The outbreak of brazen smash-and-grab robberies and shoplifting is showing no signs of stopping, but some stores are taking extreme measures to stop would-be thieves in their tracks, including Home Depot. Spokesperson Christina Cornell gave Inside Edition an exclusive look at the company's latest crime-fighting technology, including a shopping cart with wheels that lock if you don't pay and bluetooth-activated items.

Keeping a person in prison cost more than $1000. So let's say you sentence the shoplifter 1 year in prison for stealing 1000 dollar of merchandise. Now the tax payers (you) will pay $65,000 (ave cost per prisoner). So in other words that same shoplifter not just stole $1000 from the retail store but stolen $65,000 from you and me. You see a problem?

My hometown would only ever lock up electronics, most of the time still very accessible if under about $70. I move to the city, need a $20 charger only to find out I gotta ask an employee for help. Like dang, when you gonna have thieves result to stealing candy and locking the candy up (already a threat to Halloween candy givers).

As someone who works at home Depot, it's hard trying to stop shoplifting, you can't tackle or put your hands on them, otherwise, your fired, a friend of mine got fired for trying to stop a shoplifter from taking a bucket of tools, he ended up get a scar on his hand and had to go to the hospital and was fired from that, nothing we can do honestly Update: ok so before, loss prevention was allowed to do that back then and apprehend shoplifters, but now they can't, all they can do is kick them out of the store and that's it, no physical contact with the shoplifter unless they put on your hands first, but you can't hit them back or your fired

My coworker had someone steal an Amazon package off his porch. He posted the Ring footage and someone identified the woman pretty quickly. She was out on bond for being caught stealing multiple times from Home Depot when she stole his package along with a bunch of other people's mail. Then before her trial she was caught on camera stealing from Home Depot again. She wound up getting only a couple months in jail. It wasn't her first time being caught either, she just wound up with probation or suspended sentences. Thieves know they can walk in a store grab whatever they want, walk out and no one will stop them. And even if they get identified they'll do little to no time for it.
