune but the saws ran noticeably better with Oem. I was getting walbro hd -17 to my door for $89 bucks per unit …. Now those same carbs are $111 from the same vendor (may be able to find cheaper 🤷‍♂️). Holy inflation Batman 😀

I was talking to my local guru on the Stihl ms 660 cylinder bolt under the muffler, they apparently can do that and the bolts are found under the muffler. He always uses thread locker on any 660 that he repairs and always checks the cylinder bolts , if he finds one loose they all come out and thread locker used. Information is always good weather it is good bad or otherwise. Cheers all.

I might have to try your method of making several noodle cuts and gleaning split wood instead of halving or quartering and then splitting. Looks like a time/back saver and Lord knows as I get older the pieces aren’t getting any lighter 😉

Thank you for the good review! Getting back in logging and don't happen to have an extra 1200 bucks laying around for a new husky, and the price is right on those. If I can get a half year or more on one of those, I'll be very happy

Go with the g395 :) Also go back into my video's and see what I had to check for and tweak, It turned into a pro level machine and you would get your year. I had more finicky issues with the g288 and it was OK but not as sorted and solid as the same amount of effort expended on the 395 yielded. That g395 turned out to be a money making machine for me.

Ordered a new kit saw, yesterday. Staying with my 2022 theme of “ smaller and lighter” I ordered the ms 250. Should be an easy build and it has been a few years since I owned a 250. I looked at the G395 and the H 288but I thought about the weight and they did not have a niche they would fit in my collection. The 250 did because I do not have a lot of 18 inch 45 cc saws.

I bought a 288 that didn't oil turned out to have an aftermarket oil pump in it so I sourced an oem one and learned that there are two different worm gears for those 288s so they might not have had the correct one for the aftermarket oil pump

I run an Xcut chain (sp33) on my 550xp and really like it. Also using them force bar on it. Need to try the xcut chain on my 572

I really hate that chain. It does chatter and the rakers are doubled making a gauge difficult

I’m liking the look of those 288’s more and more!!! I thought they would be close in power to the g395’s??? Maybe I’d be better off getting a backup 395??!?
@jefferyboring4410
@jefferyboring4410 7 месяцев назад
395 has quad transfers it’s a new better design so it revs much better so the 295 makes more power but heavier.

Pour little blue 288… getting ridden hard and put away wet because she’s not the prom Queen 395!!!! That’s just terrible!!! LMFFAO!!! I’ve been looking at those for awhile… I definitely don’t need any more saw’s… my 395 husky just got a new piston kit …so it’s good for another decade… and these couple of G660’s are what I really work to save out my other saw’s… with the 99cc Hyway popup piston kit it’ll pull the 48” 404 right with the 088 quite honestly!!! I make’s a big torque saw…just can’t start cutting to correct your timing numbers because the cylinder lining fakes off in big chunks!!!

I have a farmertech 62cc Chinese chainsaw that operates and cuts like a dream. Much relies on the operator and not the saw.

The dogs on these saw are not correctly in line. I ended up making my dogs for my G288 like other saw's. I did install a newer oiler a 28" laser bar and I made a 395xp full wrap fit. I have not done anything to the exhaust yet

I think u hit the mail on the head, everyone wants to compare them to the copy saw , but it’s really comparing a 300$ saw to a 1200$ saw , which is like comparing a ford focus to a Cadillac, the fords nice but it’s 1/4 of the price!!

Another great video, Walt! Could you tell me which brand of chaps those are that youre wearing? I need a new set. BTW little 51 that you recommend I buy a few years ago is still going strong. Thanks.

Husqvarna chap's modified by cutting them a bit to fit and adding a "tactical" clasp/ buckle for the belt.
@JesseWright68

@@afleetcommand Thanks, Walt. I've got some set of their "technical" chaps that I think are made for someone who is around 150 lbs. and I'm about 275 lbs. The upper legs are too tight and the full wrap lower legs make them the hottest garmet on the planet. I'll see if I can find some like you wear.
